Annual Reunion of West Virginia/virginia Confederate Veterans Beckley, 1918

I ran across this while doing my own search and thought it may be of help to some folks..
Raleigh Register
August 1, 1918

West Virginia Confederate Veterans Will Meet Here

Preparations Already Under Way For Their Entertainment September 5th.

Beckley is to be the concentration point of all West Virginia soldiers of the Confederacy who still live on Thursday, September 5th. The annual state encampment of the old vets is to be held here on that day. A committee, headed by C. L. Beckner, is already at work on preparations to make their visit to Beckley one of the most pleasant of any of the state encampments ever held.

A feature of the encampment will probably be a bivouac of the old soldiers on the night of the 5th. Most of the attending veterans are expected to reach Beckley on the afternoon of Wednesday, September 4th. The 5th will be spent in entertainment and the business of the gathering, and on the 6th the heroes of the lost cause will disperse for another year.

On the committee of arrangements with Mr. Beckner are Captain James H. Lemon and J. O. Freeman. William Prince, of Prince, and I. C. Prine, of Beckley, are sponsors of the encampment, and they with the arrangements committee are planning entertainments for the visiting veterans that will be both novel and pleasing.

The coming of the veterans to Beckley for their state meeting stamps Beckley as a convention city of the first water. It will be the third state convention held here this year. First, in June, came the Odd Fellows state encampment, then in July the Loyal Order of Moose state convention, and now the annual state encampment of the Confederate Veterans. Our little mountain city is to be congratulated on these meetings.

A complete list of the men attending the reunion is as follows:

T. R. WEBB, Forest Hill, W. Va., 26th Battalion, Camp Allen Woodrum.

M. C. HAYS, Ansted, W. Va., Co. K, 14th Virginia Calvary [sic].

W. M. FOSTER, Indian Mills, W. Va., Co.
From "The Journal of James H. Hodam: Sketches and Personal Reminiscences of the Civil War as Experienced by a Confederate Soldier"
Edited by his great-grandson Robert P. Hodam.
Pub. 1995, 2nd. Ed.
Copyright 1995
Pages 49 - 54

The Civil War portion of this Journal was written between May 1901 and March 1902 from notes and diaries James kept during the War.

In Sept of 1862 at age 21 James Harrison Hodam of Roane County, VA joined the 17th Virginia Cavalry, Co. C, at Hillsboro (possibly Hillsboro Academy). James was an inveterate diarist and scribbler regarding the events of his life, using whatever was to hand to record his thoughts. He shared this trait with his father, Adam Hodam, who was also dabbled in what is now called folk art and taught James how to mix his own pigments and inks wherever he found himself. Born 14 Aug 1841 in Ohio, James' parents moved to what was then Roane Co, VA (now WVA) in 1844 to a 300 acre farm on Spring Creek nine miles downstream (north) of the current town of Spencer, WVA.

In Dec 1862 James was left behind on a farm family to recover from typhoid. A companion from his unit, John Hedges, was left to nurse him. In Feb 1863 they rejoined the 17th's Co. C at Camp Zircle, located two miles from Salem, Roanoke Co, VA. The following is James' list of men resident at Camp Zircle the rest of that winter, plus their fates as best he personally knew of them while writing his Journal in 1901-1902. I present this in honor of my late stepfather, Robert P. Hodam, in hopes that it will help someone get a little further along with their family genealogy. Spellings of proper and place names are those used by James.

Men Who Died in Camp between Dec 1862 and Feb 1863:

Will Blake
Sandford Groves
Alex Harris
William Harris Jr.
Sergeant George Sims
Jas. Westfall

Men Who Died in April 1863 (James Hodam assisted in their funeral rites):

David Crower
Isaac Groves
Elijah McCord
Marshall Smith

The Living:

Wm. H. French, Col.
Wm. Tavener, Lt. Col.
Frederick F. Smith, Major
Rev. Samuel Shepperd, Chaplain
Dr. E. S. James, Surgeon
Van Forson, Capt. and Quartermaster
Wingfield, Capt., Commissary
S. S. Barbee, Lt., Adjutant
Ben Gosch, Sergeant Major

