Charles became a prsioner of the Chinese in their first attack on US Forces inside far North Korea, at Unsan.

He was in the 8th Cavalry Rgt and the unit was probing northward, in front of the rest of the 1st Cav Division. They became cutoff, totally isolated, no chance of rescue.

The men fought for 2.5 days, some escaping but the rest were killed or captured.

The Army did not pay attention to the warning by the Chinese and were lured farther north into a waiting trap which was sprung on Thanksgiving Day evening of 1950.

He enlisted in August of 1950 at Camp Lejeune and was in the 1st Amphibian Battalion. He was sent to Korea in the Spring of 1951 and was assigned to Hingham MA. before leaving the Corps. Muster roll information of particular units and postings would be great. Thanks,

Here's a quick rundown, you'd have to research the movements of A Company, 1st Support battalion, 1st Marine Division to determine where he was in Korea. His military occupation specialty was 0300- infantry. His service number was 1280596 if you intend on ordering his records.

April 1952- 2nd Recruit Training battalion, Marine Recruit Depot at Parris Island, South Carolina

July 1952- Headquarters Section, Headquarters and Supply Company, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina

Oct 1952- D Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines, 2nd Marine Division at Camp Lejeune

Jan 1953- D Company, 2nd Battalion, 6th Marines at Camp Lejeune

Apr 1953- Headquarters Company, 1st Marine Division in Korea

July 1953- A Company, 1st Support Battalion, 1st Marine Division in Korea

Oct 1953- A Company, 1st Shore Party Battalion, 1st Marine Division in Korea

Jan 1954- Casual Company, Headquarters Battalion, Quantico

Jan 1955- enlisted in the USMC volunteer Reserve in Boston

Hi,
I'm looking for information on my cousin, Private First Class Richard H. Christel, U.S. Marine Corps. According to an obituary I found, he served in the Marines from 1952 to 1954 and served in the Korean War.

Unfortunately, I can't afford to subscribe and download the Muster Roll entries for him, so I was wondering if anyone would be able to look him up for me. I'm curious to know when he served in Korea, and which unit(s) he served with.

I thank you in advance for your help.

Ms. Hause,

I cannot help with your question, but I too am looking for information on my father. He was in the Army from 1953-Aug 29, 1957. He enlisted in Kentucky and (I assume) was sent to Germany. WHen I was young he mentioned Frankfurt, the Black Forest, London, and going over by ship.

It appears his service record was destroyed in the 1973 Archives fire.

My father's name was Alex Kinningham and he was from Bell County Kentucky.

I would be most grateful for any help you can offer.

Best regards,
Are you absolutely sure he was U.S. Army (Army Air Corp/AF)? Those were the only branch of service records 80% burned. Navy, Marine and Coast Guard were not stored there in 1973. Belle Isle MI has a Coast Guard Station as does Detroit. Something else is you should contact the MI National Guard if he didn't go overseas then maybe his unit was not Federalized. Records could still be in MI only.

Have you filed a Form 180 request anyway with the NARA? If he wasn't Army then they should find his records. A phone call and one is told about the fire...file the paper work and they have to search and just may find something to help you.

Thank You so much!

Its so strange I am unable to find any info on him. ANYWHERE I know he was Stationed in Detroit...and married someone in Detroit than divorced her than married my husbands mother. He was stationed on Belle Isle? He is still in MI but I was hoping to find SOMEONE that knew him. This is so confusing. Without his DD-214 we have NOTHING considering his files were destroyed in the Missouri fire in 1973

We have hit a brick wall and he needs extra care.

Thank you for your info

All discharged Veterans were encouraged to filed copies of DD214 with the County Recorders Office in the County they returned to live in after the war. Some states/Counties have them filed with the Family Court. Check all the County Offices/Courts in all the places he lived since the war. Some states offered Veterans Benefits separate from Federal so check with State Veterans Affairs Office either at the state level or counties he lived in. If he went to college after his discharge see if transcripts or records have any educational G.I.Benefits used. Look back on Property records as some states like California had home loans available. His service number maybe on any of these records.
Fold 3 and Ancestry have Military records online outside chance may find something there. Your local library may have one of them to use for free or a LDS Family History Center.
Also do a newspaper search of his home town before he was drafted there maybe an announcement of his entering the service or when he completed basic training. Good Luck.
Lastly talk to family...your mothers too...they may have memories of "Army stories" told at family gatherings early in his marriage or letters written between parents and siblings and himself while serving.
Good Luck

Edit: Also look for the spelling Keen as that is what the spelling is in the 1940 census. Also I find no Military databases on Ancestry referencing him.

But I had a feeling that there was a large storage area at the base that was filled with old photos, and maybe they just don't want to go through them...I did have some luck in obtaining a few photos by contacting someone who served in the same unit. Have you tried doing that? See if they have a facebook account, or if you can find them on ancestry.com. The region required a vast array of requirements for operation intelligence.

Growing Japanese socilism, the threat of mainland China vs all the off-shore Nationalist Chinese territories.

The ever-present Soviet threat was a key operational element during the post WWII - Cold War time period.
Thanks Ted,

Your post was definitely helpful. I believe my grandfather was overseas from 1952 to about 1954, but I'm not 100% sure about when he returned home at the moment. Any idea if any sort of "undercover" work would be involved in this group's "data collection" services?

Thanks again -- Stephanie F
That would put him on Pork Chop Hill during the horrible last two weeks of combat, much of it hand to hand.

I am showing July 9th, 1953.

Those units provided collection and interpretation of a wide range of intelligence data to include signal and human interrogation to extract information for planning.

The 356th was not part of the war effort in a direct capacity. I don't have the dates of unit activity in Japan, that would be helpful.

Hi,

Thank you for the reply! So far my online searches haven't yielded much -- pretty much the links you shared. The first link has been the most helpful, but I still can't find what his group actually did during his time overseas. I'm working on getting his military records, which will hopefully shed some light on the subject. Right now I don't even know his MOS.

I appreciate the help! -- Stephanie
