Hey TexMexFla,
Thanks for the info on Edward Ulysses Cohea. Now I wonder where he went right after the war. We know he came to Alameda county in 1850 and he married my great-great grandma in 1851. Did he come overland or by ship?
Thanks again,
Dana

I did not find a pension request listed for Edward. For free information, you might try some MS county histories to see if the enlistees are recorded. For a fee, the National Archives would have his enlistment record and his bounty land application file. That would give you his rank. When requesting a file on line from the National Archives, I would put his rank as enlisted and then in the remarks section of the form put "not sure of rank".

In 1849 a motion was made in the Missouri Senate by Mr. Hancock to get assistance for Theodore Rhaesa, late Chief Musician for the State of Missouri. This request was referred to committee and later denied. I am guessing he was in a unit of the military during the Mexican-American War. I know that he was a music teacher and had a photography studio in St Louis in 1845 (St Louis Reveille). There were unclaimed letters for him in New York City 1842 and Baltimore in 1844.
If anyone runs across this name, would greatly appreciate a heads up!

Lou, if he wasn't pensioned then the bounty land warrant application file is what you want. You might also want to order the surrendered warrant file. Both are at NARA D.C. I don't know how much they are charging for it at this point. I am an independent paid researcher and may or may not be cheaper than ordering from NARA. NARA's website is: www.nara.gov or you can contact me privately at peg (and the at sign) reevesweb.com

Yes, there is an index to the compiled service records of Mexican War soldiers. It is on microfilm M616 at the National Archives. In this case, you know that he served in the Mexican War, because the patent certificate that you found at the Bureau of Land Management website is a military warrant, and it names the regiment that he served in. The compiled military service record is not going to tell you anything about this land. Bounty land was a reward for military service, but it was something that the soldier had to apply for. There will be a bounty land application file at NARA (unless he was pensioned, in which case the BLW application will be filed in with the pension papers). There will also be a surrendered warrant.

Your soldier did not get land in Wisconsin. What he received was a bounty land warrant, which was a piece of paper that could be exchanged for a land patent anywhere of his choosing on the public domain. Your soldier sold this piece of paper to a third party who is named on the patent certificate as the "assignee" of your soldier. This is the person who actually chose land in Wisconsin and patented land there. At the BLM site, the "w" next to the name is the "warrantee", in other words, the soldier who received the warrant. The "p" next to a name is the "patentee", the person who actually patented land with the warrant. The patentee might be the soldier himself or somebody else. In your case, it is somebody else who got the land in Wisconsin. The surrendered warrant file at NARA would contain the actual warrant certificate, showing the sale of same on the reverse side of the document, similar to how we might sell our car by signing the back of the title over to someone who has purchased it.

The most information you will find on this soldier would be in his pension file if he was a pensioner. The pension index is also at NARA, but I believe there are printed versions of it. I can't tell you where to find those, since I always look at the microfilm indexes in person at NARA. If there is no pension, he definitely has a bounty land application file, as well as a surrendered warrant file. His compiled military service record would not give you any personal information about him, only his military record of enlistment, discharge, pay, any promotions or disciplinary actions, and whether he was present, absent, sick, or AWOL.

I don't know how old your soldier was, but sometimes young soldiers of the Mexican War went on to become older officers in the Civil War. You might want to check the soldiers' and sailors' website at: www.itd.nps.gov/cwss and see if you find your soldier in the Civil War. If he was in Louisiana during the Mexican War, you might find him in a Confederate regiment.

First, I didn't find a Mexican War Pension listed for either James or Francis McHugh. However, unless they were war related disabled, they would not be able to apply until 1887 and many did not live that long.

Therefore, I suggest you request from the National Archives the compiled military service record of James giving the information you listed here. If they don't find one, you won't be charged. Keep in mind the Mexican War was from 1846 - 1848 and the potato famine in Ireland wasn't unill 1846.

I assume you have Donald's Civil War Pension Record which gives his enlistment dates and unit. Therefore you could request his compilied military service record which may or may not have more information.

In addition, I did find a Mexican War Pension record for a Donald McMilian for service on USS Ohio in the Marine Corp, SC-5166, he applied in Wisconsin in May 1887. There is also an Army pension record listed as C-21099 for service in Co. F, 38th NY State Volunteers. If this is also your ancestor, perhaps these records will give you more clues. Often relatives and old neighbors gave statements in support of the pension.

What are your thoughts about this information?
Sandy

He was an Irish Immigrant.

