I keep finding "militia" as occupation on many of my ancestors that lived in the VA/MD area during the 1600-1700's. I'm guessing that this was possibly a common thing, but is there any way to find out more?

Can I find what company? Possible campaigns? Etc.

And on a semi-related note, I'm told that there was a Sturgis who served with Custer at Little Big Horn. I've found his name, but by the 1700's, our family tree has become HUGE. It seems that, back then, people had 5-7 kids, they had 5 or 6 kids, THEY had 5 or 6 kids, etc.
It would be interesting to connect this Sturgis as well....
