I have an ancestor,George Washington Cook, that was supposedly "killed in 'the war' near Baton Rouge 30 Mar 1857".
I have Googled everything I can think of to find a military action anywhere near that time frame. Everything jumps from the War of 1812 to the Civil War.

Does anyone know what war, battle he might have been in ?

Sharon

Maurice Wood

If anyone could tell me what branch of the military this person was in I would greatly appreciate it. And if you know where I could find military records for him. His name is Maurice Wood, and he was born about 1912-1915. He lived in Louisiana all his life I believe, and Jefferson Davis Parish at one point in his life when he was about 15. In his later years he lived in Carencro, Louisiana. He spoke French and was a translator for the U.S. Military, possibly during World War II as this picture looks like it was taken when he was in his 20s, possibly early 30s. I’m also looking for any information on his family. I believe is mother may have been of French/Indian descent, but not sure about his father. He passed away in 2000. Thank you!

Capt Glenn's Co, 14th Regiment, United States Infantry abt 1847

Need some information concerning this military unit. I found a Military Warrant awarding land to "Christian Papste" formerly a private in Captain Glenn's Company, fourteenth Regiment United States Infantry. The warrant states that Congress approved 11 Feb 1847 an act "to raise for a limited time an additional military force, and for other purposes."

Does anyone know what was the purpose of this unit? Who was the enemy in 1847? How would I go about finding the soldiers in this unit?

Christian Pabst, a Prussian immigrant, was 23 in the 1850 Carroll Parish census.

The land (now in Richland Parish) is described as the NW 1/4 of Section 36, Twp 18 N, Range 9E, roughly 160A. Christian and his wife Mary E. sold this land and an adjoining parcel to James J. Slade in 1860.(Carroll Parish Deed Book K:421) I had not known how he acquired this property until finding the military warrant on the Bureau of Land Management General Land Office records.
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/

I would like to know the location and staff, if possible for "The Smallpox Hospital operated by Union surgeons between 1864-1866 in New Orleans. Or where I could locate this information. The staff would have also tended the sick in the stockade on Ship Island, east of New Orleans and just south of Mississippi.

I believe the duty was of the New York 72nd, 2nd division, 2nd Brigade, 3rd Army Corps surgeon, but it seems that several of those regiments were regrouped, the 72nd, 73rd 74th, etc. So it is difficult to be specific.

Thank you

Ruth Schmidt lived in New Orleans sometime between Jan and Nov 1946, maybe in Navy military housing. Her husband Walter Schmidt was in the U.S.Naval Airforce. Ruth was 21 years old from Kansas City, Missouri and had a girl child about one year old. Ruth had a brief affair with a man named LaBelle, Laubel, Lobelle maybe John or James. Family history has him living in New Orleans but he could have been stationed there in the military. He visted Ruth in California in the 50's or 60's for a brief time. Ruth returned to Missouri before Dec 1946. She had a son in Dec 1946. She named him John James Schmidt. Ruth's husband divorced her in 1947. My line comes from John James and I would like to find John's biological father's history. I'm working on my family genealogy and it's incomplete without John James biological father. Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks for your time and consideration. Jen

I have posted a lengthy obituary of COL Smith on the Smith family message board which details his military career and service as a colonel in the CSA during the War between the States.
He was an organizer of the 24th Louisiana Volunteers, known as the Crescent Regiment and participated in the battle of Shiloh. He later served in the artillery and was in the battle of Port Hudson, where he was taken prisoner. After being exchanged a year later, he served in Richmond until the end of the war.

For information on a WW1 serviceman, check the state Veterans Administration. They should have him on file and a record of the battles he was in; muster in date, out, etc. This worked for myself in Iowa. My wife's Grandfather was also in the 42nd Rainbow Division. The Headqurters Troop was a Louisiana outfit but his name is not listed in the original complement. He was probably added in mid-1918 when the 42nd started taking the casualties, almost 14,000 killed and wounded. Chard from Iowa

It is my understanding that the 2nd Louisiana Clavary was comprised of partisan units. Because it was not a regular military unit in the normal sense, the references I've found usually don't acknowledge the unit. My great grandfather was in Company D and during my research I discovered that his unit fought from Natchitoches Louisiana south toward Lafayette and along the Texas border. The Louisiana State Archives might be of some help to you in that they maintain pension and other records regarding Louisiana's confederate veterans.

Mary,
I am sorry to say that after searching several sites I couldnot find anything for you. I know I got my dads records from WWII when I wrote to my senators office. Include all the information you have on your grandfather and also indicate your name, relationship and where to send the information to you.

Good luck researching.

Sandy
