My great grandfather, Benjamin Franklin Sammons was a WV cavalryman who was injured at Wayne Court House (shot through the left side of his neck).

He originally enlisted under the WV home guards in 1861 but moved around quite a bit (he served for a time at Libby Prison in Richmond). I'm not sure which unit he was under during the Wayne Court House action.

Have you uncovered any additional information on the action at Wayne Court House? I love to see it if you have.

Thanks!

David Keller

Apparently one of his daughters gave it to her nephew Rex Roop. I think Mr. Roop has passed away and possibly his nephew j. Vaughn Roop has it or possibly past it down to someone else. I would like know who has it and can I get a photo of it.
Private James Lilly Senior

GRAVE 2086 AT CAMP CHASE READS- J. LILLEY SR. CO. E 151 VA. MIL. CSA
GRAVE 2086 should be Private James Lilly Senior Company E 151st Regiment Virginia Militia CSA It would appear that the majority of the Lilly families were a colorful lot from Western Virginia. Many of the Lilly's had nicknames such as John (Snakebite) Lilly; Joseph (Crazy Joe) Lilly; not to be confused with Isaac (Crazy Ike) Lilly; Joseph (Blind Joe) Lilly; Allen (One eyed Allen) Lilly; Samuel (Devil Sam) Lilly; William (One Arm Bill) Lilly. John (Big John) Lilly; Robert (Shooting Bob) Lilly; Andy (Sock Head) Lilly; One of the few not to have nicknames was Green Lilly. (The Lilly family was one of the largest families in (West) Virginia, perhaps they needed nicknames to tell them apart. It's with little surprise that I find James Lilly Senior enlisting in the Confederate Army at age 54 in 1861. If a Union soldier had become lost, in my opinion the last family he would want to meet were the Lilly's of Mercer County (West) Virginia. The family may have been a fun loving bunch who just had a wonderful sense of humor but on the other hand they may have been what their nicknames had described. Sometimes family members were divided in their loyalties among North and South. The Lilly's of Mercer County (West) Virginia were 100% Confederate. According to his Compiled Military Service Records he is listed as Private James M. Lilly of Company E 151st Regiment Virginia Militia and enlisted on August 23, 1861 in Mercer County (West) Virginia. (Some Lilly family histories have his middle initial as a W which may be plausible as W's were many times thought to be M's and vice-versa because of trying to interpret handwriting) Many of the Virginia Militia units were organized in 1861 and many had ties to (West) Virginia. Some of the Virginia Militia units would organize and then go home until their neck of woods were threatened thus giving an appearance as guerilla units to their adversaries especially in late 1861 and early 1862. With some of the members of the Virginia Militia units being home it was difficult for the Union Army to distinguish who was Confederate and who was civilian. One of the tactics used by the Federal Army was the sworn testimonies of loyal Union citizens who would identify their neighbors as Confederates. The Confederate Army at times would use the same tactics when they controlled the area. Although records do not specifically note how Private James Lilly Senior was captured on January 23, 1862 in Mercer County (West) Virginia by Federal troops he may have been captured in the atmosphere noted above. According to the 1850 census James Lilly was born about 1805 while the 1860 census has him listed as being born about 1806 both agree he was born in Virginia. The 1850 census has the Lilly family broken down into the following household members: James Lilly (father) age 45, Prunella Lilly (mother) age 37, John W. Lilly age 19, William J. Lilly age 16, Sarah Lilly age 14, Lewis Lilly age 12, Emily Lilly age 10, (Emily may have played a prominent role later on in this short biography of Private James Lilly Senior and mentioned by a future United States President) James Lilly age 7, (He too will be mentioned again later on) Green Lilly age 2, Harmon Lilly was just born. James Lilly Senior was listed as being a farmer and living near the Post Office at Princeton, (West) Virginia. In 1850 his family was listed as living in district 42 in Mercer County (West) Virginia. The 1860 census has the Lilly family broken down into the following household members: James Lilly (father) age 54, Nelly Lilly (mother) age 47, John Lilly age 28, Lewis Lilly age 22, Emily Lilly age 20, James Lilly age 17, Green Lilly age 12, Harman Lilly age 10, (Note in the 1850 census his name was spelled Harmon) Gitaner Lilly age 8. In the 1860 census the family was living in "My Division" district of Mercer County (West) Virginia and James Lilly Senior was still farming. The Lilly families are believed to have come to America in the 1600 hundreds and one of the first families to settle in (West) Virginia in the area of Summers County (West) Virginia in which county Private James Lilly was believed to have been born. He