1840 enlisted - what other military records can this lead to?

Surnames: Smith
The Descriptive and Historical Register of Enlisted Soldiers of the Army states that William Smith was enlisted in 1839 for a 5-year stint but deserted in 1840. He was enlisted in Cleveland, Ohio; 8th Infantry Regiment, Company D.

I haven't done much military genealogy yet. Would he have any other types of military records attached to him?
