I have an ancestor,George Washington Cook, that was supposedly "killed in 'the war' near Baton Rouge 30 Mar 1857".
I have Googled everything I can think of to find a military action anywhere near that time frame. Everything jumps from the War of 1812 to the Civil War.

Does anyone know what war, battle he might have been in ?

Not sure if this will be of much help, only the slave uprising comes to mind, and bank failures.
Also depends on your actual proof that he did die....
Good luck in your search
