I am not sure how much information is on hand, but I have been trying to locate additional information on a few men who served in Co A, 17th VA Calvary. I thought I would reach out to you and your organization for your assistance and expertise on trying to get further information collected. Here is the information I am aware of currently:

Roster showing all 4 brothers (sons of John M. McClaugherty & Phoebe Hale) with Company A, 17th Virginia Regiment of Cavalry
A roll of Company A, 17th Virginia Cavalry Regiment (Mercer County Company) :
http://www.kinyon.com/westvirginia/midnewriver/appendixg2.ht...

Edward Hale McClaugherty (Lieut.) --> died in battle. Do you have records as to when he died and what battle or what happened that caused his death?
John McClaugherty (Men of the Line)
Joseph H. McClaugherty (Men of the Line)
Nelson H. McClaugherty (Men of the Line)

All 4 McClaugherty brothers were assigned to the same regiment. but having difficulty finding additional information about them. Here is what I have located:

Concerning Edward Hale McClaugherty
http://www.kinyon.com/westvirginia/midnewriver/appendixc4.ht...
Edward McClaugherty, another great-grandson of Edward Hale, was a lieutenant in Company A, 17th Virginia Regiment of Cavalry, and died in the service.

http://www.kinyon.com/westvirginia/midnewriver/chapter7m.htm
When Captain William H. French was promoted to the rank of Colonel, Captain J. W. Graybeal became Captain of Company A and Judson Ellison and W. A. Reed became Lieutenants, together with Edward McClaugherty, in the place of Ellison resigned.

Concerning Joseph H. McClaugherty
http://www.kinyon.com/westvirginia/midnewriver/chapter7m.htm
On the first day at Gettysburg, after the Federal line had been broken, Captain Robert Gore, of Company D, distinguished himself by dashing in front of the Federal lines alone, and capturing 150 of the retreating enemy. After the first day's fight was over the 17th Regiment took charge of and guarded the 5,000 prisoners captured on that day. On the retreat from Pennsylvania this brigade of Jenkins had quite a lively fight with the enemy near Boonesboro, in which Joseph H. McClaughterty of Company A, was wounded.

Thank you for time & any assistance that you are able to offer,

I am needing help locating a Civil war vet. He is my 3x great grandfather.

His name is Samuel Joseph Wilson
Born in Davidson Co, NC 18 Jan 1835
Word of mouth in the family is that he died in Staunton Hosp due to wounds he got in the war.
He ws married to Mary Elizabeth Burkett in Smyth Co, Va in 1858.
The 1860 census shows them living in Abingdon, Washington co, Virginia

I have tried searching the LVA but come up with nothing. There are tons of Samuel Wilson's that were in the war so it is hard to tell which one he is.

Is there anyone with ANY info on him? He just dropped off the face of the Earth after 1860. An 1870 census shows he is not with his wife.

If you don't have any info, do you have any suggestions on where I can go now?
Thanks!
Sandy
wv.sandy@suddenlink.net
Re: Burial Place of Union Soldier Killed at Charles City Cross Roads, VA

If you'd like general information about the recovery of remains from the Charles City Crossroads battlefield, see my reply to Beaney in this master thread. As I did for him, I checked the Roll of Honor for your ancestor, Mr. Unthank, and he was not listed as a recovered Union soldier from Charles City or anywhere else. This doesn't mean his body wasn't recovered from a battlefield, but only that it could not be identified.

You also stated in your post that you have no proof that he died in the Charles City Crossroads battle to which Beaney referred. If you have no proof, why do you believe he died here? Have you obtained a copy of his service record from the National Archives? If you have and a card says he was killed at Charles City Crossroads or Glendale on June 30, then that is your proof. Those cards are transcriptions from official company and regimental journals that were kept by army clerks at the time of the battle, and they are almost always accurate.

There's one additional concern. You wrote that your ancestor was killed on June 30, 1863, not 1862. The Charles City Crossroads battle to which Beaney referred was fought in 1862, and if you have reason to think your ancestor was killed on June 30, 1863, it's unlikely he died at Charles City Crossroads.

