My Uncle told me the other day that my great great grandmother told him once that her father (a Union American Civil War veteran) had gone to Central or South America after the Civil War to fight in the South American Revolutions. Does anyone know how to confirm or deny a U.S. citizen, ex-military, that may have participated in the Central or South American Revolutions (1865-1900). Are there any U.S supported missions to those locations for that period? Is there a way to track possible mercenary/soldier of fortune activity from that era? Passport, visa type records that might confirm a trip like that? Any help would be appreciated, not sure wher to start with that family rumor/piece of info. Thanks.
