His cause of dicharge is given as 'Kings Regulations 519'. I don't know what that means. The usual reasons are under KR 392, various paragraphs for unfit through illnes, wounds and training terminated as the man was 'unlikely to become an efficient soldier' Someone may be along with a better answer, or you could phone a local Regimental Museum.
There is some interesting detail on his forms, description, parents names and address etc.
Rob

There is an entry here for his 'Pensions' record that shows he was discharged in Dec 1914 and probably did not complete his training (I did not read all 7 pages). He would therefore NOT have a Medal Index Card.
It is possible that he enlisted succesfully later in the war, but would have had a different Service Number. May I ask where you found his Service Number?
Rob

As per the 1871 census,I believe My Great Grand father was in the british Army. I was researching military records and I believe Michael was in the 8th foot Reg. stationed in Salford Barracks on Regency Road, Manchester. I am confused because the birth dates on the census (1900 & 1910 ) in the United states do not match the birth dates in the 1871 UK census. I know that they came to New York in 1887 /1888 from England with wife Margaret, son John ( Born in Gibraltar ), daughter Mary Josephine Russell Greene and her husband Michael Greene,Children Irene,Nora,Michael and Gerald. Any help apprciated Thanks...Larry

Thomas BUNTING / BUNTON, b. abt. 1755/6, 7th Fusiliers and the American Revolution

I am trying to find information about my 4th great grandfather. His name was Thomas Bunting -- sometimes spelled Bunton, b. abt. 1755/6. He belonged to the 7th Regt. of Fusiliers which was sent to Canada. In 1775 the colonial armies under Montgomery succeed in gaining control of the fort at St. John's at Montreal, however, when Montgomery pushed further and tried to take Quebec, it was a disaster and Montgomery was killed.

At some point, my ancestor Thomas Bunting deserted from the 7th and went to the other side. For a long time this seemed like it was just a family tale, however, I've recently been researching it more thoroughly and have found it to be true.

His name appears in a list of deserters in a book by Clifford Neal Smith. His name is also found in New York on militia muster rolls and I have found pension records.
In the New York military records the information I have been able to find confirmation of his birth and death year, that he was born in England, although it does not say where, and that his occupation was "fuller" -- which I believe had something to do with processing woolen cloth.

I'm wondering where I might find information or records about his service in the 7th. Where he enlisted or was drafted. I've tried the National Archives online, but to no avail. Are there any books which have some of this information? Are there any websites?

It's my hope that if I can find out where he joined the regt. I will be able to find out who his parents were.
Any ideas will be greatly appreciated. :-)

Really appreciate your post.........yes, my couple being from an older generation - it's hard to find documentation. I've tried all of the usual routes online (Ancestry.com, Familysearch.org, various English county genealogy parish records online, hired researcher in the past, etc.

How lucky for you that his marriage at Corfu was on findmypast. I have a current subscription right now to findmypast, but so far I haven't been able to find anything. Very frustrating!

Your post was so similar to mine.....both the 11th foot - marriage prob. outside of England (during one of the postings abroad of the 11th) and not too far apart in date - so, that's why your post gave me hope!

Thanks a lot.

My soldier had a Chelsea pension which was indexed online, and the marriage at Corfu was indexed on findmypast. I kept looking for death certificates and additional census records without much luck, then I hired a researcher. I, too, cannot travel to Kew at this time. The researcher searched the muster rolls for pension payments and quickly found that he died in Scotland in 1850. Now I'm trying to find his widow and children in 1851 without much luck--I think they travelled abroad again.
The officer you are looking for is a generation older than mine. I haven't located the birth records and parents of my couple, I'm still looking. Good luck!
My mother is 1/2 Welsh and we have many cousins in Wales and a few in England. My dad's grandfather was from England and came to the states at the age of 14 and kept a bit of his English accent all his life here.
Wow - I have had subscriptions to Ancestry.com in the past and did NOT see any Tree that gave The Isle of Mann as the birthplace for the dau. Goodlatte Mabelle Rynd. On her death cert. in Australia, her son lists her as from The Isle of Wight??? I will have to check into The Isle of Mann - if true, there should be an actual parish baptism record with a precise date in 1809.

IF the Isle of Mann is correct - that is a bit strange, as the 11th Foot during 1808/1809 were stationed on the Island of Madeira???????? After Madeira, the 11th Foot left for Portugal and Spain where Lt. Goodlatt Rynd met his death at Salamanca in 1812. So, I would wonder WHY??? Harriet Jane would be giving birth in 1809 to dau. Goodlatte Mabelle on the Isle of Mann? One of those genealogy contradictions which will have to be sorted out. For dau. Goodlatte Mabelle to be conceived, Harriet would have had to be with her husband in 1808/1809 - and HE was with the 11th Foot on Madeira? Yikes, this family history stuff can sometimes drive you crazy!!!