I can't say for certain that there was no minor skirmishing in the Charles City Crossroads vicinity on June 30, 1863, but the respective armies were quite far from Charles City Crossroads on that date. The Confederacy's Army of Northern Virginia was in south central Pennsylvania, destined to do battle at Gettysburg the next day. And the Union army was in hot pursuit, mostly strung out along assorted roads in northern Maryland, hurrying to catch up to Robert E. Lee's army. Your reference to 1863 might simply be a typographical error, I realize, but if it's what you intended to write, then your ancestor likely died somewhere other than Charles City Crossroads.

It is likely that your ancestor went into a temporary grave containing several soldiers, and that there was nothing sufficiently distinguishing about him to permit identification at a later date.

During the Civil War, it was common practice for deceased soldiers to be buried on the battlefield, given the logistical problems associated with removing their bodies to proper cemeteries in a tactically active war theater. Certain officers were removed as a courtesy to their families, but enlisted personnel almost always went into the ground very near the place where they fell. They might be removed a short distance to be grouped with other bodies in a single mass grave, but burial details didn't haul bodies very far. With dozens, hundreds, or even thousands of rotting corpses to bury, the gravediggers took whatever approach seemed fastest and most efficient.

Friends of a dead soldier, typically other soldiers from his company, might bury him in an individual grave if they had the time or inclination, and then place over the grave a wooden marker with his name and unit inscribed. These markers were soon deteriorated by weather, though, and many were scattered by foraging animals or taken by local citizens or later soldiers for firewood. Foraging wild animals, incidentally, were especially destructive, digging up the relatively shallow graves to access the decaying carion that they smelled beneath the soil.

Late in the war and for several years after the war, the Union government embarked on an extensive relocation program in which battlefields were searched for Union remains. Probably a majority of battlefield graves were located and their deceased soldiers reinterred into newly created Federal cemeteries.

Soldiers were not issued dogtags by the Government in those days, but soldiers sometimes purchased name and unit medallions from sutlers and sewed these into the lining of their uniforms, in order that their bodies might be identified if they were killed. Also, some soldiers simply wrote their names into the inside of shirt collars and waistbands, saving themselves the cost of a medallion, but clothes buried with a body typically rotted beyond effective inspection before most reinterments occurred.

When the re-burial program was completed, the Army published a comprehensive list of the reinterments. An alphabetical index identified every Union soldier recovered from a battlefield and/or placed into any National Cemetery. I have a copy of the publication (US Quartermaster's Roll of Honor) and I looked up Oliver Bath without success. The only two soldiers named "Bath" in the index were Charles Bath of the 93rd New York, who died in 1864 and was buried on Long Island NY, and Augustus Bath from an unspecified NY regiment who was killed and buried in North Carolina, also in 1864. There were also two soldiers named John Bathe who were reinterred under the program.

Finally, remember that although the battle in which your ancestor was killed was a tactical draw, McClellan was in retreat mode at the time and was scurrying to get his army away from Robert E. Lee. Therefore, his army didn't stick around on the battlefield any longer than necessary after the fighting, and so the probability is high that your ancestor was initially buried by Confederate soldiers, Southern contractors hired specifically for burials, or very possibly, slaves.

The bottom line here is that Oliver Bath was probably buried very near where he fell, most likely within one or two days after his death, and that all or a portion of his remains were retrieved by the United States government a few years later, and subsequently placed in a grave marked "unknown."

As for where Oliver's reinterment grave and "unknown" marker might be, I fully expect it's the Glendale National Cemetery, located about a dozen miles southeast of Richmond, VA. After all, the cemetery's grounds are actually on a portion of your ancestor's final battlefield, so I can't imagine they'd have taken his bones anywhere else.

If you want to visit his grave, you'll need to walk past the approximately 960 Civil War "unknowns" interred at Glendale. You won't know which one of those 960 graves is his, but you'll almost certainly have walked within a few feet of whatever may still remain of him.

