What is the easiest way to find naval records? enlistment dates? etc

Thanks for the info, and I have looked at that before.

My problem is that I don't know service record numbers etc. I was hoping to find the Navy equivalent of the Army Enlistment cards.

There really isn't any equivalent to the Army enlistment records. You could try the Ship muster rolls from 1938-1949 if they served during WW 2. If the person is deceased, have you tried the cemetery or local town clerks office where they lived to see if either has a copy of their discharge paperwork? You could try the VA also if they were ever a patient in their system. Do you have any information on dates served, location, ships assigned, etc? I didn't have a service number and NARA was able to locate my fathers entire WW 2 record with very little difficulty.
