Matthew was not a Confederate soldier. Matthew was what is called a Citizen or Home Guard. There is a Matthew W. Ford in a Virginia regiment but that is not our Matthew. The story handed down in my family is that Matthew was acting as a sort of scout for some lost Confederate soldiers when he was captured along with the soldiers and taken to Camp Chase. Matthew Nathan Ford will not be listed on any military roster. Matthew was considered a Confederate Sympathyser and therefore fair game to be taken prisoner. It is unknown where the capture took place but most likely in or close to Wyoming County Virginia (West Virginia) since that was where he lived.
