I have found my Irish ancestor John (Jas/ Jno) Fitzpatrick in census returns and on a marriage certificate as follows:
1851: living in private address with wife Margaret and child, a gunner in the RA in Woolwich
1861: living in married quarters with wife Margaret and three children, RA in Portsmouth. The enumeration district is '10th Brigade Royal Regiment of Artillery'
1871: John's occupation is Sargeant RA on his son's marriage certificate.
My question is: how best do I work out what regiment he was with - having such a common name it's not easy!
I can't find any readily available way to match the '10th brigade' to a regiment either.
Is it possible for me to find out what regiments were stationed at Woolwich and Portsmouth Barracks at those times?
Many thanks,
Tracey
