I am seeking the burial place of Hiram H. Roberts, private in Co. H, 28th Maine Regiment. His brother Lewis also a private in the same company, attended to him until his death in Bellefontaine, Ohio on 20 Aug 1863. There is no mention whether Hiram was buried in Ohio or brought back to Maine. If anyone comes across information concerning this or can give me a good search location, please contact me. Thank You.

His widow also applied for, and received a pension.

You can order his pension records from the NARA. The complete packet, for $75, will include all records, up to 100 pages.
Frank Brown of Co. H Maine 19th Vol.Infantry, applied for, and received a civil war pension (according to his civil war pension card). You probably could get a lot of information from his pension records (though probably not his burial place).

You can order his pension records from the NARA. The complete packet costs $75, and I suggest you order that. It would contain all records in his pension file, up to 100 pages. The cheaper small packet would only contain 6-8 pgs. at most, and you could miss out on some important information.

To order go to:

www.archives.gov/veterans/military-service-records/pre-ww-1-...

You can then download and print out Form NATF 85.

- In '04 I ordered the records of my gggrandfather Pvt. John LEWIS, of the 133rd NY Vol Infantry. I received a ton of information, the proverbial "Mother Lode" (not everyone is so lucky). It included his death record from the army reg. hospital in La. in 1863, his marriage record, his 3 daughters' birth dates and baptismal information and much much more. I was able to get important information about the family that I wouldn't have gotten anywhere else.

Again, not everyone's so lucky, but it's usually well worth the try. I ordered the records of the ancestor of 2 of my friends, and they also received tons of information and were thrilled. According to the pension card there was no application for a pension from Frank's widow, so either she died first, or never applied (I'm assuming he was married and a direct ancestor of yours; maybe I'm wrong).

Good luck, whatever you decide to do.

I am a decendant of Franklin (Frank) Atherton Clark and we have been looking to finding what we can. One thing that might interest you is that there were 4 Clark brothers from Sangerville in the Civil War. Charles Amory Clark was in the 6th Maine Infantry, and received the Medal of Honor for his service.

The link where we found that was actually about the sale of a "camp box, belonging to 1st Lt. Franklin "Frank" Atherton Clark, Company E, 1st Maine Heavy Artillery." It was sold to someone - the site records the value of things. But it also includes the information about Charles A., and other information. The link is: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/identified-officers-ca...

As to documents, we also found a link with some very badly scanned information from a book publihed in 1890. Most of the errors in it are from bad character recognition in the scan, and isn't too hard to clean up. The link for it is: http://www.ebooksread.com/authors-eng/lake-city-publishing-c...

I don't know the focus of your interest, but if you have additional information about the Clark family, we'd be interested.

Thanks very much.

there are far more then two Charles in the family line and other branches too ;) technically his father was Charles too. The family is all in Liberty- not Freedom.

The family bible states he died in 1863 Nov 14 in New Orleans.

I did look at the Charles I listing because Ancestry seems to show the same info for Charles E from Liberty. I went on footnote and looked at the physical pages and it shows he resigned due to health issues in Beaufort SC. But those seem clear to be Charles I...although the last one shows Feb of 1863 as a date so he could have headed to New Orleans since his brother was there.

I would love to see any info you have on William...he died in New Orleans from his wounds received at Port Hudson, LA.- 28 June 1863. infor given to me is he has a marker at Chalmette Natl Cem and record shows buried in Hunt Cem in Liberty, Waldo, ME.

I am hoping someone will do a lookup at that cem to see if Charles is there and any info on his grave...

Thanks
Laurie
njlad1 at gmail dot com

Perhaps there is a mix-up. There WERE two men named "Charles Davis" and both served in the Union army.

Charles E. Davis (enlisted from Freedom) served in Company A of the Maine 20th Infantry; he was discharged (as disabled) on 26 Jan 1863. According to his enlistment information, he was 18 years old--which would make his DOB circa 1844, He probably is the Charles E. Davis (born c. 1845) who appears in Freedom in the household of Daniel Davis.

Charles I. Davis (enlisted from Liberty) served in Co. H of the Maine 8th Infantry; US Colored Troops 33rd Infantry, Co. F of the 39th Illinois Infantry and--finally--the Veteran Reserve Corps. According to his enlistment information, he was 23 years old on 7 Sep 1861 which would make his DOB circa 1838. He probably is the Charles Davis (born c. 1836) who appears in Liberty in the household of Elbrige Davis. He applied for an invalid pension in 1889 (filing from Maine); his widow applied for a Widow's pension in 1920. He was in Liberty at the time of the 1890 Vets Schedule and appears in census records there until 1920.

