Soldiers in Ireland in 1820s

Hi there,

I am trying to trace further details of Walter Glover whose son was born in Castletownbere in 1822.

http://churchrecords.irishgenealogy.ie/churchrecords/details...

Walter is also mentioned in the record of his daughter's marriage in Killeeternia 1828. His occupation is listed as a soldier.

Does anyone have any ideas where I might trace any information on Walter. If he was a soldier, what was he doing in Castletownbere in 1822 ??

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

I am still searching for Walter. I found the Church of Ireland BMD records for Bere Island from 1787 which includes British military personnel. Unfortunately I found no reference to Walter but I took all the regimental details I could find. Some of the records included the regiment of those listed as grooms/fathers etc.

1st,2nd and 3rd Garrison Battalion

Munster regiment

Tipperary Militia, Wicklow militia and Leitrim Militia

Royal Veteran Battalion

4th, 6th, 8th,9th, 18th, 19th,24th, 34th,41st,51st, and 70th.
Apparently I need to narrow this down in order to get a professional search done. Any ideas anyone ???
Cheers,
Jan

Hi

Generally if a soldier served in a garrison battalion, he would have either served in the army of reserve. The army of reserve meant that the soldier could only serve in the UK, Scotland or Ireland unless they volunteered for a line regiment.
Sometimes old, sick or incapacitated soldiers were moved to a Garrison or veterans battalion. Have you tried searching for a pensioners record at the Archives? Most garrison Battalions served in Ireland at some time during the period of the Napoleon wars. I have an ancestor who served in the5th Garrison Battalion, i also found that the 2nd battalion of the 26th Regiment (cameronians) and the 42nd Regiment( Black Watch) transferred soldiers into this battalion. It might be worthwhile looking into the history of some of the line regiments to see if soldiers were transferred into your garrison battalions..
