At our local library there is a book, The History of Fayette County which was published about 1920 or so. Included in this book is a paragraph that states that my second great grandfather was commissioned by Governor John Letcher, as Colonel of the Active Virginia Forces on May 5, 1861.

Can someone tell me how to go about getting documentation that may be needed to prove his role in the war?

You can email me at atnvolsgirl@wmconnect.com if you wish.

Thank you.

William Goddard:4th Reg. Inf. Vols.

My great great grandfather was in the Civil War. I dont know too much, though. His name was William Goddard. He was born in 1833 and died in 1915. He was married to Matilda C. Lemmons. Matilda was born in 1860 and died in 1915. Their daughter, Frances (America, Mamie, ect) was my great grandmother. She was born in 1880 and married J. Ervin Foster. As the story goes, he recieved a land patent for his services in the war. The land was located at Mount Olive (Fayette CO, WV). It is also known as Marting Mountain. It is between Montgomery(Kanawha CO) and Gauley Bridge(Fayette CO). This is where some of the family still lives, including me. I saw a site that listed a William J. Goddard. It was a Civil War Medal list. It stated that he was in the 4th Regiment Infantry Volunteers. I believe this is my William Goddard. I have no further info though. I cant even find where he is buried. His daughter is buried here at Mount Olive. I believe he may be buried in Cedar Grove (Kanawha CO). I saw a Cedar Grove site that had him listed, but when I tried to get into the site, it said it had been removed.
Kaci Helene Foster

My gggrandfather served in the 4th also. He was Josiah T. Brooks. I have all of his service records. He died from pneumonia in July of 1864 at Gallipolis, Ohio and is buried there. I believe that he was from Ohio. His wife and children lived in Meigs Co. and I know his wife's family was from there. Unable to track down any syblings or parents of Josiah T. His records didn't even give me a birthdate. Do you have any idea of how I might go about finding information about the service medal given to those who died from illness and served the State of WVA? Josiah was in Company F. Hope to hear from you.
