Surnames: Ziegler, Alverson, Alderdice
Here's another name of an Indian scout serving in the Indian wars in Kansas around 1865 to 1870: Eli Ziegler, who served with colonel Forsyth during the Battle of Beecher's Island in E. Colorado in 1868. Several Cheyenne and Sioux trapped them( several officers and around 50 scouts) on a small Island in a dry riverbed. They were under siege for 9 days and lost about half of their unit, but were finally rescued. Lived on horsemeat for most of the ordeal. Eli was the youngest scout, only 16 at that time. He was my grand uncle, being married to my great grandmother, Mary Ziegler Alverson. He was also the brother of Susanna Alderdice, who had been captured a year later in central Kansas near Salina, and finally lost her life in the Battle of Summit Springs, in Logan County, Colorado. She was killed by Tall Bull, chief of the Cheyenne Dog soldiers.A Mrs. Weichel survived, even though shot.Interestingly another scout at Beecher's Island was Tom Alderdice, brother in law of Eli and married to Susanna Ziegler Daily Alderdice.Susanna was killed just as the 5th cavalvary charged into the Indian camp in a surprise attack.

Surnames: Ziegler, Alderdice, Alverson, Bathurst
Hello. Thought I'd better follow up with a couple of corrections to my msg of 1/18/2004.Was in sort of a hurry when I wrote it and didn't check my copy very well. The fifty some officers and scouts trapped on Beecher's Island in 1868 were surrounded by several hundred Cheyenne and Sioux, not "several." Had it only been several there would not have been too much of a problem. And, Eli Ziegler was my great granduncle and was not married to anyone at that time. Mary Ziegler Alverson( my great grandmother and Susanna Ziegler Daily Alderdice's and Eli Ziegler's sister,) was married to John Alverson, who also was a noted Indian fighter back in the Saline and Solomon River area of Kansas.Eli Ziegler and the Alverson's eventually made it to Oregon, on one of the last Oregon Trail wagon trains, led by Ezra Meeker. Eli settled in Salem Oregon, married, and raised 7 daughters, and had a long productive life.Tome Alderdice(one of the Beeecher Island scouts) was pretty traumatized, having lost 2 children and one stepson in the raid that captured his wife, Susanna. He moved out of the area, into Colorado I believe, remarried and had several children. He also lived a long and productive life.John Alverson lived to 94and died in Tacoma,Wa in 1931. Have probably given you way too much info, but I've alway been fascinated with how resilient we are, and how we can come back from adversity you'd think would destroy a person. Are you researching for a book or just a personal interest ? Oh, and before I forget, my paternal grandfather, John Bathurst, also served as a cavalry scout in the late 1800's in South Dakota. As hostilities wore down, and he could deal with the Sioux on terms other than the enemy, he always said the Sioux were among the finest people on earth. He was fluent in Sioux and eventually had many friends among their people. I'll stop finally. Good luck in your Scout resarch. Gets sort of addictive does'nt it. Write anytime. Always good to be able to share notes... Gary Bathurst.

Gray my interest is personal I'm not into Family Genealogy per say but in the Historical part. I look for Surnames that I like then make a list of them. These lists help people get a little lead sometimes a big lead. These lists also let people know when and what they were doing in their live. I work off RootsWeb I'm what you would call a self helper. I have about 900 post, there most of my lists is Military but not all. Some time when you got time put in my last name and you will find all my post there you may find something of interest to you.If you have more info please add to this post there is a lot people that could use a lead. Oh before I go I did put some of your names through my index's, but sorry to say no luck, I also put your last name in also no luck.
Dennis.