married Prunella Mann in the early 1830's. It would appear that the only household member of the Lilly family from Mercer County (West) Virginia not to survive the War was the father James Lilly Senior. (The village of Lilly is a former settlement in Summers County, West Virginia. Lilly was located on the Bluestone River east of Ellison. Lilly appeared on maps as late as 1924. It is believed that the town was named after the first Lilly's who settled the area. Trying to control the flooding in this area the Bluestone Dam was established about 1946 and with it the settlement of Lilly) Four Lilly's of the Lilly household were captured on January 23, 1862 in Mercer County (West) Virginia. They were: 1) James Lilly Senior 2) James Lilly Junior 3) Green Lilly 4) John Lilly and all were listed as being with the 151st Regiment Virginia Militia. James Lilly Senior was listed as being age 55 with a dark complexion and blue eyes and standing 5'6" in height. James Lilly Junior was listed as being age 19 with a dark complexion and blue eyes and standing 5'10". Green Lilly was listed as being age 21 with a dark complexion and blue eyes and standing 5'4". John Lilly's physical description was not listed. (Note that both the 1850 and 1860 census have James Lilly Jr. being 5 years older than Green Lilly if this is true then Green Lilly would have been 13 or 14 years of age) Both James Senior and James Junior Lilly were charged with treason (an indication that they may have been arrested at the Lilly home however one of the questions ask upon their arrest were the men in arms? The answer was YES) Green Lilly's and John Lilly's charges were not noted. Both James Senior and James Junior were imprisoned on February 6, 1862. The following is speculation upon my part. {The normal procedure for captured Confederates at that specific time period would have been a temporary holding at Camp Piatt, (West) Virginia just below Charleston, (West) Virginia and then sent to the Athenaeum prison in Wheeling, (West) Virginia, and then to Camp Chase by railroad. It is of my opinion that the imprisonment date of February 6, 1862 would be the Athenaeum Prison.} Private James Lilly Senior Company E 151st Regiment Virginia Militia would die at the Camp Chase Prison on July 12, 1862 of chronic diarrhea. From time to time we are blessed with letters or additional information about the individual, in this case it came from a creditable source in the form of a diary written by future United States President Rutherford B. Hayes then a Lieutenant Colonel of the 23rd Ohio Volunteer Infantry. In Volume 2 [Page 313] it states: "July 30, 1862. Wednesday.--I set the men to drilling in the new target practice. Rode with Bottsford over to see Mrs. Lilley, an old lady whose husband, James Lilley, lately died at Camp Chase in prison. Her son James is still there. As the only male member of the family old enough to do work, I am inclined to ask for his release. Her daughter Emily, a well-appearing young woman, is accused of giving the information which led to bushwhacking Captain Gilmore's cavalry. I hope it is not so." (Note that Hayes spelled the name as Lilley and not Lilly. Also note that on June 1, 1862 the 23rd O.V.I. received "new" weapons, smooth-bore muskets that had been rifled and altered from flintlock to percussion. This would explain the target shooting that Hayes referred to) (Also note that on page 208 of Hayes diary he mentions the name of Christ Lilley as one of the men who attacked Captain Gilmore, William {Christ} Lilly, another nickname, the Lilly's even had future President Hayes as calling them by their nicknames) Private James Lilly Senior may have died in the early morning hours of July 12, 1862 because he was buried the same day by Brotherlin & Halms (contracted government undertakers) in grave #19 at the Southeast City Cemetery at Columbus, Ohio. The Ohio Adjutant General had James Lilley Senior as being a civilian from Mercer County (West) Virginia which has probably led to the confusion over his true status. Like Lt. Colonel Hayes he misspelled the name of Lilly. Private James Lilly's body would be re-interred to the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery by Captain Irving of the United States Quartermasters Department in May of 1869 and buried in grave #2086 at the Camp Chase Confederate Cemetery. Private James Lilly is one of the oldest soldiers buried at Camp Chase but not the oldest to die at Camp Chase as that stat would be reserved for a true civilian. Prunella Lilly would pass away in 1870 just six years before Hayes would run for President. Of the over 2,000 Confederate tombstones at Camp Chase today only 1 has a note leaning in front of the tombstone protected by the weather. It is the grave of Private James Lilly Senior. I hope the note will always stay there as a reminder to him and this great and historic American family.
JAMES LILLY SENIOR OWNED NO SLAVES according to the census of 1860 slave schedule.

