Thank you so much for your incredibly informative reply. My researches suggested exactly what you have confirmed, that there was no 92nd prior to the Civil War, but I was not completely sure.
We have suspected for some time that the American connection may have been an exaggeration (or a complete fabrication) and are now, with your assistance, reasonably certain that this is so.
Once again thank you - it will certainly help in our endeavors to identify Samuel Wood.

Re: Samuel Wood, Major 92nd Infantry

What you describe doesn't sound correct for the American military. Prior to the American Civil War, the United States did not have a 92nd Infantry. The peacetime regular standing US Army on the eve of the Civil War had just 15 infantry regiments, bearing unit designations that included the 1st Infantry, 2nd Infantry, 3rd Infantry, etc., on through the 15th Infantry.

Even during the War of 1812 and the Mexican War (1846-48), the highest numerical designation for any US army regiment was the 48th Infantry. As best as I can determine, no state volunteer units during these wars got as high as 92, either. Therefore, I believe your information about the number designation for your wife's ancestor's regiment is mistaken, if indeed her ancestor served in an American military unit.

Additionally, I have a 2-volume set of books that lists all commissioned officers of the regular United States army from 1789 to 1903 ("Historical Register and Dictionary of the US Army", originally printed by the US Government Printing Office in 1903). I checked this reference source for a Samuel Wood and found only one, a man named Winthrop Samuel Wood, but he graduated from West Point in 1885 and thereafter served as a Lieutenant and Captain in assorted cavalry regiments. There also was a John S. Wood who served briefly as a Lieutenant in the 32nd Infantry during the War of 1812 (two months service during the spring & summer of 1813).

Finally, I found a Major Samuel Woods who graduated from West Point in 1833 and served in the Mexican War, but he could not have emigrated to Australia in the 1850s, as he continued his US military career throughout the Civil War and finally retired as a full Colonel in January 1881. Altogether 50 men named Wood and 16 men named Woods held regular US Army commissions prior to 1903 and none of them seem capable of being your fellow.

In the Civil War there were several state volunteer infantry units that used the numeral 92, including one from Ohio. I checked that Ohio regiment's roster and found just one soldier with the surname Wood (Chauncy Wood, a Private). There were also two soldiers in that regiment with the surname Woods, but both of them were enlisted men, as well, and neither was named Samuel.

Finally, I perused the 170 men named Samuel Wood who are carried in Ancestry's American Civil War soldier database, and none were from a regiment with a numeral 92 designation (e.g., 92nd Pennsylvania, 92nd Illinois, etc.).

If your wife's ancestor was in the American military, I suspect he was in a volunteer state unit during the Mexican War (the states raised National Guard units specifically to fight that war, just as they did again in 1861 to fight the Civil War). However, officers in state units were not regularly commissioned US Army officers, and thus their names do not appear in the previously cited 1789-1903 Register.

Of course, your wife's ancestor may have served in the British army. I don't know if that army had a designation for a 92nd Infantry during the first half of the 19th century, but if you want to do some more researching on this fellow's possible military career, I think that's the direction I'd explore next.

My wife's gggfather was Samuel Wood, who married Esther Anne Hammond. They emigrated to Australia in about 1850. Samuel was supposedly a major in the 92nd Infantry - so this is well before the Civil War. Has anyone any ideas where I can follow this up? I have no other details about Samuel or Esther.

I am researching John Duckwall Swaim Company B of the 57th Ohio. We have a copy of a tintype of him and it says he was imprisoned at Vicksburg but my research does not show he was there. Do you have any information on him. He enlisted Oct 8, 1862 from what I have found and was discharged Aug 3, 1863 He then went to the 177th Ohio and after that the 178th Ohio and mustered out June 1865. Please reply to jdroegem@comcast.net
Thanks for any help

He enlisted in the 77th Infantry in Ohio in 1861 I believe. I have the Civil War Pension paper from his wife (then widowed) which shows him in company B of the 77th infantry. He was a private. The page you photographed looks like an "H. Ward" but I have not seen any other rosters with another Ward in that company. It may be that this is an "I" and not an "H". If you have any photos which may contain an image of Isaac Ward I would love to see them!

Thanks!

Richard Ward

J.B. Seely - Co. H 54th Ohio INF - Trying to Confirm

I've hit a bit of a brick wall searching for information about J. B. Seely, Co. H 54th Ohio Infantry, buried in Memphis National Cemetery (Memphis, TN). That service information is listed on his headstone, viewable on Findagrave.com.

