Surnames: Ruddy
My late father, Philip Ruddy. sailed on the SS Ethiopia to Rangoon in 1946, I found this information on the back on some photographs of his. Has anyone any information about which regiment sailed and why they were there after the war had finished.

Hi, I don't have any information about why that ship was going to Rangoon. But thought you might use this information.

By no means am I an expert...I just search the net.

Hull number is 526
I believe it was called the Ethiopia Victory
Ship number is VC2-S-AP3/AK 281 Victoria

I got this information from the site below. You may be able to contact them and get some history and a picture. There is a cost involved though.

And there is a little info on this site

Hope this helps a little.

Hi, Thanks for the reply. I'll follow the links you have listed. On two of the photo's my father wrote 'Bay of Bengal' May 1946 and 'Rangoon Docks' April 1946. I've done a search and found that the ship was bulit, 1922, on the Clyde and owned by the British India Steam Navigation Company. So the geographical location fits. Since I know nothing of my fathers army service history, these clues may help.

I just stumbled on this thread so sorry for the late reply! My mother, Heather (Bell) Wilson, sailed on the SS Ethiopia leaving Calcutta, India on Boxing Day 1945 and after 4 days arrived at Rangoon, Burma. She was a Welfare Officer with Toc H (charity) and was on her way to join the 12th Army base at Meiktila Lake, Burma - she does not mention who was on board but did say it was "quite the smallest ship I have ever been on".
