Captain George W Bradford, 3rd Division, 1st Brigade, 42nd Regiment Maryland Militia, War of 1812
I wish to trace the Maryland Militia military history of the 42nd and 49th Regiments in order to build a service record of William HUNTER, Private, enlisted 27 Aug 1814 for a five year term.
He later enlisted, in Baltimore MD, 26 Sept 1820, as a Private with James Ripley, First Lieutenant, 4TH ARTILLERY, as a private for a five year term in the United States Army and was subsequently attached to Capt. Chester Roots', Company G, 3rd Battalion, Artillery, Southern Division. Subsequently served at Fort Barancas, Fort Monroe and Fort Delaware with the 4th Artillery.
Officers of the Third Division, 1st Brigade, 42nd and 49th Regiment: - Major General Samuel Smith. Sept/1814, commanded the Third Division that defended Baltimore - Brig. General Thomas M. Forman….Commanded the 1st Brigade, (Harford & Cecil County) containing the 30th, 40th, 42nd, 49th Regiments of Infantry 9/1814 - Capt. George W Bradford, 3rd Division, 1st Brigade, 42nd Regiment Maryland Militia (Aug 19, 1809); then promoted to Sgt Major (Sept 1814) - Lt. Colonel Thomas W Veazey, 49th Regiment Maryland Militia (17 June 1810)
Questions:
- Were Captains in the Maryland Militia in command of a designated Company, ie A, B, C & etc.? - Did the 42nd and the 49th Regiments continue in active service after Sept 1814?
Any information would be very appreciated.
