Seeking information on US Army Deserters

I have rather an unusual request. I am seeing information on on US Army deserters that might help me confirm information I found that seems to indicate my one great grandfather was a deserter.

In the ancestry database U.S. Army, Register of Enlistments, 1798-1914 I found an Albion B Reed born in Bridgewater Mass. He enlisted in Buffalo NY Feb 24, 1877 and deserted on May 28, 1877. It looks like he enlisted in the 1st Artillery Regiment Co B. He enlisted at 24 which fits in age.

Albion is a sort of mystery as lived MA 1870-73 and ended up in OH where he died in 1897. I find him in a few OH directories between 1890-94. I cannot find him anywhere in the 1880 US census though. This enlistment would be the one of the few reference I have seen for him after 1873 if it is really my great grandfather.

Any assistance would be most appreciated.