On the Bureau of Land Management, I found some records one dating from 1850 that says James McHugh was in the Louisiana Battalion of Mounted Volunteers and received land in Wisconsin.

He also had a brother Francis McHugh that also settled with him in Sauk County Wisconsin. They might have served together.. but I am not sure.

Whats the best place to look for Mexican War veterans?

Thanks,
Lou Foss

Hope you're still out there! I am descended from John Kent also like your wife. Have been researching the family history too. I have never been able to locate his military service record even tho his death record indicates he was a veteran of the U.S. - Mexican War. Did you find any proof? I have not found his passenger ship record or port of entry either. He supposedly immigrated in 1846, his ship sank and he was said to be a hero because he rescued many fellow passengers and was only member of his family to survive. (That's the story anyway). I theorize he arrived in New Orleans or possibly even Galveston, TX as many German immigrants did. He is listed in many records as being Prussian. Would love to discuss further with you. Drop me a line!

Joni Leffler
jolylefgon@yahoo.com
My gggrandfather was Ulysses Weathersby and his obituary in the Beeville (TX) newspaper indicates that prior to his service in the Civil War, he had served in the Mexican War. I have no idea as to his outfit or his dates of service but if you have any records of service, I would be delighted to receive such information. Many thanks.
Jerry Kirkland, Santa Maria, CA

Thanks very much, Sandy. I know my ancestor George Cassidy/Cassady/Cassady did serve in the Mexican War from Ohio but couldn't find him in the index at the National Archives. I have a paper showing he applied for a disability pension through the House of Representatives but I don't know where to find his original pension application - if you have ideas about that, I would appreciate it. Thanks again!

I found that Robert was a clerk in the Quartermasters Department of the War Department, assigned to Camargo, Mexico earning $60 per month. I’d guess this is a civilian position.

I found this information in
"The Register of all Officers and Agents, Civil, Military, and Naval, in the Service of the United States on the Thirtieth September, 1847, with the names, force, and condition of all ships and vessels belonging to the United States, and when and where built; together with the names and compensation of all printers in any way employed by Congress, or any department or officer of the government."

Prepared at the Department of State, in pursuance of Resolutions of Congress of April 27, 1816, and July 14, 1832. Washington: J. & G.S. Gideon, Printers. 1847

This document is sometimes called "The Blue Book" or "the Official Register of the United States." It's a gold mine for diplomatic service, quartermaster, post masters, etc. listed by name.
His widow outlived him, but after he enlisted in the Civil War for the second time he abandoned them. I am just trying to find any information he might have given at the time of this enlistmentin 1845 or 6 as to place of birth or parents. He was from Canada, originally Scotland.

I managed to get a copy of my g-g-grandfather's compiled military record for the Mexican War. It contains the muster rolls for his second tour with Lloyd Tilghman's light artillery battery from August, 1847 until July, 1848. This battery was attached to the Hughes' Regiment of the Maryland and D.C. Volunteers, I also found him in Charles J. Wells' "Maryland and the District of Columbia Volunteers in the Mexican War". That also shows him as being in Co. A (Steuart's Company) of the Watson Battalion (1846-1847). Apparently, there are no surviving muster rolls for Co. A.

Anyway, this gives me the proof I was looking for and I would like to thank you for your help. I have yet to order the bounty land applications that I know he submitted and sold. I will likely do that, as there may be some bits of information that I have yet to find.

Once I have everything I need, I will send it off to DMWV.

Thanks, again.
Now that you know which companies and regiment Charles served in and from which state, I would try ordering his bounty land application file again...they should be able to find it.

I know the National Archives is now offering electronic record copies, however, I don't think the DMWV has seen one in order to accept it. Maybe you shold contact DMWV at their website and ask. Otherwise, submit paper copies from the National Archives. Also, you could request Charles's Compiled Military Service File for the Mexican War...$25.

Thank you for the web address, I didn't know they added the actual document. This is the "land entry" document which shows where the warrant was used to buy land. Some of the soldiers sold their warrants to land speculators who sold them to others.
Hi,

I drew a blank from the National Archives, but I did find land grants at the BLM that were issued to Charles W. Purcell and assigned to other individuals. The first states that he was a private in Captain Stewart's company of the Maryland and District of Columbia Volunteers. This regiment was disbanded in May of 1847 and the grant was issued in February of 1848. The second land grant was issued in February of 1850 and states that Charles was a 3rd sgt. in Captain Tilghman's company of the Maryland and District of Columbia Volunteers. This regiment was formed in May and June of 1847 and disbanded in July of 1848. the links are here:
http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/details/patent/default.aspx?ac...

http://www.glorecords.blm.gov/details/patent/default.aspx?ac...