My gggrandfather, William M. Davis from Rappahannock Co., VA was in the 49th Virginia Infantry Regiment, fought all the major battles and was captured at the battle of Moorefield and sent to Camp Chase Aug. 1865, transferred to Point Lookout, MD. March 1865. He had two brothers who were with Josh S. Mosby Irregular Cavalry (Mosby's Rangers). One brother, George C. Davis was also an agent. he was captured Feb. 1864 in Fauquier Co. VA. and sent to Old Capitol Prison, transferred to Fort Delaware June, 1865. Another brother, Gibson Clay Davis (also with Mosby) He was captured Oct. 1864 at Upperville and sent to Old Capitol Prison until Feb. 1865 and transferred to Fort Warren, released June, 1865. I have found through "Fold 3" Case files relating to investgation of subversive activities, and in the bottom of his statement he states he has a brother in the CM Dept.at Alexandria, VA. Does anyone know what "C M" would stand for? I don't know which brother he was speaking of. Also have no idea about subversive activities.
Hi from Texas, Mary Jane.

I have a beautiful descendants chart, which I found a lot of information in, showing all the people descended from Laurent Viau (dit Lesperance). Those people include us.

Your great-grandfather and my grandfather were brothers, and they're both on the chart.

Email me at FIL04ataoldotcom (that's a zero after the L, not a letter oh), and I'll send you a link to this page. It's titled "Viau-Monal-Miner-Larmore..."

Also, I'm starting a new thread called MJ Larmore FI Larmore, so we can chat on that thread. My relative on this present thread is on my mother's side of the family!

Regards,

Frank

Mary Jane,
Here we are back on my father's side of the family! I had been corresponding on this thread with a relative on my mother's side.

HAVE YOU SEEN this whole Viau-Minal-Miner-Larmore document, which someone so lovingly compiled? It's at: http://www.leveillee.net/ancestry/viaularmore.htm

The brothers Louis Larmore b. 1863 (your great-great grandfather) and Ovila Joseph Larmore b. 1870 (my grandfather) are clearly shown on this descendants chart. I.e, the chart contains the descendants of Laurent Viau (dit Lesperance) b. 1714.

Louis Larmore is person No. 7's child No. iv., and he is also No. 10. Your grandfather Arthur Louis Larmore is person No. 10's child No. v. The writer of this document apparently didn't have A.L.L.'s descendants' names, such as your father and you.

Meanwhile, Ovila Joseph Larmore is person No. 7's child No. vii, and he is also person No. 12. My father, Lawrence Louis Larmore, is person No. 12's child No. 6. (My father was born in 1911, not 1914.) You'll notice from my father's entry in the chart that he was born in Connecticut when the family lived there. However, he was brought up in upstate New York, in the town of Wappinger's Falls.

(I have made up my mind to construct a similar chart for the people on my mother's side, perhaps starting with my 3rd great-grandfather, Thomas Sands b. 1767.)

Frank Larmore

PS
I'm in Houston. Do write to me at FIL04 at aol.com. That's a zero, not the letter oh. After that, I will mail you a "pedigree" chart that I wrote with the help of the Viau-Minal-Miner-Larmore descendants chart and other sources.

I'm searching for the Civil War records for my 3rd great grandfather, Thomas Jefferson Osborne (spelling could have been Osburn/Osborne/etc). One source has him listed as Confederate belonging to the 18th Infantry VA, Company K 4th Regiment. Another with similar birthdate & info lists as Union 7/8th Infantry Company H out of Clay Co WV. I would greatly appreciate any info in clarifying this matter.

Sandy,
Far from it! I live in Houston. But I told my wife the other day that we really needed to go up and see some of the old cemeteries we've read about. That is, the ones with my ancestors, such as Hollywood Cemetery and that Cheesecake Cemetery near Williamsburg.

We were over in South Carolina last week, but it was a very short trip. Virginia later. We certainly should meet.

I have prepared a pedigree, which is rather easy. I really admire people like you who can put together extensive descendants lists. On my father's side, most of the blanks were filled in by o-n-e long descendants document, starting with a man in Quebec in the 17th Century. At the end of the document was my father's name and his brother and sisters!