Neither man is likely to have been in New Orleans in the course of duty based on the location of their regiments although it is possible for the younger man (the one from Freedom) to have gone there after his discharge.

Incidentally, there were TWO William Davises from Freedom, as well--but it is likely that they are the same man. William Davis enlisted in 1861 in Co. F of the Maine 4th Infantry and was discharged less than a month later with consumption. William C. Davis enlisted in October of 1862 in Company B of the Maine 26th Infantry. He was hospitalized in New Orleans in April of 1863.

recently given info (THANK YOU)that William C Davis of the 26th Maine Co B died in the morning of 28th June 1863 of wounds received at the battle of Port Hudson, LA. A Marker in Chalmette Nat'l Cemetery, Chalmette, Louisiana.

Charles Elbridge (or just Elbridge) apparently died 14 Nov 1863 "at 6 o'clock in the evening" also in New Orleans. If this is true then he would not have been in the 20th Maine... but I sure would like to know if this notation in a family bible is true or not.

Thanks

it seems in lots of his various records he is listed as Elbridge (marriage, census and the like) but I cannot find any record of him after the war. The same with his brother William - found their enlistment info but not a thing further. A tree here on ancestry had them both dead in 1863 in New Orleans which I think may only be true for William.

I believe there is another Charles in Freedom...I saw that record in a 1860 census and my Charles in Liberty. I did find his enlistment from Liberty...but that is all I could find. And trust me I spent HOURS looking and reading may online posts> At least I have found the 2 regiments files roll and page numbers on microfilm from the nation archives. I just though someone else may have easy access.....I am a Yankee through and through but living in South Florida. Thanks...

Laurie- In preparation for an event with a local (Winslow, ME) genealogy group, I've been running up Civil War rosters for towns where we have members. I didn't recognize the name "Charles Elbridge Davis from Liberty--but I found him enlisting from the neighboring town of Freedom. He was discharged as disabled on 26 January 1863 (several months before Gettysburg)--reason not given; it is more likely to have been disease than war casualty. If he was disabled, it is possible that he filed for an invalid pension; if you know that he was alive in 1890, you can check the 1890 schedule. His Civil War name was "Charles E. Davis". In order to "flesh out" the brothers, why not check for a local historical society--or even the local library. The Davis family of central Maine is significant so why not check for publications, on-line bulletin boards, etc.?

Hello Bryce,

Just came across your inquiry concerning the death of Francis W Sabine. He is my great, great uncle. We have a copy of a letter he wrote requesting to be sent to the front as he didn't feel he was doing enough by staying in Portland on recruiting duty. His request was granted and he was sent off to Virginia. He was shot in the head by a confederate sharpshooter and died at Fort Monroe. Hope this is helpful for you.

Janet I Hayes
Gunsight Antiques

Re: James FOX in Iowa - Maine

Hello. I'd just like to offer an FYI.

The 1820 census has 19 FOX people (Heads) in Maine, in 5 different counties. The only James FOX that year is in York Co., ME.

In 1860 there are almost 80 FOX people in Maine, in many different counties.

Oh, here is a hint. In 1860 there is a James FOX, 14, in Whitefield, ME (Lincoln Co.). He seems to be living with a farming couple, WELCH, who had a daughter, Augusta, 16.

There is also a Catherine FOX, 18, living with a family in another town in Lincoln Co.

Most of the FOX people in 1860 are in Oxford Co., Hancock Co., and Cumberland Co. About the same in 1870, with more in Kennebec Co.

Hope this helps.

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. In both Rev. War and Civil War there were boys, 14, who fought. (My ancestor's brother in NH in 1770's was reportedly 14.)

James Fox Iowa - Maine

The 14th Iowa Infantry, Company G, lists this man in their roster:

Fox, James. Age 17. Residence Toledo, (Tama County, Iowa) nativity Maine. Enlisted October 9, 1861, as Drummer. Mustered November 2, 1861. Missing in action April 6, 1862, Shiloh Tennessee. Mustered out November 16, 1864, Davenport, Iowa.