In regards to the DMWV, do they only accept mailed copied for the veteran, or will they accept a form that has been emailed?

Thanks for your help.
Thank you for your reply. I am quite certain that Charles Purcell was in the Mexican War, as he entered the Civil War as an experienced artilleryman. He also headed straight for John Fremont's command in St. Louis, from his home in Indianapolis, when war broke out. My guess is that he knew Fremont from the Mexican War, or at least was familiar with him.

His entry into the Civil War is a little cloudy. I can't find evidence of his original enlistment, in St. Louis. Although he shows up in the Union records as a 1st Lt. of artillery in the fall of 1861 at the Battle of Fredericktown, his record of enlistment doesn't show up until December of that year. But, I know from letters from his wife that he was assigned to establish and command artillery at Fort Hovey (later named Fort Curtis), south of Ironton, MO in the summer of '61. She also states that he was not paid for his first 10 months of service. So, it is possible that whatever he had going with Fremont was somehow under the table. When Fremont was relieved of his command, Charles ended up enlisting in the Missouri State Militia as a 2nd Lt and his saga began in earnest. :-)

He is buried at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis. I will send the location to DMWV once I have some proof.

Thanks again.
I did not find a listing for a mexican war pension for Charles or his widow. Perhaps because his rank was an officer in the civil war, that pension was more money, but I'm not very knowledgeable about that issue.

You could request Charles' mexican war bounty land application file. If he did serve during that war, he definitely would have applied. There is no charge if the national archives doesn't find one, $25 if they do.

If you find proof of his service, the Descendants of Mexican War Veterans would like to know where he is buried and if there is a stone marker: www.dmwv.org

According to my grandmother, my great great grandfather, Charles W. Purcell, joined Samuel Ringgold's flying artillery battalion out of Baltimore at the start of the Mexican-American War. Given that Ringgold was killed at Palo Alto, I assume he joined before that.

Charles was an artilleryman in the Civil War and was killed in action at the Battle of Pilot Knob, in Missouri. I have found a lot of information about him during that period, but nothing for the Mexican-American War. I have no idea if he was on the pension rolls for that conflict. His wife did draw a Captain's pension for the Civil War. But again, nothing about the Mexican-American War. If you could do a lookup on Charles W. Purcell, I would forever be in your debt. Thanks!

There's usually no way to determine where a soldier is "from" in the Mexican War Pension books I have. The book only lists the States' regiment of volunteer soldiers and lists what State the soldier/widow resided in at the time of application. For example, my ancestor was "from" Ireland (and wasn't Irish) and his parents and siblings were living in Ohio; however, my ancestor had recently moved to Frankfort Kentucky and enlisted there in the 1st Ky Cavalry. He applied for his pension in Iowa. His brother, who resided with the family in Ohio, enlisted in the 15th U. S. Infantry and applied for his pension also in Iowa.

Do you have any further information about your soldier or his widow such as date/year of birth, name of spouse, date of death or State he lived in after the war?

I found a collection of reports printed in 1851 - First Regiment of NY Volunteers upon their return from Mexico.

It's not a complete list of the regiment and they acknowledge that it's not even a full list of men entitled to receive a medal but I thought it might be of use to someone. "The returns, as made, are as yet imperfect, and cause some dissatisfaction to the relatives, as well as the disabled, but returned volunteer."

The ancestor I happen to be looking for is mentioned in Bancroft but not here, guess he wasn't a where's my medal type of guy.

I only skimmed the book but it contains funeral arrangements for officers, parade routes, eulogies and it describes the medal and gives the name of the artist, etc. Really interesting stuff.

http://archive.org/stream/reportsofspecial00newy#page/74/mod...

Edit - I just noticed that the owner of the book counted up all the men listed in each Company and on page 76 notes - "The names left out of this list would make the entire 'something' of Company A, say 78 men"
Re: Amos Martin obituary, Mexican War veteran

I suspect Amos Martin did not serve in the U S Military during the war with Mexico. I requested a copy of his Mexican War Bounty Land application from the National Archives and they could not find one. Perhaps he served as a contractor or teamster or some other civilian capacity for which he would not be entitled to a land warrant or Mexican War Pension. Perhaps his civil war pension record will have more information. Also, sometimes the soldier's name was recorded incorrectly or they used an alias.