If you send me your mailing address, I'll mail you that pedigree document just for fun. I've already shared it with my children and sister and two first cousins, as a shortcut for their building their own.

Regards,
Frank Larmore

PS
My guess is that we'd find Alexander Hamilton SANDS information in military documents from the Confederate forces' records. I don't know what sorts of records survived the burning of Richmond, or if such papers would have been
kept instead at some other military location.

Sir, my gg grandfather James Gallagher was with the 27th VA. He was a 1st SGT for Company B, enlisted in 1861, wounded at Chancellorsville 1863, missed G-burg because of it, captured at the Mule Shoe at Spotsylvania 1864, exchanged and surrendered at Appomattox 1865 - I have his records. He was sworn in By LTC Echols on 15 May 1861 in Allegheny County. In addition, I am a 1st Lt for Company 'C' 27th VA, re-enactment group. The 27th was at First Manassas to Appomattox and most of the boys were from the Valley. My grandfather was a labourer There is a book on the 27th out there, I got my copy via e-bay.

Hope this helps - if you want more information, let me know.

Bill McGowan

I am not aware of any relation to A Crawford Jackson. However I do not have records of Andrew Jackson's children, if he had any. I do know his wife's name was Virginia E. Johnson. I hope that that helps. If you need any other information on Peyton that I can provide just ask. I'll be sure to try and help.

My husband's great grandfather was a 2nd Lt. in the 27th VA Infantry, Company C. His name was Samuel B. Loury (Lowry/Lowery), b. 1836/37 Alleghany Co, VA. In 1860 he resided in Alleghany Co, VA (Covington/Falling Springs area) and enlisted (for 1 yr) at Jackson’s River 10 May 1861 (Capt. Lewis Holloway); mustered into service @ Staunton, VA 15 May 1851 by Col. John Echols. He left service 23 Apr 1862—at that point his rank was Lt.
I would like to learn more about this unit from enlistment through Apr 1862. I have requisition records from Samuel Loury at Camp Zollicoffer (Feb/1862) and Camp Buchanan (Mar/1862). The Camp Zollicoffer records list him as commander of Company C. I am curious about the locations of these camps and wonder if anyone might have more information. I have read the Garibaldi letters which shed some light on this unit. Also, as someone else indicated, are there any pictures from this unit? We have strong Loury family connections in Alleghany Co, VA--I would be happy to share information that I have.
In 1868, Alleghany Co, she married my husband's gr grandfather, Samuel B Loury who served in company C- 27th VA infantry-- he enlised Jackson's River, Alleghany Co 05/1861-- long history of family connections in that area.

I am looking for any information on the family of John T. Owen, who served in the 6th Virginia. His sister, Fannie, had a child with my Great-great-grandfather William Lawson Griffin, who served in the 5th NC Cavalry. John T. Owen's parents were James E. and Elizabeth Owen, from the Chesterfield and Manchester areas. James E. worked on the railroads. I can't trace this family any farther back and would appreciate any information anyone has on any of them!

Liberty or Death motto used by any soldiers or units in the War

Hello,

I am a docent at Patrick Henry's home "Scotchtown" in Hanover Co., VA.

Currently I am working on a project concerning the house during the Civil War years.

At the moment I am stuck- I have been trying to find an image- I know I have seen before- of a CSA soldier wearing a uniform with the motto "Liberty or Death" stitched on his uniform. So far I have not been able to find this image! I know I have seen!

Do any of you have knowledge of the image I speak of or any other incidents of this motto being used during the Civil War?

I have seen that the N.C. Forsyth Rifles had the motto on their company flag. I've also seen the image of the CSA flag captured at Gettysburg by Custer that bear the words (all of these are of course a help to me), but I am on the hunt to find that one image I am asking your help on!

Thank you in advance for any help or ideas!

Sandy

My ancestor was Alexander Wurt Haydon. I've found Alexander W Haydon enlisted in both Company H, Virginia 19th Infantry on 1 Feb 1863 and Company G, Virginia 51st Infantry on 4 Feb 1863. From other evidence (wife's name on pension record, place of enlistment) it looks like both are the same person. Does anyone know if this is possible?
