I hope you can help!? I knew my 4th great grandfather Charles Newsom ( born 1827 South Carolina) died in 1863 because of one of his daughters mentions in her husbands pension records. I've been thinking Gettysburg?? He was living in Dale Co. Alabama, but didn't find him in any Alabama military records (one Charles Newsom in the Alabama 4th, nothing much about him.) some how I stubble upon him serving with his brother James Newsom in the 31st Georgia. If you have any further information on them Id appreciate it. Or at least let me know if there is anything on them in the book so I can order it.

Thank you,

sandy

My great great grandfather, James G. Patterson served in Company E of the 31st Regiment of the Georgia Infantry, CSA. He survived the war, surrendering at Appomattox, but I am told that he lost an eye during the war. I will be contacting the publisher to purchase your book as I am very interested in obtaining as much information as I can about my great great grandfather, his Regiment, and their war service. Most of the information I have about my great great grandfather is by word of mouth, without any source documentation except for brief information from the muster role and the National Park Service Civil War Soldier and Sailors System. James G. Patterson entered the service as a Private and ranked out as a Sergeant. I am told by a distant cousin that he fought in almost every major battle, and he indicated that the Wilderness was the most difficult. Unfortunately, I don't have any diary or written accounts to substantiate this. He was a farmer from Stweart Georgia, and moved to Alabama some time after the war (he is listed in the 1880 census from Pike, Alabama). Any information that can be shared about James G. Patterson or our family will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Wayne

 Greg,
I am not sure whether this is the same unit you have researched, but I have been trying to find the unit my g-grandfather was in. In 1863 he was a 15-year-old living near Palmetto, GA. In 1937 he gave an interview to the Abilene, TX paper in which he gave this information: "In the latter part of 1863 I enlisted in Company 'A', First Confederate Battalion......(in late May, 1864) we were ordered to Virginia to join our battalion which was on the front near Mechanicsville, VA. We arrived in Richmond June 1, 1864 and were sent directly to Cold Harbor....
Does this connect with the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry, or do I keep looking? Thank you.
Charlene Miller

Charlene,

I checked the "Soldiers and Sailors" site the National Park Service offers, and could not find a candidate. He might have served in a unit whose service records were lost or destroyed. Assuming he died in Texas, did he apply for a pension from that state? Did his widow apply for a pension? For a man reminiscing about his war service in the 1930s, they tend to confuse the facts regarding the unit they served in. The "Ist Confederate Battalion" might actually be the 12th Georgia Battalion or something similar. I've seen veteran reminiscences where they insist they were wounded at Gettysburg, but the facts reveal he meant "Sharpsburg" or "Petersburg".

Another potential source are 442 reels of microfilm referred to as the "Unfiled Slips", service records that did not end up with the "Compiled Service Records" the National Archives offers. It is a separate collection from the "Compiled Service Records". The NA should have it. I know Wallace State College in Hanceville, AL has this collection in their wonderful holdings. It is arranged alphabetically.

I am the author of "A History of the 31st Georgia Volunteer Infantry", published in 1997 by Butternut And Blue, of Baltimore, Maryland.

The 31st Georgia belonged to the Lawton-Gordon-Evans brigade, which was part of the Second Corps, Army of Northern Virginia. This command saw action at Cold Harbor, Brawner's Farm, Harpers Ferry, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Marye's Heights, Gettysburg, Mine Run, Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Ft. Stevens (DC), Monocacy, Winchester, Cedar Creek, Hatcher's Run, Fort Stedman, and Appomattox Court House, among other notable battles and engagements.

It is my hope, through this forum, that I can come into contact with others interested in the 31st Georgia. Though my book is in publication, I'm always looking for additional material pertaining to this regiment and the brave men and boys that served in it.

If you are interested in obtaining a copy of my book, please contact the publisher:

Butternut & Blue
3411 Northwind Road
Baltimore, MD 21234
410-256-9220
http://www.dealersweb.com/Butanv.htm

I can be contacted at:

Gregory C.
