My 3rd great grandfather, Lemuel Jewell Edwards, was born in 1848 in Oglethorpe County, GA. According to his daughter's application to the United Daughters of the Confederacy, Lemuel J. Edwards enlisted September 21, 1864 in "Company C, Cook's Battalion, Mell's Regiment. At the time of surrender he was in North Carolina transporting Union prisoners. He participated in three battles."

I've done some digging, and I believe my 2nd great grandmother, Rebecca Edwards Earle, was referring to General Philip Cook and Colonel Patrick Mell. This leads me to believe that Lemuel J. Edwards may have been in the 9th GA Infantry, or the 38th GA Infantry. However, I've been unable to find his name on any rosters.

Coincidentally, I just discovered Lemuel J. Edwards was the nephew of James Jewell, the subject of a book, Dear Sallie, by Gary Doster, that came out several years ago. He fought in the Echols Light Artillery unit and never made it back home.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I understood that Samuel Joseph Parish was wounded at Chickamauga but was brought to Cain's Gwinnett County where he died of his wounds. I have seen info where he is suppose to be buried at Sardis Methodist Church Cemetery, but can find no listing for him there or for his wife Margaret. He was my GG grandfather. His daughter Martha Ann Parish was my great grandmother. I also have little info on Dorsey's 4th Georgia Calvary. I will be glad to share anything I have on Martha's families as she married twice. I come from her first marriage to Jonathon Masterson. I am in Georgia right now and am going to Gwinnett County Monday to see what I can find. I can only be here 2 or 3 days and must head home to Oklahoma. All of Martha's records have her last name as Parish.

Captured Records confusing: Captured at Vicksburg AND near Marietta???

George W. Price was a member of the 36th B "Boyles" Infantry of Georgia. I have both the union and confederate records.

Confederate records show captured at Vicksburg 4 July 1863. There is a "capitulation" document from Vicksburg from 9 July 1863. Then, the next record shows he was captured near Marietta, GA 3 July 1864 and sent to Ft. Douglas (Chicago) on 17 July. A few days before the war was over, George signed up for the Union Infantry.

Union records have him captured just one the time 3 July 1864.

Question One: Does this mean that when he was at Vicksburg he just had to sign the capitulation document and then was let go to be captured again the following year?

Question Two: Were all "arrest on sight" warrants let go after the war was over? When George told the yanks he never wanted to be a confederate soldier, signed up with them, the confederates put out an arrest warrant for him. After serving about 2 years of his Union service, he went AWOL from the Denver area and the Union army put out an arrest warrant on him. Later, he signed an allegiance book in Georgia where he states he was "born in New Jersey." Would he have been afraid of the two arrest warrants?

***John (W) Parris (Sr)
Birth: 1780
Rockingham County
North Carolina, USA
Death: 1852
Spartanburg County
South Carolina, USA

This is an UNDOCUMENTED burial, as no tombstone has been found. There are two fieldstones next to and in the same row with his eldest son William and his wife Mary and her mother Dorcus Ezell. These stones may be the markers for John and his wife Jemima.

He was the son of Samuel and Rachel (Dickerson) Parris. His full given name may have been John Wiley. He grew up in Rockingham County, North Carolina, next door to the Iron Works.

He was married about 1799 to Jemima Turner, daughter of William Turner. They first appear in Spartanburg County on the 1800 census, with one daughter under five. The first deed for him was dated 17 Jan.1801. He later sold this land on Long Island Creek to Robert Scruggs and bought 227 acres on Suck Creek of Broad River. This land was very near the Iron Works and litterly where the Cowpens Battleground monuments and the Scruggs cabin are today.(picture at right)

During the War of 1812 he served in the Regular South Carolina Militia. He was stationed at a camp near Georgetown, SC. He was discharges March 16,1815 and was paid $38.95 for his service of four months and twenty seven days.

By 1820 this family was living across the state line in Polk County, NC and by 1830 they were in Buncombe County, NC. John got a land grant there and he bought land (from the James Black estate) that joined it on the side of "the little mountian". He sold this land in 1840 and returned to Spartanburg County, South Carolina.

The 1850 census finds John & Jemima in the home of their son, John S. Parris. John was dead by Oct. of 1852.

Click on map at right for Cowpens Battlefield, Buck Creek Church, Parris Post Office, Cantrell's Mill and Ezell Post office.

