WW1 Identification - Joseph GREEN born in Ovingham area of UK around 1869

I did post this on the WW1 board but its probably more specific to the Uniform Identification section.

The attached photo shows my great grandfather in the front left and I'm trying to determine what regiment he served in. I always thought it was the Cameron Highlanders upon inspection of his cap badge. His name was Joseph Green and he was born in the Ovingham area of the UK around 1869 I think. I assume his rank was Sgt? Anyone know why he would have been photographed with others from different regiments? Training camp or similar? And what is the braid leading from the left epaulette?
