This is not a "military" pin or at least used by US or British armed or Naval Forces. As pointed out a castle is used for an engineering unit or Corps of Engineers but it is a squared or sharp edged 3 turret image. Yours I would call stylized. Lightning Bolts or Arrows usually denote fast strike or Electrical or maybe even Nuclear identity.

This pin could have been created by a Military member for a wife or girlfriend or mother that was to resemble a military units official insignia. Maybe a Veterans Organization or Reunion pin.

It could be a fraternal order pin denoting an official duty within a lodge or club. There are or were many such organizations, some national some local between 1850 and 1950.

To best find out you should investigate your grandfathers life or even great grandfather as it may have been passed down from further back. Or it could just be a pin found by your grandfather at a garage sale that he liked the look of and bought. Ask all your older relatives if they know how he got it.

A way to date it is to look at the back and look up when the method of "pinning" was started or discontinued. Could be a hat, lapel, or tie tac.
