In November 1969 a group of Korean era Marines had a reunion in Washington, DC at the YMCA. They called themselves the Potomac 11. My father Harold was one of the members.

My question is if anyone else has information on this group.

Found Army Dog Tags - J C Golden or Colden

Hello,

I am trying to locate the owner of a pair of old dog tags. I found a set of dog tags a few years ago in south Georgia at a second hand shop. I bought them in hopes of reuniting them with the original owner or family. The tags read:

Golden (or possibly Colden)

J C B Pos

Number ending with 7423. (Possibly the social security number.)

USMC C

7th Day Advent

If you know the owner or family, please let me know. I will gladly mail the dog tags back to the rightful owners at no cost. I know these sort of things have significant sentimental value.

Thanks

On the muster rolls, at the top of the page, do any of them have the name of a ship? If he was mustered on a ship, it is more than likely he was a U.S. Marine. If the muster says "marine barracks" at a Navy base, that's also a clue.

Semper Fidelis.

Kevin

Are you sure it is your father or just someone with the same name? Do you have your fathers discharge papers or any other documents? That would give you a service number and a branch of service to compare to that on the rosters. If your father is deceased, you can check with the local clerks office or the cemetery where he was buried to see if they have a copy of his discharge papers on file. His obituary should also mention which branch of the service he was in.

Marine Corps or Army?

How do I find out whether my father was in the army or marine corp? I always thought it was the army, but I found 3 rolls or rosters with him and his best friend listed and they say marine corp. He joined at the Alabama Dry Docks in Mobile, Al. when there was not a war going on and was stationed in Baltimore, Maryland. I was born during that time. I am confused now because I always believed without question that he was in the army. Now I'm not sure. Can anyone help me understand what I am looking at when I look at the rosters. Should I take them at face value? Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Terri

Greetings from Tennessee. Looking to contact with fellow Marines who served with my father, Sgt. John Condon (New Jersey) or their family members. My father was stationed in several locations (Cuba and Dublin, being 2 that I know of). He was an avid photographer and I have several of the photos he took. He spoke very little about his time in as a Marine, therefore it would be nice to hear some old stories, since he is now deceased. Merry Christmas and thanks for your service. The attached photo has several names from 122

Despite YEARS of searching, we still have found nothing. Its as if my husbands real father never existed.

LARRY GEORGE, w/m, was in the Marines and stationed near Albany, GA in 1957-1958. He was 24 in 1958 and was born in New Orleans. Hoping someone might have some info on Marines stationed in south Georgia in the late 1950's? Possibly with the Marine Corps Materiel Command/MCSC, Albany, GA?

Thanks

You can enter the photopgraph at Yellow Foot Prints.com which compiles Marine Corps Recruit photographs from all years: (http://goo.gl/UKhdv). Since the Korean War was still on in 1952 such photo might be a good source for those that were deployed to Korea from that time period.

Kathryn "Kay" Wiggins Brand

MCALLEN, TX: Kathryn "Kay" Wiggins Brand passed away peacefully on April 22, 2012 after a lengthy illness since January.
Kay was born in Coshocton, Ohio on August 7, 1923.
She was the second of six children born to Marguerite and Arthur Wiggins. Her father was a railroad engineer until the Great Depression when he became a share cropper. Farming during that era included planting with a mule and harvesting with your hands. Her formative years forged the bonds of a closely knit family which endured through their lifetimes.

Shortly after the bombing of Pearl Harbor, three of Kay's brothers joined the Armed Forces. She overcame her father's objections and joined the Women Marines in 1943.
While working in transportation services refueling tanks, she met Marine Master Sergeant, Othal E. Brand. He was a southern Georgia boy and on R & R from Guadalcanal in the Solomon Islands. Her eyes would twinkle when recalling how they met. They rented a home, bought a piano and a set of encyclopedias. Othal bought acreage to build a home when Harvey Drive was the northern boundary for the city limits of McAllen,Texas.
Late in life Kay was honored as a recipient of the American Heart Award and included for special recognition at the McAllen War Memorial. The family memorial there aptly reads "Service in War and Peace"

Kay was much involved in the community with the Boys and Girls clubs. Her community activities included working with Girl Scouts. She was a Brownie troop leader in Atlanta and until her death was a staunch supporter of WINGS (Women in Girl Scouts). Being actively involved with her son's Boy Scout troop had been another joy for her.
She served tirelessly for many years on the McAllen Public Library Board.

Kay Brand has four children: Marjorie Lynn Ferrell, Karyn Sue Purvis, O. E. Brand Jr and Cynthia Lee Brand. 10 grandchildren, 21 great grandchildren She is also survived by her brother, Don Wiggins, his wife Patricia and her sister, Clara Herrick, her sisters-in-law Elnora Wiggins, Carolyn Jackson and numerous much loved nieces and nephews.
WILLARD, OH: Amos Drue Thompson was born December 26th, 1923 in Garrett, Indiana, the eldest son of Elder Hubert W. and Novella S. Thompson.

Amos moved to Willard, Ohio when he was two years old and attended Willard Public Schools.

In 1943, he married Alice Hammock and together they had one son, Allen.
In June of 1943 Amos enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and received his basic training at Montford Point, Camp LeJeune, NC.
He was part of the last segregated Marines trained at Montford Point.
Thompson's wife and son both died in 1944 while he was overseas. Amos was honorably discharged from the Marines in November of 1945.

