It looks like the photography studio was on Via Bonazzi in Perugia, Italy. From the uniform style probably around the turn of the century, the Italian army changed thier unifroms around 1908 and this uniform is prior to that. You might want to post the photo on one of the uniform collector sites, someone with a better knowledge of Italian period uniforms might be able to help you better.

Thank you, I've attached the back of the photograph as well. Do you have any idea when this would have been taken? The person we think this is would have Benin the US before 1907.

Thanks!

My grandfather fought in WWI and he had a military pin of the "Order of Vittorio Veneto". He told my father that he fought in the Alps. I have a photograph of him in uniform and it looks like he was in the Cappello Alpino uniform.

Could knowing this open any doors to finding his military records which could then help me find his birth info...?

I don't know where to begin...

Thank you!

It is my understanding that Italian Military records after 1875 are in district offices. I could use help finding the address for the district office for Carini, Palermo, Sicily, Italy? My great grandfather left his family to go back to Italy to fight in WW1. He made it home in 1919 and resumed taking care of his family. I would like to try to find his records.

First Italian War for Independance--Garibaldi

John Adolphus Entz

Introduction:
John Adolphus Entz was supposed to have been born in Milan, Italy December 16, 1828. Have also found given: 1825, 1831.
He died on April 20, 1907. His Michigan death certificate states:
Father’s name is given as: George Entz, born Switzerland.
Mother’s name is given as: Angeline Claymond, born Italy.

His Italian military service:
His military service first came to light with the discovery of his printed newspaper obituary undoubtedly published shortly after his death in 1907. The account given is quite dashing. He served under the famous Italian leader: Giuseppe Garibaldi. The pertinent part will be transcribed here:
“John A. Entz was born in Milan, Italy, December 16, 1828. Here he grew to manhood and served as a soldier in the Italian army, and was with the Italian forced under that most intrepid and daring Italian generalo Garibaldi. Was one who helped to deliver Italy from Papal dominion; was in no less than three important battles, where there was pitted against the little handful of Italian liberals, the united armies of Hungary, Austria and France. They invaded the enemies’ country and fought the battle of SanGull; another in the Alps on the borders of Switzerland, another in Woldoria where they were compelled to retreat back to Rome. Here they held out for four weeks until they were simply overpowered by the enemy. There they beat a retreat to the coast where Garibaldi escaped on a fishing smack. But Mr. Entz, with 250 others were taken prisoners and thrown into a dungeon to await death by hanging. He with four companions were being taken to the gallows when he knocked the guards down and escaped. He came to America and landed in New York in 1850.”

Facts in need of verification:
1. His military service.
2. The following military actions:
a. SanGull
b. “another in the Alps” on the border with Switzerland
c. Woldoria
3. I am especially interested in his capture and escape. (The 250 as
mentioned above.) If this really took place it most likely is to be
found in newspapers and history books.
4. His parents.

Family:
Wife: Sarah Gibson, (September 10, 1843). Born in Ireland. She came to America in 1848. They married November 28, 1858, Hillsdale, Michigan. She died April 19, 1929.
Children:
Mary Entz, (1865-1937). Mrs. William J. Wilson, of Lichfield
Mina Entz, (1866-1936). Mrs. David William Lige, of Liberty
Jenuia Entz, (1868-1946). Mrs. William J. Rountree, of Hanover
George Entz, 1870-1894)
Angeline A. Entz, (1872-1967). Mrs. Henry Woodllliff, of Hanover
Would anyone know how to find out more about this army that existed from about 1710 in various forms until the unification of Italy?

I have an Irish ancestor that served in it, rising to the rank of Captain. His name was Francis Cotter and I have a note that his father Martin also served but I am not convinced about that. Presumably in the first half of the 18th C but how and where can I find more?

Thanks
Isabel

Sorry it was the Fiat A.S.1 trainer

I must have had double vision I could have sworn the picture was of a bi-plane and of course it was a mono-plane.

The 35 could be the aircraft’s number. I’ve believe fighters and bombers usually had the squadron number on the fuselage and I’ve seen some pictures that had another number after it that may well be the individual aircraft number and there is something before the 35 [11 perhaps].

If you can’t find a forum the specifically deals with the Regia Aeronautica can I suggest this one at http://www.stormomagazine.com/index.htm , may be able to help, these modelling people are sticklers for authentic details.

Apologies once again for telling you the wrong aircraft type.

Jeff
The aircraft looks like the Italian Caproni Ca.164 bi-plane that was built just prior to WWII, the Italian Royal Air Force (Regia Aeronautica Italiana) had around 280. Intended for training it was found to be unsuitable in that roll and used for “liason” between bomber units, see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Caproni_Ca.164 for full text.

For some model examples see http://www.superaereo.com/ca100.html

The man in uniform is wearing “dress uniform” of the Italian Royal Air Force and his rank is a sergeant. He’s not wearing any “wings” [pilots or observers] so either wasn’t a pilot/observer or hadn’t completed training.