Family links:
Parents:
Samuel Parris (1730 - 1791)
Rachel Dickerson Parris (1740 - ____)

Spouse:
Jemima Turner Parris (1780 - 1855)*

Children:
William M Parris (1802 - 1883)*
Mary Parris Melton (1805 - ____)*
John S.
My ancestor, Charles Bishop Hunt, filled out a loyalty oath on August 7, 1867, in Athens, Georgia. Later, it was written over and on the side it says, "aided and harbored Rebel Flournoy". He was written down as being excluded on the voting list of August, 1867. What happened? How did this school teacher in his 50s get in trouble after the war? How can I find out?

3rd Battalion Georgia Volunteer Infantry

Hello, I am looking for information on the 3rd Battalion Georgia Infantry. They were organized in June 1861 at the Upson Campground near The Rock Georgia. It was formed with three companies, later increased to five. In May 1863 the unit was broken up. Company D, 3rd Battalion Ga. Infantry became Co. B, 4th Battalion Ga Sharpshooters and Company G, 3rd Battalion Ga Infantry became Company A, 4th Battalion Georgia Sharpshooters. Companies B, C, E, F, and H were consolidated with the 9th(also known as 17th) Battalion Georgia Volunteer Infantry to form the 37th Georgia Volunteer Infantry.

I have been unable to find out anything about this units chain of command. I have been told that they were members of Gen. Kirby Smith's Army during his Invasion of Kentucky. They certainly appear to have been active in Kentucky either in Smith's or Bragg's army. I had an uncle in Co. D of this Battalion and my direct ancestor later joined Co. B, 4th Batt'n Ga Sharpshooters (which was the same company)

The Battalion appears to have been commanded by Lt. Col. Anthony F. Rudler and Lt. Col. Marcellus A. Stovall but that is all I have. I would love to learn more about their chain of command and what battles they participated in.

Any help would be appreciated.

Debbie, I am responding to an ancient note regarding Joseph Warren Brown and his family. I never saw your note until tonight. I was very new to Ancestry when I first posted and unfamiliar with it in general. I work more than full time, and although still very interested in this hobby, fell off of Ancestry for several years. Lately been dabbling in it again. I've learned a little more about Joseph Warren Brown and would be happy to share. Also, interested in what you can share. I noticed somewhere in the post it showed a very old email address for me. New email is cindy@cnamedical.com.

I have a brochure about the Key Methodist Church in Adrian, GA. From what I remember the Kea name was once spelled Key. This small church brochure tells some things about the key family history which I believe was Warren Key. My great grandfather was John Wesley Kea, my grandmothers father. I could send you a copy of you would like me to, it may help out with some of your family history as well. I believe it also tells about they Key family name came about because the family crest meant "the keeper of the keys" I don't have the article in front of me but I could send it to you. It also mention the Kea (Key) family was related to the famous Francis Scott Key.

Missing Service Records?

Hello everyone.

I have two different members of my family who were the right age to have served in the civil war yet I can find no records of their service. In one of the cases, there is actually a story that has been passed down about the man serving yet I can find no record.

On my fathers side, My Confederate Ancestors older brother James Pyron Harris. He lived in Pike County, Georgia and appears in the 1860 Pike Co. Ga Census listed as James P. Harris aged 29 with his wife Martha E. Harris (Nee Smith) aged 18 and two children. Susan E. Harris aged 1 and William M. Harris aged 1 month. This couple also had another daughter named Sarah Melissie Harris who was born on May 4, 1863. In 1870 both James Pyron Harris and his wife Martha E Smith Harris are evidently deceased. All three of their children are living are living in the household of John Smith...Martha E. Smith's father.

In 1880, the son William M. Harris is still living with his Smith Grandparents however, the two daughters are now living with their Grandmother Harris "Susan Pyron Harris".

I know that James Pyron Harris was alive on January 13, 1862 for on that date, James P. Harris along with Susan Harris and John Smith are named the legal guardians of James P. Harris's younger siblings Susan Frances, Henry Clay, and William Taylor Harris orphans of Benjamin Harris deceased.

Also if consider that the youngest child Sarah Melissie Harris was born on May 4, 1863 and we assume that her mother carried her for 9 months, that means that both James P. Harirs and Martha E. Smith had to be living in August of 1862. I have checked the local Pike and Surrounding counties muster rolls. There was a Corporal James Harris in Company H, 44rth Georgia Infantry, this company was from Pike County. We have proven that this is not our James Pyron Harris however. This James Harris survived the war and moved to Texas where he is buried with a Military marker. The only other service record I have found that could possibly be James Pyron Harris is 2nd Lt. James P. Harris of Company C, 34th Georgia Infantry. Most of the company appears to have come from Coweta and Troup Counties Georgia which do not border Pike but are not that far away either. The muster rolls states about Lt. Harris - Harris, James P. Elected 2d Lieutenant of Co. K, 4th Regiment Ga. State
Troops October 25, 1861. Mustered out April 1862. Elected 1st
Lieutenant of Co. C, 34th Regiment Ga. Inf. May 13, 1862. Died at home
June 30,1862.

