naming child after battle
I have a relative whose christian names are Majuba Hill, which is a famous battle. Would anybody have any ideas why a child would be named after a battle, cannot trace any relatives that would have lost their lives in the battle
Thank you

Re: naming child after battle
Quite possibly because of the extraordinary jingoism which existed at this time. Although the word has now fallen out of use, the word "mafficking" was used to describe the incredible celebrations which took place after the relief of Mafeking and continued for some time afterwards to describe any sort of hysterical jubilation. Such attitudes were not unknown much later - there were twins born around Southampton on June 6th, 1944 who glorified in the names Montgomery and Eisenhower. By the time they were adults most people would wonder why!

Baloney, there were no such twin births.

Very polite!! Blame the local daily paper.

Thanks for your input although it appears that this has attracted a little controversy

Not to worry - bad manners say more about the person lacking courtesy than anyone else. Glad it helped a bit - jingoism was more than alive and well at that time and the choosing of names is very prone to fashion - bet there will be quite a few Georges cursing the fact they were born in 1913 in a few years time. Mind you - perhaps it is better than having to tell people you had been named after your farmer father's favourite cart-horse as someone I knew many years ago had to! Best of luck in further searching.

What does pomposity say about them. ? You should be the expert on that topic, and the local newspaper didn't post your unsubstantiated assertion on here, and how polite is it to characterise the patriotic sentiments of the majority of a nation, tens of thousands of whom were willing to risk their lives because of their views, as mere jingoism. ?
