Mazzard Prairie Battlefield is being established as a civil war site park. It is located behind the Hiram Walker Brewing Company in Fort Smith. The sign is in the Millenium Housing Development. Right now it is just a bunch of weeds. Nothing has been done. The original historical marker is off Highway 71, 3 or 4 miles south of Fort Smith on Highway 45. An amateur historian Steven Cox is responsible for moving the designated area northeast a few miles. I am investigating the name now for a school history. All of the old records have Mazzard. There were two schools on the Prairie -- Mazzard to the east and Massard (later Maness) to the west. In the article on Steven Cox (Southwest Times Record, January 9, 2000, p.1) He said he had done extensive research and thought the name was spelled Massard, but the sign to the "park" says Mazzard. Let me know if you find anything.