Help Save the 60th Virginia Flag!

Greetings Southern Comrades,

I am requesting your assistance with getting the message out for a very important cause. The cause is the preservation and restoration of the 60th Virginia Regimental flag located in the Museum of the Confederacy. This flag is about to be lost to time and is in dire need of preservation. On August 3, 2012 permission was granted by the Museum of the Confederacy to seek donations to protect and preserve this valuable piece of American History. The flag has not been previously conserved or treated and was among the 282 unidentified regimental flags held by the U.S. War Department that were returned to The Museum of the Confederacy (MOC), per Joint Resolution No. 43 of June 29, 1906. It was delivered to the MOC on July 13, 1906. While the museum was located within the White House of the Confederacy, the flag was stored there. When the new museum facility opened in 1976, it was transferred into that building (where it resides today).

The condition is of such a concern that the conservator has recommended that this flag be advanced "at the top of the priority list to halt any further loss." There is much damage from battle and time, but this is a very viable piece for restoration. Much work needs to be done and soon.

The expense for restoration is $16,500, but we believe that we cannot put a price tag on what this flag represents. Many men were wounded or died beneath this flag, marching straight into the enemy. In our hearts they have all marched into immortality.

Please go to: http://www.60thvirginiainfantryregiment.com to obtain more information about this hard fighting regiment and help save this flag.

Combined Roster, 113th and 10th Regiments WV Militia

Am trying to locate someone who has access to the original mss. of this roster if it exists (or who has better info than I have). I've found two transcriptions for my family. One names my ancestor as Leonard Flowers and the other as Lemuel. I have a Lemley and a John Lemuel Flowers in my family, but no Leonard, and an trying to find out who was in the militia:
Source: Combined Roster: 113th and 10th Regiments, U. S. Genweb Archives (http://files.usgwarchives.net/wv/wood/military/union.txt). The Genweb transcription says Leonard. The WV Memory Project Combined Roster names Jacob Flowers, Lemuel Flowers, and William Flowers, from Wood Co. All enrolled July 1863 with the 113th: http://www.wvculture.org/history/wvmemory/mil.aspx, the West Virginia Memory Project.
Another question arises, since John Lemuel registered for the draft in 1863. Would someone who was already in a militia register?
Thanks for any help. I'm a military dummy.

Actually this is not correct, as there were training facilities. Camp Dennison near Cincinnati was one, Camp Chase near Columbus another, and Camp Curtin outside of Harrisburg was yet another. When the West Virginia units were being organized and commissioned, Governor Boreman decided to have Company A, the "snakehunters" of the 11th erect Fort Boreman that later became a site for training the basics.

Yes, for the most part, the West Virginia units had to set camps nearby, and the 11th used Parkersburg as a place to train but NOT always. Company K, of the 11th spent time in Parkersburg and Spencer. Camp McDonald (on Perrigrine's farm) in Arnoldsburg was started by Rathbone with the idea of a training facility but gave up when he was attacked there (primarily southern bushwhackers controlled much of Calhoun County).

Camp Chase trained several regiments from West Virginia.