Could you tell me just the name of the family tree where this was found: I have a cousin - last name DECKER who is related through Harriet Jane's 1st marriage - and perhaps this was from his tree.

The reason I wonder is because I am the one who found the baptism doc's from Uitenhage for the 2 children by John Brown/e and I gave this info. ONLY to my cousin (Decker).

I think even though the tree on Ancestry says Harriet's maiden name is Montgomery - this is NOT verified - as we (cousins) all have "Montgomery" as the LIKELY name, but NO actual marriage cert./doc. to support this.

Also, even though the tree you cite mentions County Meath for the birthplace of Maria Rynd - we in the family ,SO FAR, have not been able to find actual proof (a baptism record) of this - her place of birth there has just been handed down in the family.

Yes, my 3xgreat-grandmother Jane Ann who married Hugh Wilson in Tacna, Peru - we have lots on her. Hugh was a widower with a dau. Rose and poss. a son from his first marriage to Mary Gaze. Hugh and Jane Ann had 12 or 13 children!!! Many of them were born in Peru before the family returned to England. Hugh was the British Consul in Arica, Peru during the 1830's and 1840's, thus the reason why the family was in South America. Jane's half sister "Maria Rynd" (by Harriet's first marriage to Lt. Rynd of the 11th Foot) also married a Consu - her husband was the Bolivian Consul in Paris at the time of their marriage in 1840 in England.

I will CERTAINLY try to pursue the Isle of Mann angle (vs. the Isle of Wight we had previously been steered to).

My brother-in-law DOES have a subscription to Ancestry at present, so if you could let me know the NAME of the tree which cited the reference to the Isle of Mann birth for dau. Goodlatte in 1809 - I will see if that was from my cousin or perhaps another of our cousins.

REALLY appreciate ALL your help - Very kind of you!

We have most everything else (all census records, about their time in South America, dau. Goodlatte's time, marriage, etc. in Australia, dau. Maria's time in Bolivia, etc.). My cousin and I (both descended from Harriet Jane - he from 1st marriage, me from 2nd marriage) are on geni.com and have linked up just about everything else.

Our main problems were: to VERIFY the surname of Montgomery through an actual document (rather than JUST family lore, and to verify the actual date and place of marriage for Lt. Goodlatt Rynd and Harriet Jane.

THANK you very much - very kind of you to offer so much help.

Best,

Debbie

11th Regiment of Foot - Lt. Goodlatt RYND marriage c.1800-1812

I am trying to track down a marriage of a Lt. Goodlatt Rynd (born in Ireland c.1780) who served with the 11th Foot from 1806 until 1812 when he was killed at the Battle of Salamanca.

He left a wife and 2 children when he died - his 2 children were born c.1809 and c.1812 either in Ireland or in one of the places where the 11th foot would have been stationed during those dates. His widow is my direct ancestor. She later remarried and had 2 more children by her 2nd husband - I descend from the dau. of this 2nd marriage.

My problem: I have the marriage record of her 2nd marriage to John Brown/e (in 1815 London), however, because she was a widow at the time of the marriage, her name on the marriage doc. lists her as: Harriet Jane Rynd (widow) - thus, it does NOT give me her maiden name which I need to trace her line. Since I need her maiden name to do more research on this branch of my family, I need to find evidence of her 1st marriage to Goodlatt Rynd - where her maiden name would be listed.

Because her first child by Lt. Goodlatt Rynd was born c.1809, I would be looking for his marriage to Harriet Jane in the time period just before 1809. In 1809, Goodlatt had already served with the 11th foot for 3 years, and he remained with the 11th until his death at the battle of Salamanca in 1812.

Harriet Jane later received a widow's pension from the Army based on Goodlatt's service, so she must have presented some form of proof? of her marriage to him. I have hit a dead end on this and would appreciate any help/suggestions.

Harriet Jane's maiden name might??? have been "Montgomery" or "Temple". Family lore says she was in some way related to Lord Palmerston (in fact she named her son by her 2nd marriage after Palmerston - her son's name was "John Henry Temple Torrens Brown/e" which seems to lend some credence to the possibility of a relation with Lord Palmerston). I have tried to follow this poss. path to her maiden name, but again, I have found nothing so far.

I am in the USA, so cannot travel directly to The National Archives, Kew or some other place directly. I have paid for some research in the past, but costs for professional research has skyrocketed to prohibited amounts at this time.

Thanking any and all who may see this post and offer ideas or avenues which I could explore to track down the marriage for LT. GOODLATT RYND (11th Regiment of Foot) and his wife, HARRIET JANE (maiden name poss. Montgomery, Temple, or???). Harriet Jane is my 4xgreat-grandmother.

