13 Field Squadron RE James Birch

I have been looking for one James Birch for some time.
He was with 13 Field Squadron RE in 1943, which was based in Filey from 1st September 1943.
Described as a trooper. Father also in the army.
There is no record of his death on the CWGC website.

I have a number of questions: if his father was also in the army, I imagine that would make James young indeed when he signed up? I have seen different upper ages mentioned online, but one site did say up to 51, youngest age 19.

I did not think that 'trooper' was a term used in the RE?

13 Field Squadron was part of the 11 Armoured Division, formed in Yorkshire 1941.
Would the 13 Field Squadron have existed before this date, perhaps as part of another division?

Given he joined the RE, is it likely that he was an engineer or pursued an engineering job after the war- and perhaps followed in his fathers footsteps?

Many thanks, in hopeful anticipation of some answers!
Jenny