Unit organized in Morgan Co., now WV, under Col. Samuel Johnston; Co. B under (his son?), Capt. Samuel Johnston. Ordered to rendezvous at Winchester, VA, by order of the Governor, 13Jul1861. Of ten companies, only A, B, C, D, and H reported. Participated in BLOOMERY GAP SKIRMISH, 14Feb1862, in Hampshire Co., now WV. 89th Militia appears to have disbanded and members assigned or joined other units, esp. 31ST VA INFANTRY (formerly MILITIA) from nearby Frederick Co., VA. This unit served in numerous battles until Lee's surrender (only 7 officers and 49 men left). WV CULTURE AND HISTORY website indicates an 1862 effort to organize a Union 89th VA Militia, under the Restored VA Govt. at Wheeling, now WV, but not successful. See also individual records at CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS AND SAILORS SYSTEM and detailed card information at FOLD3.COM.
Hope this helps, steven69her@aol.com

Early in the Civil War there was a Union army "fort" in Boone County that was attacked and destroyed Sept. 17, 1861. Historical sources indicate several places where the fort was:

- Pond Fork (settlement on the Pond Fork below Bald Knob)
- Skin Fork (creek of Pond Fork below Bald Knob)
- Walnut Gap (pass through the mountains on the Boone-Wyoming counties line). There is a "Burnt Camp Branch Road" at Pond Fork.

I would appreciate any information to help locate the actual site of this fort and whether remains are still visible.

The book I have is the history of the 62nd Virginia Infantry and is part of the Virginia Regimental History Series. On page 110 under the roster is this info. "Balaam Teter: Pvt., 1st Co. E and 2nd Co. C. Enl. 9/4/62 in Pendleton Co., W.Va. Present as of 4/30/63. Seperated from the service prior to 8/31/63, reason not stated. Living in Kansas as of 3/1/1910." Mahala Calhoun was born in 1818 and married Enoch Teter on 3/10/1836 in Pendleton Co. She was the daughter of William Calhoun and Elizabeth Mallett. William was born 6/2/1793 and died 2/2/1873 and was a veteran of the war of 1812. Williams parents were John and Elizabeth Calhoun.

What is the name of the book that you have? Is there any info in there on Balaam Teter (2nd Great Grandfather) he was in the 62nd Virginia Mounted Infantry Regiment. Also, I have a Mahala Calhoun (married a Teter) and Phoebe A Calhoun (married a Hinkle) both from West Virginia. I was wondering if any of these are in relation to you? I have no other info on them other than who they married...any info would help look forward to hearing from you.

Matthew was not a Confederate soldier. Matthew was what is called a Citizen or Home Guard. There is a Matthew W. Ford in a Virginia regiment but that is not our Matthew. The story handed down in my family is that Matthew was acting as a sort of scout for some lost Confederate soldiers when he was captured along with the soldiers and taken to Camp Chase. Matthew Nathan Ford will not be listed on any military roster. Matthew was considered a Confederate Sympathyser and therefore fair game to be taken prisoner. It is unknown where the capture took place but most likely in or close to Wyoming County Virginia (West Virginia) since that was where he lived.

Yes. On the "West Virginia Division Of Culture & History" website there is an article that describes the Civil War, skirmish by skirmish, in West Virginia. It is called "The Civil War in West Virginia". It describes the Jones-Imboden Raid under the year 1863. It describes the harassment of Union troops by the Confederates (their words, not mine) which was supposed to destroy portions of the B&O railroad and break up the Restored Government of Virginia which was meeting in Wheeling. This began at the end of April and went on thru the middle of May. It included a march thru Beverley, capturing of Morgantown & Buckhannon, march thru Weston, West Union, & Cairo, an attempt to destroy the B&O at Rowlesburg in Preston County, and the destruction of the railroad bridge at Fairmount. They also destroyed 150,000 barrels of oil and the oil works at Burning Springs in Wirt County. The article breaks it down into details about commanders, troops, and troop movements. This raid may not be the correct one you were asking about but the article may help you figure out which one is the right one! Good Luck!

My gg grandfather, George Atkinson, was born in Ohio 1846 and married Sarah Agnes Britton in Washington County, Ohio. He lived at least part of his life in Ritchie County, WV, near or with daughter, Nettie Atkinson Cunningham. George is buried in Harmony Grove Cemetery, Ritchie County. The following is engraved on his headstone: " Oct 20,1846; co.C, 13th WV Inf., Civil War." I have not been able to get his service information from Washington.......Is it possible he was enlisted in Ohio & mustered out in WV? Any link to Co. C, 13th WV Inf? Any other descendants??Thanks...
>