Capt. Tavenor (James used both spellings) was promoted to Lt. Colonel of the regiment so there was a general promotion of the officers of Co. C. The following Roll is from James Hodam's original copy.

~~~~ Roll of Company C ~~~~
Commissioned Officers:
Wm.
Here is what I know about him. He's the son of Edmund Pearcy who is from the Bedford Co. Va. Pearcy family. Edmund Pearcy settled in Clark County, Indiana on the Ohio River ca.1820 and there are two records in the Indiana State Militia ca.1832-37 for an Ensign Andrew J. Pearsey and Captain A.I.(sic) Pearsey.
I thought this A.I. Pearsey was related to me but believe him to be the man who later became a Confederate Colonel. He moved to Illinois later and then to Missouri. I don't think he's a part of the Greenbriar Co. Va. family headed by Christian Piercy. That family is not related to the Bedford County family.
My GreatGreat Grandfather, Hosea Fitzwater b 16 Nov 1830 d 3 Feb 1865 was a saddler in the 7th WV Union Cavalry, Co. K. He enlisted in 1861 at Gauley Bridge and died of typhus at a hospital in Charleston WV 3 Feb 1865. He was from Kesslers Cross Lanes Nicholas Co WV. I am trying to find his place of burial. Would it have been in the Charleston WV area or back home? The war was still going on then so I wondered about his burial. I've searched all on~line cems for Nicholas Co WV and most of the Kanawha Co cems and all of the National Military on~line cems listings and have so far came up empty. Any one know? I have been looking at the WV Archives and am planning a trip there next Summer. Thank You, Lee
Jade, Thank you for your reply. You have thrown a different light on this search for me. His father died young, when he was a boy of 5 yrs. So, his mother probably had a hard way to go. I haven't been able to find their burial sites either and this could explain where the family could be buried~the old home site. I will check into this when I go to WV this coming Summer. Once again, thank you. Happy Hunting to you too~ Lee
I know quite a bit of time has gone by since this posting but thought I'd try anyway. I am very interested in William Bussey and any information you might have on him. What little I do have indicates he died in 1862 and left a wife Susannah and a son and daughter. The son I believe was William Foster Bussey my g grandfather. Looks like he may have been a Civil War casualty but not sure.
I am looking for information on Francis/ Francys Goff who was in Co. I 15th WV Infantry. I have him dying in 1862 and being buried in Tyler Co. VA. I'm guessing he might have died in camp before actually being in a battle. His wife was Elizabeth and she did receive his pension. In the 1860 Census, he, Elizabeth, and his son, Joseph were located in Harrison Co. VA. I am trying to find who his parents are. I'm hoping if I can determine where he joined up it might point me in his family's location.
Thanks,
Lucy Goff
Lee,
I know from my own research that families did try to retrieve the remains of their loved ones and their personal effects. For one of my ancestors and for a distant cousin, grave markers were erected (one in the nearest cemetery where many relatives were buried, and one on home ground of his parents). It is possible that his remains were taken home and that he was buried near his parents' home, or on their farm if they owned land. A marker may have been put up 'at home' even if the family could not retrieve the remains.
In these two instances, the families applied for Government headstones when they became available by law in 1879. I looked in the index of these records on ancestry.com and did not find a listing for your man.
An isolated marker on a farm might not be read as a 'cemetery' except by the most diligent of volunteers.
It is also possible that a marker was never erected. This happened with huge numbers of people everywhere. Probably the family intended to install a marker, but for one reason or other never did. If you look at family land records, sometimes a deed selling part or all of a farm mentioned that there was a graveyard on the cite to which access would be granted by the buyer, or excepted sale of the cemetery (often describing its location on the land). Such records would be among the deeds filed in the County Courthouse, which you must search in person or hire a researcher to do so for you.
Good hunting,
Jade
Matthew,
There are general genealogical guides on the web, such as available from the Rootsweb.com home page and the LDS' regional guides accessible at www.familysearch.org.
Also buy at least one general genealogical guide. There are two types: one gives you an idea of how to organize information, and another type (_The Source_ is the most detailed) tells you what kinds of records are available.
Your question does not specify what Military records you are after. For the Civil War there were both County Militia and State Troops on the Union side, and mainly State units on the CSA side. Types of records available are mainly Service Records and Pension Application Files, both available from the National Archives in Washington, DC, but the microfilms can be borrowed by inter-library loan and many of the Service records are indexed and viewable on footnote.com which has a free trial period.
Again for Civil War, once you know the name and residence of a person you think could have served, go to this site:
http://www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/
--where you can search by name, and if you get a likely result you can click on the Regimental link to look at the general service record of the Regiment. From the site you can also just search for the Regiment.
Some persons have developed interests in particular Regiments and posted interesting information on the web, so it's worth the while to do an Internet search once you have found a Regimental ID of interest.
One way to get an idea of who could have served in what war is to make a Chronology in a word-processing program for each family, including around 3 or 4 generations in each Chronology. Dates of birth and death can rule out possible military service. For example, someone born in 1830 could not have served in the Revolutionary War or the War of 1812, but could have served in the Mexican War or possibly the Civil War.
My Chronologies include birth dates, death dates, marriage dates, approximate dates of moving from one place to another, and dates (definitely including the source of the evidence, such as church or County record) of supporting records such as Vital records, buying and selling land, when and where estates were probated, dates Guardians were appointed and the details (from County Court records), Census enumeration details, tax assessments . . . you get the idea.
For the most part, of course, this requires that you do the actual research in person in local records. One of the most interesting things to be found in local records is an ancestor's Estate Inventory, listing their personal property at the time of death: this gives a real insight as to how people were living at the time.
A Chronology can also help sort out if you might be confusing two same-named individuals.
Good hunting
Jade
