Am working on a webpage for the regiment. Still have a long way to go but have a pretty good roster of names that I will be finishing off in the next week or so. Also have a picture of my gggrandfather, John H. Harris in his uniform taken during the war. He was a Pvt. in Co. F.

Will share information and picture if you still have an interest.

Hi Mr. McAlpin,
I am attaching a pic of the flag of Co. B 17th LA.
The flag was smauggled out of Vicksburg by Lt L J Nash. He sewed it into his
jacket.

Each side is different. You see the side with "Sabine Rebels" in the blue field.
The other side has 11 stars in the blue field in a scattered pattern. It is approx 3' x 4'.

I would appreciate any information you have on company B.

Thanks
John Russell

Hi Mike,
I own the flag and have direct provenance from L J Nash bringing it home. The family owned it
until 1982 when it was sold to a good friend of mine.

Where did your grandfather live during the war?

I will photograph and send to you.

My GGgrandfather Mark McAlpin was from Anacoco, just outside of modern Leesville. They bought "the Old Meade Plantation" in 1840. His wife was Elisabeth Smart, daughter of the lady who presented the flag to the Company in October 1861.

There was a picture of the flag draped over LJ's coffin in 1918. He left it to his niece (his sister Laura McNeely's daughter)

When last I knew of the flag, it was in the possession of J D Richards, a Deputy Sheriff from Harris County,TX. he was the son in law of the McNeely girl. It had been in a chest in the old family home for years, and when the niece died, JD packed her possessions up. that was maybe 1995 or so. I spoke with the McNeely family in maybe 2002.

There is a picture of it in a newspaper when it was draped over Nash's coffin in 1918. Do you have the newspaper article when it was presented?
