Unit organized in Morgan Co., now WV, under Col. Samuel Johnston; Co. B under (his son?), Capt. Samuel Johnston. Ordered to rendezvous at Winchester, VA, by order of the Governor, 13Jul1861. Of ten companies, only A, B, C, D, and H reported. Participated in BLOOMERY GAP SKIRMISH, 14Feb1862, in Hampshire Co., now WV. 89th Militia appears to have disbanded and members assigned or joined other units, esp. 31ST VA INFANTRY (formerly MILITIA) from nearby Frederick Co., VA. This unit served in numerous battles until Lee's surrender (only 7 officers and 49 men left). WV CULTURE AND HISTORY website indicates an 1862 effort to organize a Union 89th VA Militia, under the Restored VA Govt. at Wheeling, now WV, but not successful. See also individual records at CIVIL WAR SOLDIERS AND SAILORS SYSTEM and detailed card information at FOLD3.COM.
