While I didn't know your father, I looked his name up in the listing we have on the VHPA (Vietnam Helicopter Pilots Assoc.) website (
www.vhpa.org) and found some information that might be useful to you. He went through the Army flight school with class number 67-3 which means he would have gone through flight school with the class that started probably in the 3rd week of July, 1967. Apparently he served as a warrant officer although he may have later become a commissioned officer. It also shows that he had at least one tour of duty with the 196th ASHC. ASHC means that was an Assault Support Helicopter Company which means he probably, at least on that tour, flew the CH-47 Chinook helicopter which is a medium sized cargo helicopter. If he was, as you say an Air Force Evac pilot, then he must have transferred from the Army to the Air Force at some point during his service.
You might try sending an email to David Adams at
mohawkdriver@gmail.com asking him to put a blurb in the next issue of The VHPA Aviator, our bi-monthly magazine, asking people who flew with or knew your Uncle Roy to contact you. Alternatively, you could send a similar message to the people at
hq@vhpa.org since, by the time you get this, David might no longer be the editor.
Hope this helps.
