Charles Guthrie Wood, born 2 Oct 1879, Eastwood, Renfrew, Scotland studied as an enginner, and joined the merchant marines probably about 1901. He remained with the merchant service until he married on 19 May 1916, and probably left after his first daughter was born on 29 Oct 1919.
I have his medals and ribbons -
Mercantile Marine Ribbon issued 23-8-19 to MMO Manchester
British Medal Ribbon issued 23-8-19 to MMO Manchester.
Mercantile Marine Medal issued 20 Dec 1940 to MMO....
British Medal issued 20 Dec 19450 to MMO.......
Cert. 4c 39940 and 970265. BT251/1

My mother tells me that he travvelled all over the world - from the Zambezi in Africa, to the Hymalayans. I have a beautiful hand carved table which he brought back in about 1913 from a family in the Hymalayans whom he did a good deed for.
I can find out very little about his sevice and travels in the Merchant Marines.
Where can I find out more information about my grandfather's escapades in the merchant navy.
many thanks,
Mike Bridgeford
