Theodore Fawcett 6th Dragoon Guards

Claims have been made that Theodore Fawcett, an officer of 6th Dragoon Guards, served in the Crimean War. I would like to confirm this. Unfortunately it is not possible for me to obtain his Army service record. He allegedly retired (resigned?) in 1858 but was promoted to Lieutenant and then Captain before coming to Western Australia in the early 1860s. These ranks, however, may apply to his positions in a local force in WA. I have found a registration for a passport application in 1860 (England), and his involvement in the Pinjarrah Mounted Volunteers (WA) in 1862.

He appears in the London Gazette as a Cornet in 1851; thereafter I can find no other promotions, retirement, etc.

I cannot find him on the Crimea medal roll for the 6th Dragoon Guards; looking at the roll, it would seem either to be a small representation of that regiment in the Crimea or the medal roll is incomplete.

You advice would be appreciated.

Diane

Dear Diane:

Fawcett did not serve in the Crimean War. I am working on my 3rd book on the cavalry of the Crimea, dealing with the 10th Hussars, 12th Lancers, 1st Dragoon Guards and 6th Dragoon Guards. The United Service Magazine (1855, Part I,p. 311) notes that "Francis George Savage Curtis, Gent." became a Cornet vice "Fawcett, who retires". It is dated 15 December 1854. I have the muster rolls for the regiment in the Crimea, and do not find his name on them. He is not in Tony Margrave's Officers of the Crimean War 1854, 1855, and 1856, which lists 3 men named Fawcett in the Crimea; His name does not appear on the Medal Roll for the 6th DG in the Crimea. I also checked the indexes for Hart's Annual Army List for 1856, 1857, and 1858 and did not find his name there either. I don't know if Hart's includes Militia members in the indexes, but if not and he had higher ranks than Cornet, it may have been in one of the militias.

If you have more about him you would be willing to share, I would like to include it in my 3rd book (if I ever finish it), with attribution, of course.

Cheers

Hello Larry

Good to hear from you again. I guess you know that your former Journal as well as the CWRS seems to be in peril. I hope the group continues despite of its problems. It seems all organisations are feeling the pinch.

Regarding Fawcett ..... I have now discovered much the same information you have supplied. I first found him missing from the medal roll of the 6th DG .... but as we have discussed previously that roll has its problems - tacked on the end of the 5th - and I still wonder if it is complete. I found his entry as Cornet in the Gazette in 1851, but I failed to find his retirement in that worthy resource. There is a photograph of him in the local Volunteer Rifle Corps without any medals, which I found a bit suspicious. There is plenty written of him here as he founded a prominent 'Colonial' family. I will dig it out and send it to your personal email address including photo.

Congratulations on getting going on yet another book. I may be able to help with other men in the regiments you mentioned if they settled here in Western Australia. I will be in touch.

Best regards,
Diane
