Hello! I have found evidence that my Great Grandfather was in the SAW.
Company M, Georgia infantry. Name: Frederick B Tidwell
Do any of you SAW experienced folks know where to send me for more info, photos etc about this company? (the image of his pension card is attached)
Thanks in Advance

This is a good website for help that I have used in the past.

Have you tried the Georgia State Archives and see if they have a Veterans Museum?

Ancestry has a scanned image of the Military headstone ordered for him for his burial in the Saint Augustine National Cemetery in 1933.

Filed for a Pension:

Would you be able to tell me which Infantry Unit he was in by looking at his pension card?
I don't seem to see anything noting 1st, 2nd or 3rd GA infantry...etc...
If not how would I find out.. I am having a heck of a time locating anything on this company.

The card has "M 1 GA Inf". Which I read as Company M 1st Georgia Infantry.

According to the card, he applied for pension in 1931. The National Archives here in DC should have the compiled military service record and the pension file for Spanish-American War veterans. To my knowledge, these are not online at any subscription service, they are still copied from the original documents. Since the pension was applied for after 1930, the pension file may or may not have been transferred to the National Archives yet. It is possible that it is still being held by a local V.A. office. No way to know without ordering it at NARA and seeing if the request comes back with a file or a rejection slip. You can contact me privately at peg (then the at sign) reevesweb (then dot com).

Thank you for the information! I am not seeing where you find the 1931 application? I only see the date of 1900 stamped anywhere on that card? email: heavenscentcandles(at)comcast(dot)net

There is more than one pension index, and the one I look at on microfilm at NARA says that your soldier applied for pension on December 8, 1931. That is why this pension file may or may not be available yet. There is a law where personal information is sealed for 72 years, which is why the most recent census available for public view is 1940. With pensions, it depends how long the pension file stayed open. If the soldier lived for a long time, or if there was a dependent still getting pension long after the soldier died, it will not be available for a while.