Many thanks,

Debbie Frickie
Florida, USA
Ian,

Thanks for your help, I've found that small bits of info' can lead to lot! more info'.

As you have said injuries would be a cause for changing Battalions as there is no family knowledge of changing Battalions until the purchase of the Certificates this year.

Family belief was that he was invalided out at the start of the War. Injuries were from, (a horse falling onto him in a shell hole & being gassed at the same time). He had only one lung as a result.

*Did the 16th NF have any attacks before the Thiepval Somme France where he may of been injured.
A Birth Cert' dated 24 Jul 1916 has Northumberland Fusiliers. The change from the NF to the 11th DLI occurred between Feb 1917 & Feb 1918 from the Certificates, so he was most likely recovering from his injuries in this time span.

Something that may be of interest in regards to War memorabilia, William was known to have a metal spoon with his service number engraved on it (whereabouts now unknown), maybe issued from either the NF or the DLI.

Many thanks for your help,
Michele
Seems like my shorter post went through, so I'll try again to post my longer post (I'll break into two parts, perhaps this way it will go through).

(First part of msg.)

Thank you for all your new msg's that were waiting for me. I just got home a short time ago (went to see my 87 year old mother who is in assisted living up in Daytona Beach, about a 35 min. drive from me). I spent several hours visiting her, so please forgive me for not getting back to you sooner.

One of the trees you cite is from my cousin. I will have to check the other one out next week when I visit my sister and b-in-law who do have an Ancestry subscription.

My cousin did send me the marriage doc. between Maria Rynd and Pedro Jose de Guerra (he was the Bolivian Consul I mentioned). My 3xgreat-grandmother Jane Ann and her brother John Henry Temple Torrens Browne are the witnesses on the cert. for their 1/2 sister Maria. We also have a London Times snippet which states that Maria was given away by her brother. Not sure if Harriet Jane was still alive in 1840 when Maria married.

Sadly, my 4xgreat-grandfather John Browne (Harriet's 2nd husband) died in March 1823 in Gambia of the yellow fever epidemic. He had been posted to Sierra Leone, but had gone up to Bathurst on the Gambia for business and died there. He was an Officer of the Commissariat Dept. and had previously been posted at the Cape Town, Algoa Bay, etc. - thus, the reason why Jane Ann and her brother were born in South Africa.

Fingers crossed the above goes through to you - if it does, will post 2nd half shortly. -Debbie-

Hi........many thanks for your post and mentions of Lt. Goodlatt Rynd having been with the 100th and the 96th prior to the 11th Regiment of Foot.

We were aware of these earlier postings, however, the dates of his childrens' births c.1809 and c.1812 were well into his service with the 11th Foot. He served with the 11th Foot from March 1806 till his death at Salamanca in 1812.

Back in the 1800's the birth of a first child usually happened within one or two years of marriage - thus, we think??? the marriage would have taken place during his time with the 11th Foot - most likely married in 1807-1809.

There is the possibility, of course, of a child we don't know about born prior to 1809 (perhaps that died young). In that case, the marriage might have taken place earlier?

Thank you so much........

Debbie

Re: Sgt. John PHILLIPS, 11th Foot Regiment

I was very interested to find/read your posts regarding your ancestor who served in the 11th Regiment of Foot. I was also interested to see that you were able to track down his marriage on Corfu.

I posted to you a little while ago regarding my Great Grandfather Henry Maddison who I believe served in the 16th. I have attached a copy of a clipping from a newspaper of hime as well as the embarkation rolls (which you probably have) His number is 16/1436.

WOW!!!!! I am amazed.Why couldn't I find him??????
When I come down off the ceiling.......
In a document I have it says William became an apprentice shoemaker to his father. Just amazing. There are so many distinctive elements in this record. On both of Williams marriage certificates it states that his father was a shoemaker. Sadly I have no information about William's mother.
I have just found out that Rathfriland is in Northern Ireland. All other information relative to William has been from Carlow in Southern Ireland.
I presume I can get the original army documents?

This is going to sound vague I'm afraid. John/Thomas's son is William my 2x great gradfather. He was married twice. His first certificate states his father as John his second certificate says Thomas. Unquestionably the same person.A document I have says William's parents were English and his father a soldier in the British Army living in Ireland. One document says when William was only a few months old was taken by his father and was reared in the Ionian Isles, Gibraltar and the Mediterranean only to return to Ireland 11 years later. Different census returns say William was born in Malta, Gibraltar and Ireland. I can not seem to find the regiment that was serving in the Mediterranean from 1831 when William was born.
So I have a who, when born -no and where born -no.

Any surviving military records of Henry Stanley's Army Career could well be found under the Military Sections of online F.H. websites.
Failing that, then a trip is required to the Nationial Archives see :
http://www.nationalarchives.gov.uk/

Rgds
Owen Ap Benfro
