Hi

I'm researching my husband's great grandfather Johannes (John) HESSE from Birkenbringhausen, Germany - migrated to Australia 1861.

Family still in Germany have given me a copy of a photo taken by E. Thibodeau, No 28 Nicollet Island, Minneapolis. They thought this was John in an Australian military uniform - which it isn't - nothing so splendid here. Thibodeau was a photographer in Minnesota from 1880s to 1919. I think this is quite early.

I believe the gentleman in the photo is another brother - probably Carl/Charles HESSE (pencilled name on reverse is Chas Hesse).

Can anyone identify the uniform he is wearing.

Regards

Julie
Canberra, Australia

The US Archives in Washington DC has the paper records for Regular Army officers serving in the years from 1789 through 1917. see http://www.archives.gov/publications/prologue/2002/fall/mili...

For an officer's military service after 1863, consult the Commission Branch (CB) and Appointment, Commission and Personal Branch (ACP) records, both found in RG 94, entry 297, Letters Received, 1863–1894. There is a card index arranged by name of officer for each of these files.

Use google to locate Heitman's Historical Register and Dictionary of the United States Army (1903) vol 1 page 313 lists

Charles Herschell Cochran, Ohio, Cadet MA July 1878 (38) 2 lt 7 inf 13 Jun 1883; 1 lt 20 Feb 1891, died 29 Sep 1892

usgenweb says colorado started death certs in 1907
Info from the application: Army Private Richard J. Schuster was born Nov. 21, 1889 and died Jan. 20. 1955. He enlisted in the Army July 30, 1918, and was discharged honorably Dec. 12, 1918. His unit of assignment was Company M, 2nd Battalion, CWS.
He is listed as being of the Christian faith, with a flat granite marker for a headstone. Schuster's remains rest in the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hanover Heights, N.J.

Having spent nearly six months in the military at the end of WWI, there is a chance he did not go overseas, but spent his time in training. I'm not sure what the CWS part of his unit designation means.

Hi all,
I was wondering if someone could do me a HUGE favor and look up my great grand uncle. I see there are two possible listings for him in "U.S., Headstone Applications for Military Veterans, 1925-1963", but I've already used up my free trial and can't afford to purchase a membership at this time.
His name is Richard Joseph Schuster (born 1889), and he is from New Jersey and died in either 1955 or 1960. Any help would be very greatly appreciated. My grandfather, his nephew, had told me when I was a kid that Richard had served during World War I, and I'm very curious to know more about what he did.
Thank you in advance!

I would not be surprised to learn a young man from Florida traveled up the Mississippi in 1915 to enlist at Missouri.

Wikipedia has an article on the 22nd Infantry regiment US Army that describes their service in World War I guarding the ports of NYC.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/22nd_Infantry_Regiment_%28Unite...

The US Army Heritage & Education Center is another place to search for information.

http://www.carlisle.army.mil/ahec
search for 22nd infantry regiment 1917 and it provides a book that looks interesting
Guarding the border: military memoirs 1912-1917

Good luck with your research.

Yes it is. You check off the box on the form: record is wanted for genealogy/family tree. In 2005 I sent for my deceased grandfather's records from WW II. Because of the fire at the records office, they did send me a certificate with the basic information, which, to me was great as it was at least a record for my family tree. What was really nice was in 2007 I received my grandfather's WW II medal & ribbon from the Army because the Military Archives discovered he never got them at his discharge. The web site is: https://vetrecs.archives.gov/VeteransRequest - Mail signature page to: NPRC WEB; 9700 Page Avenue; St. Louis, Missouri 63132-5100; FAX: (314)801-9049. You can mail or FAX the signature page. Customer Service Number: (314)801-0800. The record/records come by U.S. Postal Service and took about 2 weeks.

Annmarie

Yes, you can even do it over the net. However, if your ancestor was in WWII, most of those records burned in a fire in St. Louis, MO. I can't remember the name of the site, but I would try to Google Service Records of WWII Veterans, Try Variations on that. Records of Vets from Korean War to the present will not be available at this time. They just released WWII records last year. By the way if it is a WWII Record you need, then they will try to reconstruct the records. I spent $60 to find out the 3 times my Dad had a cold, a sinus infection, and Bronchitis. I didn't learn where or when. It was very frustrating. If you live West of the MS River, you will need to go to the St. Louis, MO address. I think Records east of the MS River, I think you looking for Washington, DC.

This is all I remember except it was incredibly frustrating. You can make your request on the net, but you'll have to wait for snail mail to get your records.