James Fox was 5 foot 2 with dark hair, eyes and complexion. He may have been younger than 17 when he enlisted as one of his companions described him as hardly bigger than the average 12 year old boy.

James Fox fought at the siege of Fort Donelson and later was one of the brave defenders of the Hornets' Nest of Shiloh, where he was taken prisoner with his regiment after holding the rebel offensive off for several hours. They were finally surrounded and forced to surrender when their ammunition had all but run out, but the delay bought general grant the time needed to reinforce and reorganize his army and win the following day. Fox was taken to a POW camp in Georgia. Despite his small stature he survived both battles and the prison camp.

After he was exchanged he worked as a harness maker and saddler at the post quartmaster's department. He remained with the regiment until mustered out in November 1864.

No records of this soldier have been found before or after the War. His roster record says he was born in Maine. One of his companions kept a diary that mentions him a few times, giving interesting details of his service and his time as a POW. The diary has been reprinted this past month by the Traer, Iowa museum (www.traermuseum.com).

Does anyone recognize this soldier? If so, please contact cwtraer at hotmail.com

Yes it’ possible and it won’t have to been criminal either I just did some research on privates and found a hole company was put in a prison camp for disorderly conduct, of course they won’t held with the normal prisoners but they were under lock and key non the less, so yes it’s possible.

If we had a name maybe some one out there can help you?

Dennis Segelquist
Civilian & Military Surname Searcher
http://www.civilwarthosesurnames.blogspot.com
I have a copy of a service record for someone who was in the 12th Regiment, Company H. It indicates he was confined to Hart's Island. He was released, and given an Honorable Discharge and pension.

This confuses me. Were Union soldiers confined there as well? Nothing in my leads me to believe this is the case. If he (and apparently 20 others of the same regiment) did something of a criminal nature that would have them confined by their own side, why would they be released with an Honorable Discharge?

Anyone have any info that can help me? Anyone know of a roster of prosoners held at Hart's Island?

As you will see from my post earlier on this board, many soldiers did not return to their state of origin. Many spent time convalescing at veteran's homes. Others stayed where they were mustered out. One of mine was a farmer and lumberman and after the war he was too ill to work so they lived near his wife's parents. Sometimes there were no jobs to return to so they set out with other soldiers to find new places to farm. Lots of things to think about.

Regards,
Sharyn

Hi Sharon. As I read this, I thought of my gr-gr-grandfather, Joseph KIDDER, in Princeton, ME. He was reportedly seriously injured while fighting in -- Florida ! And, he eventually returned to Princeton !

I'm told he eventually became the "sexton" of a church in Princeton, and was nicknamed, "Joe, the sexton."

He didn't marry his cousin, Clarissa "Clara" WILKINS, until after he returned, so their 6 children were born in the 1870's and 1880's. And, I'm wondering if they were a very poor family ! I don't imagine a church sexton was paid very much money ! And, Clarissa died young !

My gr-grandfather, "Sanford," left home at Age 15 when his mother died, and became a logger on the coast ! So, our guess is that the oldest daughter, Julia, became the substitute mother for her younger siblings !

... But, reading what you said reminded me of a question ! What if "Joe" KIDDER had not survived his fighting at "Fort Fernandina" in FL ? Would he have been buried - right there ?

(And, I guess I would not be sitting here typing this - if he didn't !)

Betty (near Lowell, MA)

P.S. If, in the 1860's, someone was given a choice of remaining in FL after the War, or returning to a very small town in very northern Maine, I would imagine some would have chosen Florida !

Hello again,

Thank you very much for this information. It could be the
answer as to where the family split up to after their upbringing
in Maine.

Do you...or do you know where I might find further information
on these people you detailed for me? Such as their ages
when they entered the service or more importantly to me,
their places of birth and the town they were living in when
they joined up?

Johnny,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to my posting.
I will keep your information on file while I try and confirm if he
is one of my relatives. As yet, still unknown.

I did manage to find only the listing (no details such as you
provided) for a James McLennan, who signed up with the
9th regiment, Vermont Infantry. Do you happen to have any detailed information for him?

I also found a George McLennan, who served in the 2nd
regiment, New York Infantry, if you again have any details
on him as well.
The reason I am looking at these two men, is that I don't think
any of grandfather's brothers had middle names, as the
family did not believe in the necessity of having them.

I look forward to hearing from you.