I've had difficulty locating any other information, and haven't even been able to confirm those service details. He's not listed in that regiment/company in the NPS' Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System, and I've combed through other Ohio Civil War databases/online records with no luck.

Any help/suggestions would be appreciated. At this point, I'd like to at least be able to confirm his service details, and discover his first name.

Marco - I've never been to NARA (Nat'l Archives & Records Administration). You should check out the NARA website, especially the following 2 pages:

1st -
www.archives.gov/research/start/plan-visit.html

After checking out this page, at the bottom, click:

"Services for Onsite Users"

They do tell you to go on a weekday, and to go early in the day. There is a charge to make or obtain copies of records, but I have no idea what the fees are - not mentioned on the site. You can contact them before you plan a visit - e-mail or phone.
I've no idea how much money you would save, or not save, by traveling down to visit NARA in person.

Good luck, whatever you do.

Kit
Thank you for such a thorough answer. I have a growing list of records I want to get copies of that are housed in Washington D.C.. My assumption is this is where these are located. Do you know if it's possible to research in person to avoid the $75 fee? At this rate it might be cheaper for me to fly out there for a while, if I could avoid the research fees.

Marco in Minneapolis

You can order Daniel Thatcher's military service records from NARA. I would think that these records would likely include his muster roll records.

www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pre-ww-1-...

For Military Service Records application form, download and print out Form NATF 86

Daniel Thatcher, and later his widow, both applied for and received a Civil War Pension (as per his Civil War Pension Index card). You can order his pension records from NARA. Use same url as given above. Download and print out Form NATF 85.

If you're interested in this I suggest you order the complete packet ($75) which can include up to 100 pages, rather than the small, cheaper packet ($25), which would only include a maximum of 8 pages.

In '04 I ordered my Great-great grandfather's pension records. He died in 1863 in La., serving with the 133rd NY Vol. Infantry. I received a ton of information, including his death in an army reg. hospital, his marriage record, the baptismal dates and birth dates for his 3 daughters, and much more information. Not everyone is so lucky, but for me it was well worth the try.

Hope this is of some help. Good genealogical luck.

Kit in New Hampshire

Wendy -

Jonathan R. Wright is listed on the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System site (a Nat. Park Service site) :

www.itd.nps.gov/cwss/index.html

WRIGHT, Jonathan R. 8th Independent Co. Ohio Sharpshooters

Jonathan applied for and received a Civil War pension; and his widow later applied for one(as per his Civil War Pension Index card). You can order the pension records from NARA. I suggest you send for the full records ($75), rather than the cheaper set ($25). The full set would include all records in the file up to 100 pages; while the less expensive set would have a maximum of 8 pgs.

The NARA address is:

www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pre-ww-1-...

Download and print out Form NATF 85

If this is "your" Jonathan, then the file could be rich in information. My great-great grandfather served in the 133rd NY Vol Infantry. I got his pension files and received a treasure trove of information (his death in an Army hospital, his marriage record, the baptism records for his 3 daughters and their birth dates, his widow's remarriage, and much more). Hopefully you'll be lucky and find important pieces of information.

Good luck.

Kit in New Hampshire

Hi,
Oh how lucky you are that you have this medal. They were not "given" to every Ohio soldier, but rather "awarded" to every Ohio soldier. Not every soldier claimed his medal, and that's why they are not everywhere (there should be thousands of them around, since there were thousands of soldiers from Ohio! Ohio never kept a record of who claimed the medals, and they also did not keep those that were not claimed. I'm still looking for my gr-gr-grandfather's medal. Unlike the state of West Virginia, who has kept meticulous records of where every one of their medals went, and still has hundreds in their vault in Charleston that were never claimed by the soldiers. My late husband was able to get his gr-gr-uncle's medal, but only after an extensive application process.
Although you may already have seen it, here is perhaps the best information on the Ohio (and West Virginia) medals: http://www.lindapages.com/ohcwmedals.htm
I've also attached a photo of my husband's claimed medal so you can see a good image of the West Virginia medals, too.
Unfortunately, I don't know of any way to get a replica of you medal, particularly since it was from Ohio, and they kept such poor records that they would have no interest in creating replicas. You may be able to get a ribbon similar to the original from a civil war re-enactment sutler or company that deals with Civil War replicas or maybe on ebay. Good luck!

