Naaman L. Burgess Sr. in Mexican War

Naaman L. Burgess Sr. in Mexican War

Classification: Query
Surnames: Burgess, Lillard, Ottman, McLean
I have found two records for the pension of Naaman L. Burgess Sr. The record from Ancestry.com has his service as Teamster 2 M Dept. Filing date 27 April 1887, Application # 11416, Certificate:, None in Louisiana. The record from Fold3 under Invalid has Orig. Burgess, Naaman L. Sr, Under that is Ctf. with the name Lillard, Thomas K. Under Dependent is has the name Ottmann, Louis, ctf 8.817 and under him is the name McLean, William T.

I am trying to figure out if this Naaman L. Burgess, Sr., is my 3x great grandfather but none of these other names are in my family tree. Who are these people and did Naaman actually receive a pension? How would I find more on his pension file?

I don't find the first record at Ancestry, but at FamilySearch.org. It is an index with scanned cards of applications only. You still have to contact the NARA and with application number request his full service file. Read the information about the US Mexican War records at FamilySearch.
As for the Fold3 record...I do not have access but it looks to me to be basically the same, just a list of names of those applied for a pension.
The Louisiana State Archives may have records too.

Thank you. I was wrong when I said I found the record on Ancestry. It was actually Familysearch.org. Also, after some reading, I now know that the teamsters were under the Quartermasters Dept so it does not say "Teamsters 2, M Dept." but is really Q,.M.. Dept. Fold3 only has an index. I will be contacting the Louisiana State Archives and National Archives to see where his service record is.

Thank you,
Lisa