This past February, he was featured in the Cleveland Plain Dealer and the Willard Times for his service as a Montford Point Marine, and at the time he was one of 300 Marines still living of the 20,000 original Montford Point Marines. In November of 2011, President Obama signed legislation to award a Congressional Gold Medal to the first blacks who enlisted in the U.S. Marines in the 1940's. The action awards the medal to the Montford Point Marines "in recognition of their personal sacrifice and service to their country". The U.S. House passed the bill, sponsored by Rep. Corrine Brown, Florida Democrat, in October 2011 by a vote of 422-0. The Senate approved it by unanimous consent earlier in the month.
Thompson's wife will receive the medal on his behalf in a special ceremony slated to take place sometime this year.

He returned to Willard, Ohio in 1945 and began working for the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad and retired in 1985 after 40+ years of employment.

On January 6th, 1947, Amos married Maxine Smith. To that union was born seven children: Sheila J. Thompson (deceased), Cheryl L. Thompson-Taylor (Donal), Aaliyah J. Karim (deceased), Denise L. VanLeer (David), Adrian D. Thompson, Esq. (Tracy), Valerie S. Saunders (Darin) and Christopher A. Thompson (Tricia).

He was preceded in death by his parents Hubert W. and Novella S. Thompson; first wife, Alice Thompson; children, Allen Thompson, Sheila J. Thompson and Aaliyah J. Karim; and great-grandson, Tristan G. Thompson; sisters, Eula Mae Hammock, Martha Lee Scott and Elizabeth Ford; and brother, William C. Thompson.

Amos was an avid gardener and loved to fish. He also loved music and was the director of a gospel quartet. In addition, he also helped to raise numerous nieces and nephews.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maxine Thompson; five children; 22 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; his youngest sister, Dorothy Peat of New York; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 31st, 2012 at 11 am, at the Secor Funeral Home - 202 West Maple Street, Willard, Ohio 44890.
Viewing hours will be on Friday, March 30th, 2012 from 2 - 4 pm and from 6-8 pm (the family will be present during this time).
Burial will follow at the Greenwood Cemetery in Willard, Ohio with military funeral rites.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a contribution to the Amos D.

Hi, don't know if you have resolved this since you posted it, but I have been working through my father's USMC service record for the past couple of years and am now pretty good at figuring these things out.

Reconstructing from your grandfather's statement: he was in the conflict on Saipan in the 18th regiment. This would be the 1st battalion, 18th regiment of the 2nd Marine Division, which is listed as an engineer battalion. (this battalion was previously the 2nd battalion, but was redesignated as the 1st right before Saipan) I am unable to locate the name/number of your grandfather's communications unit, but with some searching you may be able to find it.

The Colonel Salazar of whom he spoke can be found in Wikipedia's article on Hispanics in the Marine Corp.
"When the Marines landed in Saipan in 1944, among the commanders was Lieutenant Colonel Chester J. Salazar. Salazar was the Commanding Officer of the 2d Battalion, 18th Marines. Salazar had in 1943 served as commanding officer of the same unit in the Gilbert Islands which fought in the Battle of Tarawa."
source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hispanics_in_the_United_States_...

Hope this helps,
Semper Fi
Chris Knudsen

I'm completing the Standard Form 180 for a friend's next-of-kin request (the eVet site is beyond his comfort level, so I'm filling it out and giving it to him for signature and mailing). I'm having a bit of trouble in completing the service section, though; the man was a veteran of two wars, World War II (Pacific) and Korea. The first document is a Letter of Separation, and the second is a DD-214. The veteran was a Marine pilot, but I can't figure out what periods of time were active vs. reserve, and enlisted vs. officer.

I posted the Letter of Separation, the DD-214 and the section I need to complete on my Flickr page at: http://flic.kr/s/aHsjwZHZhc and my friend wants to secure all documents in the OMPF, so I want to provide as much information as possible.

Also, my friend has his father's pilot log from his time flying in Ulithi and Yap (The Caroline Islands), including the tail numbers and other details - would additional details be available on individual flights? I know he was one of the pilots who bombed Yap, but I didn't know if battle details would be in the OMPF.

My only experience in completing these form was for a simple enlistment period, so any assistance you can provide will be SO appreciated - thanks for reading!

I recently found out that my great, great grandfather was a US Marine. I would really like to find any military records for him. I know his name,John U. Reding, Country (Germany) and date of birth, 30 July 1832, and his date of death, 27 April 1917. He is listed in the 1890 Veterans schedule.

Where can I find military records for him? What information do I need besides what I have listed here?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sam. I think your father was wrong in his father fighting with the marines at Iwo Jima. First, being born in 1927, 16 Jul 1927 in fact, he would have been too young. I also don't think he was in the Marines, but rather the army. I found an enlistment record where Irwin Friedman, birth 1n 1927, enlisted in the army in the Bronx as a private on 12 Apr 1945. Was his wife named Edith? If so I also found a record where they returned to the US, NYC, from Frankfort, Germany on a military charter flight on Pan Am on 27 Nov 1953. At that time he was a lst Lt. Don

The site has photos, maps, uniforms, interesting vignettes, and much, much more. This site provides you with a glimpse into the everyday life of a “China Marine”.
Richard Goodwin - can't seem to find information about him

Good morning all,

I was contacted recently from a distant cousin, who had information about a line of the family that I was missing. One of the individuals was a Marine in WWII. The story that she relayed to me is that her uncle was known as the most decorated serviceman from New England during WWII. I'd like to find out the story behind this. Can anyone assist? I've been searching high & low and I can't find a thing on him, including obituaries, military records, etc.

Name: Richard W. Goodwin.
Below is a link to his Find-a-grave memorial, which has a photo of his military gravestone.
http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GSln=go...;

I'd like to know what medals & decorations Richard had. According to one of the stories that were told... he travelled around to the schools to show his helmet that had a bullet go in, circle around and come out without killing him.

Thanks!
Peter
