Visiting the Chateau de Vincennes, Paris
Has anyone been to the Chateau de Vincennes?
All I know is that my ancestor Jean Baptiste Maximilien Moulon de la Chesnaye was born in 1760 and was an Ancien Officer d'infanterie au Regiment de Touraine, 1788.
I am planning a visit and am wondering how easy or hard it is to find information on him.
Thanks Karen

Hello
Yes I have, but am planning another trip next year. How did you go? Did you get much information?

Re: Visiting the Chateau de Vincennes, Paris
I have been there 2 or 3 times. I was able to get the files I went to see. It has been a few years but when I went no one spoke English there and I don't speak French so it was a challenge. But, they were very helpful. First you will get a Research Card then you look up your person in index books. You will fill out a request form and go to the research room and wait.
They will call you when they find the file. You can read it and photo copy.
It was a lot of fun and really easy to navigate.

Re: Visiting the Chateau de Vincennes, Paris
Does anyone know if you can send an email to the archives to find out if there is a military record there? I am interested in the time period from about 1810-1820, so the post-Revolution era. I know where the soldier was from and when he was born. I live in NYC and likely won't be getting to Vincennes anytime soon, so wondering if there is another way to access the archives. I can't seem to find anything online. Thanks, Patrick

Re: Visiting the Chateau de Vincennes, Paris
Hi again Karen -- I sent an email, and though the response was fast, I was told "this email only processes "les reservations de place" or seat reservations (not sure what that means) and to write to the "Service History of Defense" Office in Vincennes, so maybe something changed with their policy for providing information. Thanks regardless, Patrick

Perhaps you just contact them through their website. Do you have a number for him - I found mine by googling? What is the name?