I hope this helps. Sorry I can't remember more.
Glenda Tolbert France

Any civilian records of deaths in military (1892)?

Lt. Charles H. Cochran died at Fort Logan, Colorado around Sept. 29, 1892 from typhoid fever. Would the only records of his death be with the military or would civilian authorities also have records? I assume any records for this time period would be with NARA, but I did not see any relevant listings in their microfilms online. And, it may be too early for civilian records as well.

I found his death location and cause from a newspaper article which I placed on his Find A Grave memorial here:

http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=gr&GRid=61...

He was serving at Fort Omaha in Nebraska immediately prior to his death and was transferred to Fort Logan, CO about a month before his death according to another newspaper article. He was a West Point graduate, class of 1883, serving in the 7th Infantry.

It could be a reference to a page and volume in the Provost's Department records. They were the military's police and prison departments. Have you checked with the Old Records Division to see if they have his personnel records?
I've had reconstructed records come with a single previous request for reissue of medals and a VA hospital request for transfer of medals. Then again I had one for another family member that had quite a bit of info from morning reports, hospital reports and some other forms. You'll never know until you spend the 25.00, but I would take the chance just to be sure all the bases for any information were covered.

I've found a record for Michael J. Harding, b. 1865 Ireland in the U.S. Army Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914.

The record seems to read:

21st Inf, D [Battallion and Company, I assume]
Des March 28 '89 [Deserted, I assume]
Surr'd September 27 1890 [Surrendered, I assume]
Did not surrender see 479/15 PRD 1891

The meaning of the first 3 lines seems clear enough, but I have no idea what the notation 'see 479/15 PRD 1891' means. Does 479/15 refer to another set of records? I have checked entry 479 of 1891 in this set of records and it is not relevant.
The record in question is on page 470 of the Register for 1885-1890 A-D. Any help greatly appreciated.

I am wondering if anyone can tell me if it is worth the $25 to get the "reconstructed" military records of my husband's grandfather. I got a letter in today that said his records were distroyed in the fire of 1973 but that they had a "reconstructed" file in his name. It then went on to say that it might not contain many military documents and that it might contain previous requests for his records. I cannot go to St. Louis to view them myself and am wondering if anybody else has gotten these "reconstructed" records. It's the previous requests that has me interested because my husband's grandfather had a daughter and we don't know if she is still alive or how to find her and if she tried to get his records at one time then that letter would be in this file. Would this be worth the $25 dollars to get it? Thanks in advance.

Buffalo Soldiers records now available to be searched

Today we released the U.S., Buffalo Soldiers, Returns From Regular Army Caval
ry Regiments, 1866-1916, http://search.ancestry.com/search/db.aspx?dbid=1934, to be searched on Ancestry.com. The records were keyed by contributors to the World Archives Project so searching the index is free.

After the Civil War the US Congress authorized the formation of the 9th and 10th Cavalry of black soldiers, as well as four black infantry regiments. This database covers Returns from Military Posts for the 9th and 10th cavalry, covering the years 1866 through 1916, when these "Buffalo Soldiers" served mostly in Texas and the southwest, but also in Cuba and the Philippines.

Like other Military Returns databases you will find information on these records that include soldiers' names, ranks, and the places and dates that they served.

The QMGME is some type of notation by the Quartermaster Corps, they are in charge of graves registration in the Army. I've seen the same notation with different numbers on other Army burial records like this one at Fort Rosecrans-

Allen, Ernestine, b. 03/01/1932, d. 07/22/1960, Qmgme-C 610 Dtd 27 Jul 60, Plot: W 644, bur. 08/02/1960

Am not an expert but your image is 245 of 379, if you go back to image 243 you will see that this appears to be a list of new recruits. First column is name, second is date of enlistment and the third is remarks. You can see that he enlisted on 15 Nov 1918. I think the remarks indicated he reported for duty on the 16th of Nov and journeyed from his residence in Cincinnati. If you scroll further down the list you will see it was to Paris Island, SC which is one of the Marine Corps basic training bases. Hope this helps. Don

The following link goes to my ancestor: Harry John Waechter as he appears on the Marine Muster Rolls

http://search.ancestry.com/iexec?htx=View&r=an&dbid=...

I want to know the meaning of the following information in the "Remarks section:
"16, Jd fr RS Cincinnati, Ohio"

I've tried looking through the rolls for a key, checking the message boards and Googling but I'm unable to find a key for the abbreviations used in the "Remarks" section.

Hope someone can help me understand this.