Now obviously we have a problem with persons death date and birth of his youngest daughter. He died 11 months before she was born. I also find it hard to believe that he would have been assigned as guardian of his younger siblings if he was already a member of a military regiment.

I have checked the 1864 Georgia "John Brown" Census and he is not listed in it. There also doesn't appear to be an estate sale or inventory on file in the Pike County Courthouse for either James Pyron Harris or his wife when they died. So I am at a loss as to what happened to my uncle James Pyron Harris.

The other person is my direct ancestor Richard Lanier.

Richard was born in 1830 in Bulloch County Georgia. In the 1860 Census in Emanuel County Georgia aged 30. Richard Survived the war, he appears in the 1870 Emanuel County Ga Census. He lived into the 1900's and is buried at Rosemary Baptist Church in modern day Candler County Georgia. There is where there is a family story. The Story goes that Richard was off fighting in the War and some of General Sherman's troops came through during Shermans march to the sea. They stopped at this house and started talking all the meet out of the smoke House. Richard and his wife Mary Jones Lanier had a daughter who was mentally handicapped. According to the story, My GG Grandmother Mary Jones Lanier went outside and stood up to Sherman's solders. She told them that her daughter was not right and that was all the food they had and she wasn't going to let them take food for that poor child's mouth, that they would have to kill her. According to the story, her bluff worked. The troops didn't take all the food and left them enough to live.

However, again I have found no service record for Richard. He nor wife filed for a pension either. Richard is also not listed in the 1864 Georgia Census.

Any ideas on how I can proceed?

This is to report that we have found the death and interim burial location of John E. Yates Compay K, 38th Indiana Volunteers. His full story as we can determine it is very interesting and is available here: http://alturl.com/87biw

Ron Yates
GG Grandson

I am aware that there was another James Roach of a similar age to my James B. Roach. That James Roach was living in Cherokee County, my James B. Roach was living in Forsyth County. I'm sure they were related in some way, but I haven't found the relationship, yet.

I am pretty certain that the James B. Roach listed in the 46th Regiment, Co. D was my great-grandfather. I sent for his military records and they included an application for widow's benefits from his widow Mary Roach, which was the name of my great-grandmother. And, if I remember correctly, her letter included other family names. I don't have the letter in front of me right now.

In 1860, yes, the name was transcribed as James Brock, but it was definitely my great-grandfather...all the given names are the same as in my great-grandfather's family.

It is late at night right now, so I can't study the details of your message tonight. I'll try again in the next couple of days.

I wanted to point out something in case this leads anywhere. There are 2 James B. Roach apparently at same time in similar areas of Ga. There does appear to be some relationship between the 2 and I'm thinking they may be cousins. The one you are listing here may very well be what appears to be a brother to Jonathan Roach son of Joel & Polly Roach. Reason I believe this is that Jonathan and his son Joseph were both soldiers in Alabama Infantry out of AL and Miss., Jonathan was a soldier pretty much most of his life it seems. Jonathan is found living next to a James B. Roach and their ages are about 1 year apart. I have definitely connected the families in round about ways # 1 is that your James dad's sister Mary was married to a martin Cornwall who apparently is son of Micajah Cornwell and Lydia McEntire. Joel has a McIntyre living in his home I think in 1860 census (can't remember what county off top of head also there is a Rodger's listed in Joel's household at same time and I just saw another site that had your James B. Roach near several Rodger's & Rogers families in 1860 Forsyth. That James B. Roach was apparently transcribed as James B. Brock according to this persons site, all names in families were same as James B. Roach and the person knew definitely that Jambes B. Roach lived there in 1860. A Joy Clark found the error and transcribed the pages again apparently she is now deceased according to the web page. I believe that Joel is the older brother of James or a twin or 1 year younger and does not show up in anybody's lists or a very close cousin. Only thing we seem to have on Joel is that his father was supposedly a John Roach. Another similarity I found is that Jonathan son of Joel, named his first son Joseph "Sylvester" and I noticed somewhere that there is a Thomas "Sylvester" Roach associated with John Roach and Elizabeth Shearer's children's children.
