George Washington Smith was born in 1785 and served in the War of 1812. He received land in Hancock co Ga for his service. He was drafted when he was in Robertson co TN in 1814. Would anyone know where I could find his military records and location of the land he received for his military service? Thanks, Ross

"The Battle of Stoney Creek"

Finally have a book written on,The Battle of Stoney Creek.
"Strange Fatality, The Battle of Stoney Creek, 1813" by James E Elliott. The Web site is listed below
"Difficult to execute and risky in the extreme, night attacks were the tactic of last resort, reserved for only the most desperate of situations. The over matched British army, short of men and ammunition, faced certain defeat in a conventional, daylight encounter. Brought to bay by a larger force, there was only one possible out – turn and face the strange – strike the pursuers in the middle of the night.

In this ground-breaking study of a battle in which both sides were essentially blind, James Elliott sheds light, not only on a violent donnybrook in the dark, but also on the bizarre train of events that occasioned it, including:

The massive textbook operation that quickly overwhelmed Fort George, but allowed the British army to escape.
The failed British assault at the eastern end of Lake Ontario that hobbled American plans to confront the British army on the Niagara.
The unlikely chain of circumstance that led not one, but two American generals to surrender their swords.
The curious fate of the British brigadier who lost his hat, his horse and his command during the battle.
The powerful fear of native warriors that conjured “all the Indians in Canada” on the battlefi eld at Stoney Creek.
The repeated chance appearances by the Royal Navy squadron on Lake Ontario that unnerved the American high command.
The fable of the militiaman who, a full 12 years after his death in 1877, was accorded laurels as the “hero” of Stoney Creek.
The second Battle of Stoney Creek that played out over 20 years with the combatants split on gender lines.

With 10 original maps, over 100 illustrations, portraits and photographs, many never seen before, as well as appendices on battlefield archaeology and the little-known “monument war.”

Published by Robin Brass Studio
www.strangefatality.com
Ist Georgia Militia command of Brigadier Gen. John Floyd. Under his command was Harris Regiment. Harris Regiment was engaged on Jan. 27, 1814 at Fort Definance on Calibee Creek Mississippi Territory. Present day location is 25 miles east of Montgomery Alabama.
At this battle my 4th Great Grandpa , James P. Snow was killed.
I am trying to locate a possible burial site of this soldier.

Fort Definance was only a brush and log's piled up for some protection against the Redstick Warriors. Not a regular Fort.
Any information would be most appreciated.

I'm trying to find any resources that might lead to me to find a (Jas) Henry Scott, who could have served during the War of 1812.

He was born possibly in Georgia in 1792 and appeared on the Franklin County, Alabama census for 1820. Since the Franklin County, AL Courthouse records were destroyed for this time period, I'm hoping a military record might shed some light on this individual.

Thanks.

Chuck Parker
Tejas1829@aol.com

Patrick, Thank you for your reply. I am trying to locate militia records for my ancestor Coatsworth Pinkney Black, and Garvin Black who resided in Jackson Co, GA sometime between 1812-1819. Jackson Co was as the edge of the organized counties at that time. I will check as you suggested in neighboring SC. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Question do you know if whites ever got married during this period in official "Cherokee or Creek" nations? Thanks

Thanks for the info! I would love to have the website that lists where the regiments were formed. I have gotten copies of Nahor's military record so I have a few tidbits of info from that. He, of course, never filed for a pension nor did he have a widow that filed for one. I have good info about where Nahor was from 1820 on, but not much except for the military service before that and no clue as to who his parents actually were.

Look foward to hearing from you about the website!
Scott,
What is it you are looking for. If it is a missing Georgia 1812 ancestor, he may not be recorded in a Georgia Militia. 3/4th of Georgia was Indian Territory at the outbreak of the War. There are over 15,000 recorded Georgia Militia volunteers recorded in the NARA, but a great number not recorded in the Georgia militia joined up with other State militias during the Red Stick wars.
If it is writting a Militia History. there are ways to accomplish the task.
Patrick

Patrick, have you had much luck with the county militia records for this period. My understanding is that in Georgia when a male reached the age of 15 he was required to register for the county militia. Is there a central location for these records at the state level perhaps? Or is it a county by county search. And have you had much luck in finding these records if they exist. Appreciate your help, Scott

How much did the War of 1812 contribute to the Creek Indian Wars? Folks will surely be talking about it when Old Knoxville Days celebrates Benjamin Hawkins and the Creek Legacy Nov. 12 and 13, 2005, in Crawford County, GA. This living history festival will feature as special guests members of the Lower Muscogee Creek Tribe from Whigham, GA, who will be camped in Knoxville to demonstrate tribal skills of the early 1800s. The festival will also feature an old-fashioned Sacred Harp Singing, handcraft vendors, exhibits, hands-on children's activities, music, mule wagon rides, and drama. We have not been able to find War of 1812 re-enactors to participate. If you know someone who'd like to come, please let us know. And PLEASE COME.
For information, see www.rootsweb.com/~gacchs or call the Chamber of Commerce at 478-836-3825.
Kathy,
For whatever reason they are lost, but there are census substitutes, such as tax lists. the land lottery, for 1803, 1806, 1819.. In 1790 there were only eleven counties, with about 70% of the state being Indian land. Some of these counties had areas that were enumerated in the Counties of bordering states. You could throw in the 1812-1815 war of 1812 as another resource.
Patrick

Pat,
I presume you have his pension file and land warrant data. I cant tell you the source of a Georgia soldiers 1812 list, but you can achieve the same through the 1812 soldier CD' s available.

Was there ever a list found for Georgia soldiers? My ggggrandfather, Samuel Warden was in Adam G. Saffold's Company under Lt. Colonel Jone's Battallion Detachment Georgia Militia. He was from Franklin County, GA.

I was looking into finding a list of soldiers of the War of 1812 when I came across your posting of Georgia Volunteers. I thought it was odd that the person I am researching is Samuel Warden the Younger as he is called. He fought in the war in Adam G. Saffold's Company (December 1814 to May 1815) under Lt. Col Jones Battallion Detachment Georgia Militia. Samule was born april 1793 in Franklin County, GA. His father and Grandfather fought in the Revolutinary War and had come to the United States from Northern Ireland in 1771.
