1904 Russo-Japanese war records? (Specifically: Battle of Port Arthur)

Surnames: Costarcov
So, until recently I knew quite little about one of my great-grandfathers (my maternal grandpa's dad). As he died when my grandpa was quite little, and then the whole family moved, details are quite murky.

So, what I knew: His name was Alexandr Costarcov (or at least that's how it transliterates into Romanian), he was a cossack from the Don bassin area, possibly Voronej area but not sure; when the Soviets came into powr he became one of the many White Emigres, so he moved to Ceadir-Lunga, in which is now the Republic of Moldova (used to be Romania back then, before WW2), where he started a wine business and met my great-grandma.We have no idea whre he was from exactly or what his family of origin was.

What I just found out: In his youth, he has been a soldier/sailor in the Czar's Navy, and he fought in the Russo-Jampaese war. His ship was hit by the Japanese, and only a few people survived the shipwreck by holding on to planks; he did make it to the shore, but he was taken prisoner (not sure for how long or how he got out). Now I'm wondering if there are any records of that anywhre, which may help me shed light on his origins. Any suggestions?

This is the Russian War and Historical Archives site to where you could send your request for information. (it’s in Russian). They have a lot of materials about Russian Army military personnel of 18-20 century. They can also do genealogic research. Lists of generals, officers, soldiers and clerks of the Military Ministry for the period of 1720-1900 (Fund 489), history of military service of officers (1881-1917) (Fund 409) and lists by seniority of generals and officers for 1737-1917 (funds 407 and 408).
For them to provide archive research, they need the following information:
1. For the period of 18-beginning of 20 century- Last Name, First Name, Patronymic, time and place of service (number of the regiment or a military institution).
2. For the period 1816-1881 - Last Name, First Name, Patronymic and military rank (for enlisted men –the place of service)
3. For 1881-1917 for officers and generals - Last Name, First Name, Patronymic and approximate time of service; for the rest – the number of the military division or the name of the military institution.
