My father has a medal that we don't know anything about. It has a lion standing on it’s hind legs with a thistle at the 3, 6, 9 and 12 o’clock positions. From googling lion and thistle, I believe that this medal has a Scottish origin (but I could be wrong).
I know that my great grandfather had become friends with Sir Robert McAlpine while the railway line was being constructed between County Wexford and County Waterford here in Ireland. I’ve been told that Sir Robert asked my great grandfather (who was a retired R.I.C. Sgt.) to help out with the war effort by joining the Gretna Green police. My great grandfather left his family in Ireland for the duration of the WW1, and went to work in Scotland.
I've tried uploading a photo here, but it won't work.
Could this medal be from my great grandfather’s time in Scotland? Any information would be appreciated.

The picture has to be a jpeg format and already on your PC - need front and back and check for inscription on the edge, if you still have problems email it to me and look at it and attach to my reply email to jeffp DOT h AT bt[No spam]internet DOT com – make the obvious changes and be sure there are no spaces.

JeffH01,
I've emailed you the photo. Let me know if you haven't got it - I possibly made a mistake with the address.
By the way, I don't think it's a military medal. My post must have been moved as I originally had it on the Scotland messageboard.
Thanks again for all your help.

I guessed it wasn’t military, certainly not a common one, but could be some civil award or a commemorative medallion. I can only have a look and attach the image[s] so others can see.

Looks like it’s from a watch chain, I expect the watch would have had an inscription that would have explained it.
Certainly Scottish – all the National Emblems are there: Saltire Cross, Thistles and Lion Rampant, the sort of thing used to show a person’s Scottish heritage or some other reminder of Scotland.
Missed the silver hallmarks much more obvious in the pictures you sent me, so it's solid silver and almost certainly from a watch chain.

Thanks for that Jeff. I ended up printing the photos and then scanning them back on to the computer again. I'd say that's why the hallmark isn't as clear here.
I'll check for the year on the hallmark and that will give me an idea of who could have had it. But as I mentioned, my great grandfather was in Scotland during WW1, so he could have got it to remind him of his time there.
Thanks for all your help Jeff. One more mystery solved :).
