I'm looking for a list of US Marines who were on Tutuila between 1939-1943. Been trying other sources for assistance with no success. Any suggestion?

From 1939-1941 you would have had the "Marine Guard Detachment-Tutuila Island" as the major Marine unit on the island. They were the 7th Defense Battalion, Fleet Marine Force at Camp Samuel Nicholas. There was also the 1st Samoan Battalion- Marine Corps Reserve.

Starting in 1942 there was the additional 2nd Defense Battalion and the various battalions of the 8th and 10th Marines/ 2nd Marine Brigade (Reinforced). There were literally thousands of Marines on the island, both stationed there and temporary assignments. Unless you have a name you would have to sift through the USMC muster rolls for American Samoa- Tutuila Island.

Thanks. I searched on the 7th Defense Battalion and only found this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/U.S._7th_Marine_Regiment

I need to look into some history of when did the marines first arrive on Tutuila, the additional detachments if any, prior to 1943. I'm looking for a list. Thanks again.

As ycano77 stated, you will need to look at Muster Lists for the Marines. Ancestry has U.S Marines Corps Muster Rolls 1798-1858. I did a search of no names then "station" Tutuila. There were 15,014 results.

Th first 27 have no last names, just a first and a muster on date of Oct 1906, looking at the first "Albert" the page is very poorly scanned near impossible to read.
The 28th entry is Muster date April 1942 again the next 25 or so still have no last names or just question marks or blank. The it starts Alphabetical with surnames and the muster in dates are varied, mostly 1942/43 I see doing a quick scan result page 20 (951-1000) one name has a muster in date of 1925.

Contact the American Samoa Archives or Tutuila's Archives.

Doing a search with "station" American Samoa, there are 7,206 results with the first page of muster in dates as April 1942. This time all have first and surnames.
