Where to find the regiment?

My g-uncle re-enlisted in the army after the civil war. He recieved a civil war penison. There was no mention of his later service in his penison records. I know that he was at
Fort Bridger in 1870, but have no idea of regiment he served with. I cannot find him in the 1880 census, but I know he was discharged arount 1888. Unfortunatley, his name
was John A Smith.

In 1870 the companies posted at Ft Bridger were: 'D' 2nd Cavalry and E, H, & K 7th Infantry. At mid year they were replaced by F & G 13th Infantry. Look at U.S. Returns from Regular Army Infantry Regiments for the 13th Infantry. The 7th Infantry for that period are not on-line yet (roll 82 of the microfilm series). I don't know the status of the 2nd Cavalry returns.
