Info on a Crimean War soldier

I am trying to get more information on one of my ancestors, John Cashman (b. abt 1837 Cork, Ireland) who served during the Crimean War. He migrated to NSW Australia before 1868, where he married and died. According to an article in a local newspaper in 1908, he served in the Crimea participating in the battles of Kurtz, Balaclava, and Alma. It does not list what regiment he served in.

Would anyone be able to tell me where to look? Most references need a regiment or unit to start with. Any information would be greatly appreciated!

Stephen

Hi Stephen

I have a book called Hell Riders which lists the roll of the Light Brigade,(Crimean War) his name does not appear in this list.

Does not help much but just thought I would let you know

Sally

Hello Stephen

I had a few candidates, but one by one had to be eliminated to fit your facts. Where did you find the information that he was at Kurtz, Balaclava and Alma? This would fit some of the regiments in the Highland Division. However, the only John Cashman names I can come up with are as follows and can be eliminated .... not very helpful, but may stop a wild goose chase in its tracks.

John Cashman 18th Regiment can be found in the Crimean War medal rolls but was killed in action in June 1855.

John Cashman 41st Regiment was born in Waterford Ireland (not Cork) and although engaged in the Crimean War, was discharged from the Army in 1876 - too late for arrival in NSW 1868.

Other John Cashman names in the second quarter muster of 1861 were in the 66th and 74th - neither regiments were engaged at the Crimean War.

Not very helpful to advise where someone is not! Hope another poster can help.

Hello again Stephen

Sorry, forgot to mention: you can rule out the cavalry regiments of the 'Heavy Brigade'. They are the 1st Dragoons (Royals); 2nd Dragoons (Scots Greys); 4th Dragoon Guards (Royal Irish); 5th Dragoon Guards (Princess Charlotte of Wales) and 6th Dragoons (Inniskilling). This came from Roy Dutton's book "Forgotten Heroes: The Charge of the Heavy Brigade".

You will soon have a very long list of "not in regiment ......" !!!
