My grandfather, Lee Farek is on this navy transfer list. What do the letters and numbers mean next to his name?

CSSA is his naval designation which is Commissary Seaman Apprentice and the numbers are his naval identification number. Prior to the mid 1960's all military members were assigned ID numbers by their respective services.

I was told he might have served as a cook in the navy, so the word commissary would coincide with that? Thank you so much for the information!

You are correct. In the Navy, the Commissary branch includes the cooks, butchers, bakers and others who prepare the food and operate the galley (dining room).
