Methuria,

According to this National Park Service website:
http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/search-regiments-detail.htm?regi...

The 4th Regiment, Minnesota Infantry was in the advance on and siege of Corinth, Miss., May 18-30. Pursuit to Booneville May 31-June 12. Duty at Clear Creek till August. Expedition to Rienzi and Ripley June. Moved to Jacinto August 5, and duty there till September 18. March to Iuka, Miss., September 18-19.

So it looks like Camp Clear Springs was around Jacinto. But you have to realize that the men could have just made up the name as something they liked and that it has nothing to do with any permanent location in Mississippi.

Good luck with your research!

Ralph Poore
Boise, Idaho
Author of Poore Boys In Gray (http://amzn.to/HJkVOk)
Twitter: @ralphpoore

it could be Clear Creek I guess, I was looking at a list on ancestry.com and that's where I got the info showing his name, regiment, date of death and Camp Clear Springs, but perhaps that just meant the camp at Clear Creek. Thanks for your help. I also checked the burial list but didn't see anything similiar to Mathias' name, oh well, you're probably right about him not being identified.

Thanks anyway.
Are you sure about it being Clear Springs. There was a Clear Creek Union camp just south of Corinth, MS. According to http://www.civilwarindex.com/armymn/4th_mn_infantry.html the 4th Minnesota was in the area at the time. There were some burials at the camp but they were disinterred and moved to the National Cemetery in Corinth. There is a listing of the burials at http://www.interment.net/data/us/ms/alcorn/corinthnat/index.... but I didn't see a Schindler. He could have been among the unknowns.

My Great Grandfather, Arthur Burbick enlisted in the 104th Ohio Volunteer Regiment. He was recruited into the MMB from a hospital in Louisville, KY. That was a common technique for recruitment. War weary soldiers were promised that they wouldn't have to march very far, would have a boat to sleep on, and meals cooked onboard. The purpose of the unit was to combat Confederate Guerrilla Units that were operating up and down the Mississippi River. The boats, mostly converted Steam Ships, would pull up on the bank and quickly drop Infantry, Calvary, and Artillery Units.

Shawn, my gggrandfather was in Gartley's Rangers. As I understand it. Gartley formed and equiped a company ot Confederate Troops. Confederate troops elected their officers and they voted for someone else rather than Gartley so he decided not to participate. But they retained his name. Do not know early history. My ancestor was in another battalion at beginning of war, because of sickness he was sent home but jointed Gartley's. They did sentry duty along the Yazoo River. Main claim to fame was they occupied Haynes Bluff, North of Vicksburg, when Sherman tried to force his way up the road toward Yazoo City. He met such a withering fire that he turned around and went back. I think some of those guys were related. What was your ancestor's name. Regards, Jim Screws

You don't say if the pension is a Confederate or Union one or if you have copies of the pension.

Both pension files usually have more info on the soldier. Union files can have a number of documents including letters and other supporting documents that may help answer your questions.

You can obtain Confederate pensions from the Mississippi Department of Archives and History (http://mdah.state.ms.us/arrec/faq.php). Union pensions are available from the National Archives.

Have you checked the 1910 census for your ancestor? It asks if the person is a Civil War veteran and usually indicates which side.

Have you searched the Soldiers and Sailors database (http://www.nps.gov/civilwar/soldiers-and-sailors-database.ht...)?
Ross, Nash, Murrell, Lazarus - Adams Co, MS & Highland Co., Ohio

Lucretia Lazarus,
born approx 1816, in Adams Co. MS.,
She was daughter of William Lazarus, b.1788,S.C., and Mary Polly (Martin) Boots (1790-1850)....

Lucretia first married, Dec. 24, 1834 to Charles S. Murrell, in Adams Co. MS - they had one child, F. Murrell, b. 1836.

She married second, Sept. 29, 1838 to Jesse Nash, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana - they had one child, W. J. Nash, born 1844 (W.J. = William Jesse perhaps).

She married third, Feb. 16, 1848 to John Wesley Ross, in Avoyelles Parish, Louisiana - they had one son, J.W. Ross, born Sept. 1849.

John Wesley Ross, died, Dec. 13, 1849 in Avoyelles Parish, of yellow fever. He was a pilot or capt. of a River boat.

John Wesley Ross, was born in Highland County Ohio, May 20, 1809. He traveled up and down the Mississippi River piloting assorted steamboats.

John was son of St. Clair Ross and Rebecca St. Clair Eakins-Ross, (of Newtown Stewart, Tyrone Ireland.)

Lucretia was Johns third wife, as he was her third husband.

John had only two other children, both by first wife Eliza; Morgan St. Clair Ross (also a river boat captain) and Abbott Quincy Ross, (river boat captain and inventor).
Both were born, raised and lived in or around Highland County/Brown County Ohio.

While John was away piloting his steamship, his youngest son, Abbott Quincey, still too young to be on his own, lived with his grandfather St. Clair Ross, until he became of age and went off own his own and married.

I do know through family history, that the Ross's back in Ohio were aware that John had married Ms. Lucretia Nash of Red River.....but what i do not think any of the Ross's back in Ohio knew, was that John had fathered a third son, J.W. Ross, born 1848, only months before he died.

