Some suggest Victoria Cross, another Royal Irish Army Medall of Gallantry.

Is there a British Millitary history site with EMAIL address I could send it to? I have found various sites but EMAIL to send it.

Difficult to see enough to say what it is, BUT it's the wrong shape for a VC and the ribbon is not even similar either. I have never heard of the Royal Irish Army Medal of Gallantry, and since Ireland was entirely under British rule at the time there was no 'Irish Army' so I can't see that any such beast would have existed. Sorry.

I have had a few suggestions today on other sites saying it might be some type of Fraternal Order medal for soemthing like AOH or the KOC. This is is more likely correct.

It’s certainly is not a medal of the British (or any other) military and as Rob has pointed out, in the 1870’s there was no such thing as “Royal Irish Army”; the person who made such a suggestion was wrong to do so.

I really do wish we could kill the myth that there was ever an independent Royal Irish Army (or even a “Royal” army in the UK); I’ve even got distant cousins in the US who will insist on referring to it. Not even in the days of a recognised “King of Ireland” in the 15 & 16 centuries was there a “Royal Irish Army”. Ever since the Acts of Union (first with Ireland and later with Scotland) there has only been the British Army; and it’s only some that have the prefix Royal; mind you every one of the many regiments and corps had a large proportion of Irish & Scots among their ranks.

Sorry about that, back to the medal.

The “Cross Pattee” (and the 8-pointed star Maltese Cross) was and still is used by many civilian organisations and although many can be quickly eliminated as having such a medal/award, even identifying a list of possible organisations could prove a challenge.

I couldn’t find any cross style award images for the Ancient Order of Hibernians, but Google for - Knights of Columbus cross – and click Images, then scrolling down the returned picture, there are several images of cross medallions related to the organisation that it could be but I cannot find any ribbons for them.

Clearly the key is whatever it is on top of the ribbon or suspender; do you have a copy of the photograph that you could scan at high resolution, especially the medal part?

Have you tried to see if he may have belonged to an organisation related to his work?

You could try a search for his name in online old New York newspapers or check for organisations and records in the locality of where he lived at the time.
