Which WWI UK regiment from photograph please
Family folklore has my great grandad William Henry Degnan serving in a Scottish Regiment (picture in a kilt, which is long lost), but he was a 38 years old bootmaker from Leeds. All my other ancestors served in the West Yorkshire Regiments.
I do have a medal card for a WHD from the Argyll & Southerland highlanders and also a post card with Military personnel on it sent by him during the war....the uniform would seem to be the same as a photo I also have of him (all attached).
If anyone could confirm the uniform, that would be fantastic.
Many thanks in advance.

Re: Which WWI UK regiment from photograph please
In the photograph of the large group, all soldiers’ cap badges show the distinctive shape of the White Horse of Hanover, making them members of the West Yorkshire Regiment.
In the other picture, except for staff-sergeant whose badge looks more like the Manchester Regiment, they are again soldiers of the West Yorks.
It’s possible your great grand father had some pre-war regular army service with a Scottish regiment, even a Territorial Force unit like the Tyneside Scottish, and joined (or was conscripted into) the West Yorks during the war.

Re: Which WWI UK regiment from photograph please
If he did have pre-WWI service it’s possible he received either the Queen’s South Africa medal for service in the 2nd Boer War or some other campaign medal.
Check for his name against Scottish regiments in the UK, Military Campaign Medal and Award Rolls, 1793-1949 (on Ancestry).