It is unknown whether John was buried in LA, or if he was taken back to Ohio.

Lucretia, i found on the 1850 Census, living back at home
with her parents, Wm Lazarus, Polly Lazarus.
Her name is listed as S. Ross, S being mistranscription of "L".
Her children are listed as:
F. Maonell (14 yrs old) (mistranscription for Murrell)
J.W. Ross (1 yr old)
W. J. Nash (6 yrs old)

I have not been able to find any other info
on Lucretia, or her Murrell, Nash, or Ross sons.

By the time the civil war started(and progressed), all three boys would have been within enlistment age, but i've found no evidence of any of their possible enlistments.

It is also highly possible that the family could have been lost in the mid 1850s yellow fever epidemics that overtook so much of MS, especially the Natchez area, where they lived with Lucretia's parents, William and Polly Martin Boots-Lazarus.

I would like to establish a link for this son J.W. Ross,
(and his brothers, W.J. Nash and F. Murrell) back to their families.

It hurts my heart to think that they or their descendants (if they lived long enough to have any) perhaps have no idea where they came from.

Any leads would be appreciated. Maybe someone can think of something i haven't already tried.
I know I'm pretty late to this party :) but I was wondering if anyone had information on the Rhodes who served. My 3x great grandfather was 2nd Lt. Lewis David Rhodes. I think I'll look into this book as well.

Thank You! Instant results!
The 1911 UCV Reunion Registration yielded J R Morgan in the 23rd Miss, Co. E. In re-checking the roster of the 23rd, they have a James W Morgan, but not James R. They were from Tippah County, which makes sense.
Now I still wonder why his tombstone says 6th Miss.
You have a very nice blog. Thanks!

I had a similar problem documenting the service of my great grandfather for my ebook Poore Boys In Gray. Yet I was able to find enough secondary evidence to confirm his service.

Rather than make a long list here of places to look, I would suggest you go to my blog http://pooreboysingray.wordpress.com. Look particularly at two posts, "Pension files stand in for missing military records" and "Records on the Internet help confirm family lore."

"Records on the Internet" includes a link to the 1911 reunion in Little Rock of the United Confederate Veterans. If he attended, then there would be a registration form for him in which he stated the unit he served in. You can look it up on the database and also order photocopies of the forms.

Good luck with your research!

Ralph Poore
Boise, Idaho

Roster of 6th Miss Regt, Co. This is inscribed on his tombstone, but I haven't been able to find his name in rosters or muster records. He was also referred to as J.R. or Randy Morgan. He claimed to have been within a few yards of Gen. Albert Sidney Johnston at Shiloh at the moment the General was mortally wounded. He was born in Tippah County in 1845. He was a member of UCV Camp 542 after the war, and received a Confederate pension in Arkansas, but the pension documents don't mention the regiment, nor Mississippi. Could he have been in another regiment that was later consolidated with the 6th?

Thank You
I am very familiar with LeGrand Wilson. How can I get a copy of your transcribed document? I have "The Confederate Soldier" and found it valuable in the writing of my book- Also For Glory - see my website www.AlsoForGlory.com

I know you would enjoy my book -- It covers from June 25th when the 42nd crossed the Potomac heading north to July 14 when they crossed back to Virginia. I know you would enjoy having the names of the men in each company from 6/25/63 through 7/14/63.
yes I've transcribed it and mad a PDF copy of the original that I've burnt to DVD. He formed Company D with his friend LeGrand Wilson in 1862 after serving in the 1st Missisippi army in Pensacola.Much of his diary is in the book, "The Confederate Soldier" by LeGrand J. Wilson. Along with several photos of him as well. He was hit by artillery on July 1st when they were the first to engage Union forces as his unit and one other were sent out as "skirmishers". After the battle he was promoted to Maj. and was one of two officers to survive the fight. He lost nearly his entire unit on day 3 at picketts charge, as he said in his diary, "I feel better, had fight today-our Regt. literally cut to pieces. I hear of Co "d" there are but 8 men to be found". so out of 100 men only 8 survived.

I am looking for information on Joseph Black. He was a private in the Confederate service the 42nd AL Co H Moore's Brigade. He was reported killed between Oct 3-5 1862 at the Battle of Corinth. This Jossph apprently had a wife named Nancy who filed a death claim Feb 25, 1864.

I am trying to determine if he is an ancestor if mine, son of Jospeh and Mary (Polly) White Black. Joseph was b. abt 1832 either in Mobile or Choctaw AL. Is there a way to find out if he is buried at Corinth or other service records to show is place of birth?

Any information would be most helpful. The original family story only says he died in service of the Confederacy in the TransMississippi Dept. I cannot find him in the 1860 Census in AL or Miss so far.

Thank you in advance.

I am searching for more information on my GGGrand father, Frank Rouleau. He was a French Canadian who enlisted with the 2nd Mississippi Infantry Company C. in Columbus Mississippi on July 18, 1861. He was captured at the battle of Chancellorsville on April 29, 1863, then swore an oath to the Union. I am really trying to figure out how a 25 year old man from Canada ended up fighting for Mississippi. He ended up living the rest of his life in Philadelphia. Any help or insight would be apprciated.
