Ancestry has a SSA database that has a James Fulton Dudley with b Sept 9, 1923 in Charlottevile VA. Father Hunter S and mother Lilia. August 1940 name listed as James Fulton Dudley. October 1997 name listed as James F Dudley. He died Sept. 24, 1997.

He is in the SSDI as James F Dudley same dob, dod and last address is 96950 Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands USA. SSN issued in Virginia.

Unless you can match other identifying information or personal knowledge, besides just a name James F Dudley you can not be sure the one b. 1923 and the one getting the Medal from the South Vietnam are one in the same.

There is a James F. Dudley that was enlisted in US Navy Dec 15, 1942 and was a RM rate (Radio man) with service number 659 71 79 reported aboard the USS Logan (APN-196) Oct 1944 in Navy Muser Rolls. Last Quarter Entry for the ship was Oct 1945 and he was still listed. He enlisted in Richmond VA.

VA BIRLS Death index has James Dudley Navy enlistment Dec 21, 1942 discharged Feb 14, 1946 with same dob & dod as SSDI information.

Now there is a Navy Cruise Book Database with a picture of a JF Dudley (Navy rate RMC) as being a crew member of the USS Annapolis (AGMR-1) in 1964.

To clarify the award, the III Corps was a South Vietnamese Military Unit that the U.S. Military was engaged in Joint Military Operations with.... thus the name "Joint Service Commendation".