Thank you for your reply.

My relative, Henry Bayerline (sometimes Burline in Civil War docs), later settled in Toledo (Lucas County). So I can see this being the case (NW Ohio). He married a woman who was born just over the border in the South Bend, IN area (St. Joseph County). So all this makes sense, I just can't find any pre-Civil war records that seem to support who he lived with (parents) prior or where/when he came to America.

Do you have or have you seen any type of photos from that company?
I have some information on my relative Henry Bayerline (various other spellings including Burline, Beerline, Beirline, etc). I found a pension record for his wife on Ancestry.com's Civil War Pension Index. That led me to his regiment and company. I then searched the Google Book - Official Roster of the Soliders of the State of Ohio in the War of the Rebellion (http://books.google.com/books?id=X7IKAAAAIAAJ&pg=PP1#v=o...) to find his entry as a Wagoneer and serving 3 years from Aug 17, 1861 to Sept 13, 1864 when he mustered out.

Does anyone have any more information or places to go (pension has some application and certificate, does that lead anywhere)?

I would love to find a photo of the company (38th OVI, Company F). Ideas?

I also would like to find his parents or where he lived when he entered or left the service. He is the last person in that branch of my tree and this is the best lead I have. I only know about his life 20 years later (late 70's to his death) and he was born in Germany. Ideas?

Any help is appreciated.
Hello Shirley,
My photograph is a Reunion Photograph of the 63rd OVI. I don't have a photo of the regiment when they were all young pups. This picture is taken in Chauncey, Ohio. I'm not sure if you are still interested. Thanks Keith

I just read a post that was last edited in Jan. 2005 in which you indicated having a photo of the 63rd Ohio regiment. My great great grandfather, William Johnson was a member of that regiment and I would sincerely appreciate receiving a scan of the original photograph. This would be a real treasure.
Shirley Yurkewich

My husband and I are in possession of a Civil War Photo Album that belonged to Edward F. Kitts (my husbands ancestor). It is a collection of photographs of men that served with him in the 77th Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company B. I am working on putting together a PDF of the pages of the album. I photographed them each individually and keep the album away from light and humidity for safe keeping. (In fact, photographing the pages was the first time I've ever opened it up and looked at all of the pages. I never did this in the past for fear that I would hurt it!) I would love to share this with others who have relatives with photographs within the book.

I am attaching to this post the "table of contents" page which lists all of the men who have photographs within the book, as well as their rank within the regiment.

If your family member is listed and you would be interested in a copy of their photograph, please let me know!

Also, if you are able to decipher some of the names and list them here that is great - so far this is what I am able to read:

Henry L. Pugh? - Corporal
William M. Atkinson? - 1st Lieutenant?
John Smith - 2nd Lieutenant?
J. P. Dougherty - Orderly Sergeant?
E. F. (Edward F.) Kitts - Corporal
C. Barnes - Corporal
G. W. Delaney - Private
G. Price - Corporal
H. Ward - Private
J. Osborn - Private
D. Wilson - Private
William L. Barnes - Private
William? Hearder? - Private
J. Jackson - Private
J. B. Sinclair - Private

Happy Hunting! :)

The pension information came from the Alphabetical Pension Index Cards on Ancestry.com and the Organizational Index Cards on fold3.com. I do not have any information on them beyond that.

The alphabetical card clearly lists the widow of the Samuel Culbertson who served in the 170th OVI as Elizabeth T. Culbertson but the date she filed for a pension is not clear - perhaps 9 Feb 1892 or 1893 or ???

Getting a copy of the pension case file from NARA may answer some questions for you.

PS: There was also a James H. Culbertson who served in H 170 OVI and received a pension for that service.

Thanks for the info. I'm curious with the mention of "Elizabeth" applying for pension. We have Samuel's wife as Catherine Elisabeth Culbertson, later Fourman. I wonder if this is really Samuel's wife or another Culbertson. The dates seem to back it up since Samuel died 1889 and Catherine remarried in 1891.

Thanks

Samuel H. Culbertson filed for a pension in Ohio on 18 Jul 1890 (Application #861096, Certificate #595613) for service in Co H, 170th OVI.
Elizabeth T. Culbertson filed for a widow’s pension in Ohio on 9 Feb? 1893 [month difficult to read]
